Is it worth to immigrate to Canada from India?

I read 100 s of articles/answers on this question, and I am very sorry, I could not find one answer which hits the nail on the head as they say.I also wrote a fair bit on this lingering question. Now due to new age restrictions, being extraordinarily polite and no one tells the truth, and most of the people dance around the issues. Unfortunately whatever you say: It ought to hurt someone, and being a writer is not easy these days.Let me try one more time to cut the chase.Nothing is free in Canada, YOU and ONLY YOU(either you or your next generation will pay for all the things, either now or later).Directly or indirectly you will pay close to 50 cents from every dollar you earn to the Government.Unless you are a bum and have no intentions of working, yes you may have free rides in shelters. No one is gentle/kind heart/and have spread a red carpet for you that is a total myth. When it comes to survival, everybody is for themselves, be it Canada/or any other country. The world, in general, is an incredibly mundane place to live.Good jobs are hard to come. People who are here for a long time are not happy about immigration. And they have coined a new term for all immigrants called: FOB, Fresh off the Boat. It is politically correct and sums up everyone. Just for refresher course following is the vocabulary from the past. For the Brown people it used to Paki, for Asians: Chink, for Italians: WOP, for Mexicans: West Backs, for French: Frogs, for British: Limy, so now it was too hard to remember all these names: One covers them all FOB, and it very politically correct. Please do not stress everyone had a name.Saying good morning, how is the weather is better than calling names and throwing a beer bottle at your wife and you on the street. It has mellowed down since we arrived here in the early 70, or our predecessors suffered. ( It happened to me, in the first 70 s, my wife and I was going to our friend’s house for lunch, one group of kids, pulled the car along the sidewalk, threw a beer bottle on my wife. And sped off. Fortunately, this half-filled bottle, it did not hit her, but new sari which she wore the first time was ruined.Yes, now they do not throw such object, but in private conversations, the story is different. It does not bother us anymore; we have played our innings; it does not matter. It is similar, did cast system go away from India, of course not, sure Government passed a lot of laws. Here also or for that matter around the world, one has to learn to live with it.These kind of problems are almost everywhere to some extent, get used to it.All this polite talk does not translate to a job opportunity, how do I know, close to fifty years here taught me almost every dialect of this land.Canadian society was very close and whites only, racial as much as it could be, Google it the suffering of Chinese and early east Indians and total cruelty to the First Nations. History books are full of these examples, also rest assured everyone regardless of color everyone paid the price to settle in this harsh land. This new Avatar is need of the time, this new hug and kiss, but the endpoint is more or less the same. Unless with sheer will power, outstanding performance and cut above the others, you may get a nod. And as the time progresses, this 2nd class citizenship dilutes with the very bright second generation, and sure they get better opportunities. And slowly, the third generation may fully integrate into the mainstream.Unless, you are Albert Einstein, but speak English/French with an accent, chances are eager to cut, in case there is a Canadian candidate. And let us face it not very many Einsteins leave their countries, they are worshiped there also.I was fortunate to attend one of the best schools of joint Punjab region of India, not very many “ stars” came to foreign lands. They were stars then/they are stars still in India. They did exceptionally well in their motherland.Well, let us face it most of us are not stars, we are trying to maximize our return, and the extreme hard fact is mediocre or below mediocre stay more or less same wherever they go. Of course, exceptions are there, but those are incredibly devoted, hardcore and do and die Karma Yogis/Yoginis.( In Punjab we had a saying: In case you were mediocre in Lahore, chances are you will be average in Peshawar too)Is it worth move to Canada from India: That is your personal decision. However,You do not have to advertise or tell anyone asks yourself the following questions? In case you or your spouse is used servants/gardener/ Kitty party/ and (X) Chef’s new Samosa recipe………Not a good idea (NAGI) means not to leave your country. In case you are looking for a: Cushy life at work. Is your friend is right when he/she tells you about this gravy train? My friend: You may be paying for education, even no one in your family goes to school. You may also be paying for the health care also may be indirect, one daddy came on a visitor visa and got his work done by a fake heart attack, and said goodbye to Canada, rest of the story is very long.Money does not grow on trees in Canada, or anywhere, at least we did not find anywhere. This is the most developed country in the world. Why are they recruiting immigrants? Why do “ educated” drive cabs/serve coffee and pump gas?Why do Canadians move to the USA?Why did the old pool of Europeans immigrants supply has become dry?Why did the doors to Asian immigrants become a bit more open? Why are taxes very high? Why now, a high percentage of Canadians cannot afford to retire and have a constant fear of survival? Why there are a few jobs with benefits, rest are contracted and mostly without benefits? Why more and more service are withdrawn and now you to have pay extra? Why more and more government services are contracted out?Now you must be burning inside to ask me, why did I move here?Because I had a death wish due to significant heartbreak, and the root cause was “ money,” I vowed I would turn a mountain upside down, to succeed or my body will go back.A word of caution:In my primary school in the Punjab region of India, my teacher told me this proverb:“A mouse found a small root of Turmeric, and he declared himself to a grocer.”I see so many nonqualified answers on Canada, some take a cake, for example, a person never lived a day here: But he/she dispensing advice on Canada. My person just got some paperwork done, maybe he came here once or not for a visit: He/she dispensing huge write up on Canadian living and above all this person announced and dare: Follow me next year I will write my success story.Seek advice from an excellent source.A little knowledge is a dangerous thing and so is too much knowledgeNow you have a tremendous amount of data; you can make your own decision.A footnote: There is hardly any manufacturing jobs are gone; most of the professions and excellent skilled jobs are protected. Now you are an educated guy/girl:Here is the formula:Nagi score assigns a weighted score to each item.Yes score do the same as aboveJuice in you score, do as same above, about your degree/papers, experience and family if you bring one.Fire in your belly score, do as same above. Now: Nagi score = Yes score+juice in you score+fire in your belly score.Be honest to yourself and assign correct scores and see the results. For me, fire in the belly was 100. Therefore, I did not worry about another factor. Our country at the time was impoverished, and for me, there was no hope for moving ahead in life plus I had another significant factor in my life to move here. I vowed either success or death, and I was ready to pay any price, even my life.May help you to make a decision. However, I could write another huge volume, when people from developing countries come here. There is a large set of issues in our lives from back home. In that case, this article will become huge.In case you do get the chance to come here.Welcome to Canada. Our family:Our family, two sons, two grandsons, Daadi ma, Daada, and our daughter(in law)My achievement in life: These two little monkeys, my best friends, and soul mates. I spend some quality times with them, and that the final reward for almost fifty years in this furnace or should we call deep freezer.A tiny footnote:I am known for brutal in honesty and telling the truth, and I know it hurts, that is why it could be both my success or failure factors. However, I did not sell snake oil and worried too much for views and upvotes if you do I appreciate it and thank you. BTW, these articles are in fact for my grandkids I intend to form as chapters in my book for them a gift of my life story so that they do not make same mistakes and suffer as my wife and I did.You want to see the real truth; all my friends did reasonably well back home because India exploded with growth for some time and I do wonder, was it worth it to pay a considerable price. Two of my childhood friends in India became one of the wealthiest two guys in a huge city, and when they walk into a posh clubs, most of the people stand up to greet them. Sure their parents were mega rich, and they inherited a lot, but they multiplied as if there is no tomorrow.Regards. Sam.People ask me in Canada, what is the biggest threat to India?I answer them: In modern times Indian trolls who are from small villages, most likely this may be the first generation who have completed high school in the dawn of history and aggravated a lot of general negativity towards India. No one can imagine the damage they have caused to India and also to extraordinarily high-quality and very bright, moderate, extremely knowledgeable, exceptionally articulate Indians. One Indian Quoran wrote to me in the personal note: How bad is the situation and to control this is everyone’s responsibility.FYI: I have gained a tremendous amount of respect for the Chinese and the Pakistani brothers and sisters right portion due to their outstanding communication skills. Some of their remarks/comment/criticism I will cherish even on the deathbed. They are unbelievably intelligent, smart, and they opened my eyes. In my writings, I have not come across yet one Pakistani who was vulgar, profane, out of control and writing utter nonsense unrelated to the discussion.Mr. Modi should control this filth of Indian trolls who are killing India and high-quality Indians. Well, physical garbage can wait, it is piling up, Swash Bharat from trolls.Take my word it will sink India deeper and faster. In private talks and personal communications with other writers, it is questionable behavior on the public forums. Also please try to keep American slang to yourself, these young kids are using this slang where it should not be used. For example, Dude, it is not the right word to address someone very senior to you in age. Even in the USA/Canada do not use these slang words in writing unless the person is your extreme friend. On a different topic:These are some of the most recent came from the Chinese brothers.Siau Liu10m ago · one upvote from Sam AroraThe writer is well versed in world history and also taking a non-Western interpretation of Chinese history and the rise of China. What movies are you looking forward to in 2019?

It's that time again where we look toward the future of films and count down some of the most anticipated films of next year. I am very excited for 2019, not only from a creative perspective, but also from a business perspective. I will be intruiged to see what ends up becoming of theatres, after streaming platforms such as Netflix and the new Disney+ are given rise to.2018 was a year for trial- Love, Simon gave us a film with an LGBT lead, and following that- a whole host of films gave us LGBT characters in a much more prominent light. Black Panther gave us a black superhero. Solo and Aquaman are going to test two of the film industries franchises to their cores- Lucasfilm's Star Wars has a lot riding on 2019, and the DCEU really needs Aquaman to do well. For this list, I'll be compiling a list of films that spark my interest in 2019, and have the most fan interest. Let's proceed.Glass (January)No one would have thought that 2017's Split would be connected to 2000's Unbreakable. Fans were suprised to find however that the two shared a connected universe with one another. 2019's Glass is going to unite, Avengers style, these two worlds. An all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy and Bruce Willis, amongst others are headlining this film which is amazing. Not only that but based on the films trailers, it actually looks entertaining and unique. Its a comic book styled film but not in the typical sense. It deals with non-comic book characters, but supernatural themes. I love how this film seems to be going for the supervillain approach, which is exciting. I cannot wait to see the havok these characters bring and how the two worlds collide. Overall the film looks great. Cannot wait for January. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (February)Although this film seems to be going for a storyline that I wouldn't have originally gone for- with Toothless finding love and discovering he isn't the last Night Fury, there are others, White Fury's, out there, I am still excited for the third entry in this franchise. Dreamworks actually makes some great franchises that compete with Pixar and Disney even- Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and also How to Train Your Dragon. I loved the first two films, and The Hidden World looks beautifully animated, with the franchises tradition of aging the characters continuing to make it a standout in animation. I hope they still show, as originally promised, how dragons became extinct. It will be quite sad, but I feel that it will be a deep, fascinating and rich story, filled with heartbreak, but it would also be a great way to end off what should be a great trilogy. The franchise could go on further and I feel like getting rid of dragons could set up interesting plot points for future films. Either way, I cannot wait for this film. Its also set to feature an openly gay character in Gobber the Belch, which I am excited to see.Dumbo (March)Disney has quite a massive year next year from their Marvel and Lucasfilm properties, to their Pixar projects and to their animated department. Not to mention the debut of their own streaming service, Disney+, but they also have three live-action remakes of classic fairy tale films releasing. Dumbo is the first to release. I am quite excited for this film. Not only do the trailers look excellent. The style of the film has an almost Tim Burton style to them, which I love. But the film also has an excellent cast- Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito- who could ask for a more wonderful cast! I must admit, I have never properly sat down and watched the original Disney Dumbo film from 1941, but the story that this film is presenting appears to be close to what I know of the first film, but also looks to be adding its own spin on the classic tale. I am hoping for a Greatest Showman type feel to this film, in its circus acts and music and its portrayal of what it means to be different and how it isn't always a bad thing.Avengers 4 (May)No 2019 movie list can be completed without the yet untitled Avengers 4 film. Avengers: Infinity War ended on a massive cliffhanger with half of Marvel's most popular heroes including Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Black Panther, all the Guardians of the Galaxy, minus Rocket, amongst others deceased. All that remain are the original six Avengers, War Machine, prior villain, Nebula, Ant-Man and newcomer Captain Marvel. Although Captain Marvel will receive her own film in March 2019, its Avengers 4 that peaks my interest more. How Marvel is going to deal with the fallout of Infinity War remains to be seen and I cannot wait to see it. The mystery surrounding this film is intense also. We do not know anything. The official cast, the plot, the title and the method Marvel will use to promote this film all remain to be seen. This film will wrap up 22 films of the MCU, and also spring the universe forward into its new, and entirely different future. I cannot wait!Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (May)Ryan Reynolds is about to become two of Hollywood's most beloved and recognised characters. He plays Deadpool, and now he is about to play Pikachu! Although I wish he put on a bit of a different voice for Pikachu, I cannot wait to see him as the popular, iconic yellow, fluffy Pokémon. Interestingly I am not sure how good this film will actually be, but I hold out hope that it will spring board a new Cinematic Universe based on the Pokémon franchise. The films first trailers reminded me of Ready Player One, a film I found enjoyable aspects to, but on a whole I did not enjoy, so that makes me nervous. But Reynolds surprised with Deadpool, so maybe he can surprise with Pikachu too. It'll be great for Japan as well, if one of their most iconic characters and franchises got a chance and a great film in Hollywood.A Dog's Journey (May)This may be a little weird of a placement, and I am not entirely sure how legit this film is, but apparently it is coming in May of next year. I loved 2017's A Dog's Purpose, it was the only film I have ever cried from start to finish in- sorry Pixar. I just adored the good-natured story and the message it left you on. The acting was brilliant and heartfelt. Apparently a sequel is coming out titled A God's Journey. It is based on a book, and although I have not read it, I am so excited for this film. Original actors from the first film are returning which is great. I hope this film explores why this dog comes back to life all these times- and does finding his purpose mean he won't come back eventually to live a new life? What other journey's does this dog, Bailey, Bailey, Bailey, have to go through? I am very excited non-the-less. I am not sure if I can handle anymore tears though.Aladdin (May)1992's Aladdin film is one of my top favourite Disney films. I fell in love with the whole entire cast and characters- the street-rat, Aladdin, and his monkey sidekick, Abu. I loved the Princess, Jasmine, and how strong willed she was. The Magic Carpet was so colourful and inventive, and Robin William's Genie was one of the best castings ever! Jafar is one of the coolest Disney Villains to grace the screen, the sets and music numbers were amazing also. The story was memorable and well paced. The trailer for the new film looked pretty good, although I feel a cheapness of Aladdin's casting and clothing, but I hope to be proven wrong. After Robin William's untimely death in 2014, for the live-action film, Genie had to be recast. I honestly feel, had Williams still been alive, Disney would have asked him to reprise the role, similar to how James Earl Jones came back to voice Mufasa for next years The Lion King. However, I feel Will Smith is a great substitute! I feel Genie will be wrapping more than singing though, which I think I am okay with- especially with Smith behind the voice. I hope Disney does justice to this story and create a great live-action remake of one of my all-time favourite Disney films.Rocketman (May)After having seen Freddie Mercury's bio-graphic film, Bohemian Rhapsody, I am so excited to see what Rocketman has to offer for Sir Elton John. This film will chronicle the life of Sir Elton John, and I am so excited to see his rise to prominence and stardom. I hope, just like with Rhapsody, that this film delves into Sir John's sexuality, as he is gay in real life. I feel like LGBT representation is important, and Rocketman is another perfect opportunity to normalise the subject to modern audiences. Either way I just hope to hear great music and a great story from this film. Hopefully it does better critically than Bohemian Rhapsody. Although Rhapsody did a good job audience wise, critically it was quite bashed. Rocketman I hope does well with both and also rakes in cash at the box-office.Toy Story 4 (June)Although Toy Story 3 was what I feel a perfect ending to not only the Toy Story trilogy, but to trilogies in general, Toy Story 4 has certainly sparked my interest. Pixar's only offering next year will return Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang to the big screen, this time in Bonnie's room, no longer Andy Davis'. For this film to work, I hope they do keep it as a mostly stand-alone sequel. Keep Andy out of it. Although the original plot was supposed to be Woody and Buzz setting out to find Bo Beep, Woody's love-interest for the first two films, certain changes have clearly been made after the firing of John Lassater. Apparently the ending of the film is so sad, both Tom Hanks and Tim Allen could not get through it without tearing up! The film looks to be exploring what makes a toy a toy, with the introduction of Spork. I originally suggested the film should explore the rising battle betwen toys and technology, as the line between the two blurs. But this new story looks to be interesting too. I hope Toy Story 4 doesn't butcher the series though! Please Pixar, make us proud- because not many people asked for this! And not because we didn't want it, it's because Toy Story 3 ended so well.Spider-Man: Far From Home (July)Far From Home will be the first MCU film following the conclusion of 22 films in the MCU prior, and will help kick off a new generation of stories and heroes. Although I rather disliked Homecoming, due to its many cringeworthy scenes and characters, its timeline inconsistencies, and its use of Spider-Man and Peter Parker (I have major issues with MCU Peter sadly), I am very excited for this film. I hope Marvel and Sony reign it in a bit and refocus the franchise. Homecoming tried too hard to be different, and to me it didn't feel like Spider-Man. I loved Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man 2 (2004), and not saying I want those films again, but I want a return to form. I love how the film is using Mysterio as its main villain, but also bringing in Michael Keaton's Vulture again. Tom Holland and Zendeya are returning which is exciting, however the addition of Sam Jackson's Nick Fury and Cobie Smulder's Maria Hill get me nervous. I don't think SHIELD or these characters need to move forward into future stories past Avengers 4. Either way I hope Marvel clears this timeline mess up and reign in the story. The Lion King (July)The Lion King is one of my favourite films of all time. I am so excited for this 2019 remake! Jon Favreau, who directed Disney's live-action, The Jungle Book film in 2016, is directing this film. He proved he understood how to animate animals and make them believable in the film, so I hope he can use what he learnt in this film. What I loved about The Jungle Book is that Favreau was able to take all the main elements from the original film and flesh out the story more, giving it extra layers of depth and story. I hope he can do the same with this film. Although the first trailer was nostalgic, in its pretry much scene for scene adaption to live action of scenes from the original film, the trailer lacked colour and lacked facial expreessions on the animals, which was quite disappointing and important! Despite this; the voice cast is amazing- Donald Glover, Beyoncè, Seth Rogan Alfre Woodard and James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa, the music and score sounds impressive, and I feel Disney can only improve from here. This should be a big film, but more importantly it should be a great film! It: Chapter Two (September)One of my favourite films of 2017 was It. I cannot wait for this film. With a mix of A-lister star talent, like James McAvoy- who has quite a big year next- Glass, Dark Phoenix and It: Chapter Two, and Jessica Chastain, and the original younger Losers Club actors returning, I cannot wait to see more creepy adventures in this creepy town with Pennywise the Dancing Clown. I have grown quite into horror films lately, with The Conjuring films and the first It really helping change my perception of them. I just hope this film can keep the excitement going.Joker (October)This will probably go down as one of the most unique portrayals of the Joker ever. Not only will this film be pulling a Venom and not including the antagonists primary hero, Batman, it will be a Joker origin film. Part of the Joker appeal is that the audience doesn't (still) know about his full origins. Joaquin Phoenix looks to be taking the character in his own direction- not just in act, but also looks- costume and make-up. Its nothing like past Jokers- Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger or Jared Leto. Hallowe'en is the perfect time to release this film, it will certainly do a lot to raise its profile. I just hope DC don't screw this up! I know they have Shazam! as their DCEU offering next year, but this film intruiges me more as this will be Warner Bros first DC film not connected to the DCEU since 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. I am intruiged.Star Wars: Episode IX (December)2019 will prove a big year for Star Wars. See Disney's run with this property has been deemed by many longtime fans as the beginning of the end. Although the prequel trilogy was far from beloved, these days they seem to be viewed with a newfound fondness. Although I have liked many of the new Disney released Star Wars films- The Force Awakens, Rogue One and The Last Jedi particuarly holding my liking, Solo really did kill the franchise- even though I didn't find it as bad as many others did. 2019 will feature the end of the sequel trilogy, the opening of two theme park attractions and Star Wars Celebration. If fans can manage to not show up for these events it could mean the firing of Star Wars franchise head, Kathleen Kennedy, and therefore a new direction for the Star Wars brand, which I think fans want. I am personally excited to see how this film handles Luke and Leia, two very divisive characters in The Last Jedi. I hope Kylo Ren has a unique ending- will he be redeemed or something else- I personally hope something else, if he is redeemed the sequel trilogy will basically be a rehash of the original trilogy. Big changes are coming to Star Wars regardless, and I hope this film begins the course correct. Those would have to be my most anticipated films of next year. Although I missed many others- namely Captain Marvel, Shazam!, Frozen 2, Jumanji 3 (apparently that is coming next year), The Jungle Cruise, Dark Phoenix, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Act, Pet Sematary, John Wick 3: Parabellum, Godzilla: King of Monsters, MIB, Annabelle 3 (apparently that is happening next year too), amongst some others, the list above hold my interest the most! Bring it on. Hopefully they deliver!

What are the best books people can read if they want to improve their writing?

There are zero good books about writing. They are scams. Many people will say, "Stephen King's 'On Writing'". Total scam. For one thing, the book is about Stephen King having a truck hit him while he was reading while he was walking in the middle of the road.If you want to be a good writer, don't do that. Don't read and walk in the middle of the road. Some people will say, "Ray Bradbuy's 'Zen and the Art of Writing'". This is a good book but not a book about writing. It's a collection of essays about all the things Ray Bradbury has been interested in in his life.It just so happens he later writes about dinosaurs, or people with tattoos, or whatever. He gets so passionate about a man with tattoos that he writes abut them.Occasionally I hear a ridiculous answer like "Strunk & White's" book. Who? Who are these people. And yes, grammar is important. But that's what editors are for.I love Anne Lamott's book "Bird by Bird". But some people hate it. Some people don't like how she describes writing. So it's not in the top three books about how to write.I can't read a book "How to be a great golfer" and get better at golf. Here's what I have to do:- I have to golf a lot- I have to take lessons from a pro- I have to take video of myself golfing and have the pro go over with me every stroke I did WRONG.- I have to practice those strokes over and over again. As Bruce Lee says, I don't fear the man who practices 10,000 kicks, I fear the man who practices 1 kick 10,000 times.- I have play competitive golf. When you play something competitively you learn the emotional psychology of how to deal with the adrenaline and tension that comes with playing with the grownups. And then with all of the above, I have to repeat.A lot of writers will say you have to write a lot. This is not really as true as people think. It depends what you want to write. If you want to write a piece of literary fiction, you probably need to write a lot.If you want to write 600 pages on butterflies, you have to sit down and write a lot. Only because sitting down that long to do anything is very difficult. If someone wrote a book: "How to sit down for 10,000 hours and not get bored while staring at a luminescent screen" then that would probably be a good book about how to write better. Some people say you have to read a lot. This is partly true. But if I had to research everything, then why not just hand people a reading list of what you researched. Then you don't have to write a book. You can write a paragraph about why you used each book and knit that altogether into a theory. You do have to experience a lot. But don't be fooled. There's two ways to have drama. One is: you can have it in your life. Which is often painful. I don't want to go to a war just so I can write about it.I don't want to be an orphan just so I can write about it.You either have drama in your life or in your writing. It's very hard to have drama in both. You should experience something: passion for what you want to write about. If you have a lot of experience being President of the United States then you can probably transcribe that and make a book.Or if you think that eventually we will colonize Mars and then have a war with the robots we left behind on Earth then you can probably write a novel. But stick to what happens. ("Then the explosions came...") Don't focus on being flowery with you writing.I do think reading helps you use virtual mentors to teach you how to do some writing. But it depends on what kind of writing you want to do.If you want to write mystery novels, read a lot of popular mystery novels. That will make you a better mystery novel writer.BUT ONLY if you follow one trick: once you have figured out "the rules" on the popular mystery novels, be strong enough to change them a bit. Now you will turn into a good writer (with 10,000 hours practice and 10 books written).I've written 17 books. 10 of them were awful. I will tell you right now I wish I can buy them back from the publishers and burn them. I will be a book burner of my own books. But some are ok.My reading list should be different from everyone else. But these are the books I've read that have made me a better writer.I bet some of them will work for you. I also encourage you to add to this list in the comments. I'm always on the hunt for more:1) A collection of short stories: Jesus' Son, by Denis Johnson (his literary style combined with his poetry background creates unimaginable beauty on the page)2) Mastery, by Robert Greene (non-fiction. He's just so smart)3) Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut (the way he anchors the story into the most intense moment in his life and then gives himself permission to go off on any tangent he wants after that).4) Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway (it's almost a cliche to say this book. But this is the best example of: if you remove or add one word from this book it will make the book worse).5) The Road by Cormac Macarthy (same as above, only in a dystopian science fiction world).6) Interview with a Vampire. (I haven't read this book in over 20 years. But I still remember how she had small chapters and ended every small chapter with a cliffhanger. So I always had to turn the page. If all you do is remember: how can I make the reader read the next sentence, you win). I don't even like books about vampires but if I am being honest about what influences me, this one is it.7) Factotum by Bukowski. Again, the beauty of the small chapter on an otherwise totally boring topic. Also, he was a poet first and I think people who read this book often miss the self-awareness that comes cloaked inside his ego.8) Ant Farm. Simon Rich is funny. Funny is good.9) A Million Little Pieces. Call him a fraud. Call him whatever. But I like the way James Frey breaks the rules in this book. It's a book about breaking the rules in writing.10) Steps by Jerzy Kosinski. Short chapters. Each one gets intense quickly. It's a novel and none of the chapters are really connected. It's basically a book by an insane man who later killed himself. And that's writing. Also good by him: Cockpit.11) Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl (but only part 1 - not the theory part). His entire "meaning" that helped him survive the concentration camps was writing this book. And you feel it.12) How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World by Harry Browne. I don't always agree with him (and I hate when people say that) but the philosophy has largely become a part of my writing. I guess same with "The Untethered Soul" by Michael Singer.13) Born Standing Up by Steve Martin. I love standup comedy and to see this part of his autobiography basically taught me the art of autobiography and excellence.14) No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July. She is a love addict. I feel I am one also. Reading this collection of stories taught me how to write about it.15) Person by Sam Pink and Spectacle by Susan Steinberg. Their entire personalities are reflected in their literally styles. I love when this happens. You can argue Thomas Pynchon and James Joyce do that also but I guess I might not like their personalities as much.16) Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed. She invents the genre of literary compassion. I reread from this book before every Q&A I do.This is just a few. I just realized I can probably write 100 down. But these are particular to me.I'm going to keep writing my 100 (in fact, I have a book club where I do exactly that). But you should try writing your 100.Figure out your influences and you begin to figure out your writing.Read your influences and you begin to figure your writing for TODAY.Then clean the table around your computer. Have a glass of water. Shut down the Internet.Write.
