I was an industrial maintenance electrician/electronic technician. I grew up in a suburb of Cleveland, a very industrial town, and later moved to Houston, also has a lot of industrial manufacturing. My ex wife was from Spokane WA, mostly a service town with very little industry. We left Houston because she wanted “to move back by my parents.” I had been there for several years and worked for a couple of companies that had gone out of business and was in need of a job when this interview happened.This company manufactured custom equipment for remote industry. That kind of stuff.I went in to their office to apply for the job of Maintenace electrician which was advertised in the newspaper. The woman at the front desk took me into the dining facility to fill out my application.While I was filling out the paperwork two men walked in and sat at a table in front of me. As I was writing I was also listening. It was a job interview. For the job I wanted. The man facing me was the maintenance supervisor and the man with his back toward me was the applicant. There were several questions asked and answered. At one point the supervisor told the other fellow a list of the qualifications they were looking for.As soon as he finished speaking I looked up, made eye contact and enthusiastically pointed to myself and immediately looked back down and went back to writing. Within two minutes the other fellow was escorted out. The supervisor came back in and said, “You have something for me?” I handed him my resume. He read it, we spoke a little, he toured me around the facility and immediately hired me.

Have your facilities supervisor/manager create a disaster preparedness plan and include the service and maintenance of the generator in that plan. Budget money for the generator to be maintained (either in-house or by an electrical repair firm that specializes in generators) as well for having its fuel tested and replaced periodically. After each service, run the generator briefly for an extended period and note if there any leaks or if any issues arise.Before all of this though, buy the best generator that your facility can afford.
