What do Finns think about Serbs?
That is a bit complicated. It depends on the age of the answerer.. you see, older Finns (born no later than the 1970’s) mostly remember Serbia either as a part of Yugoslavia, and some went to YUG in the time before the 1990’s crisis. Some might have worked there. These older people who knew the country before Milosevic are not as affected by BBC World and media talk of genocide etc. Some even experience Yugonostalgia. But most Finns aged 20–40y or so probably mostly remember the news and overwhelmingly negative things. Also those older ones who had no personal experience probably mostly picked up on the problems and not much else. One thing most commonly asked of me by Finns and westerners who have not traveled the Balkans is:“Are there still lots of bombs/mines/destroyed buildings etc. in Serbia?”People just don't know. And hey, after all, it was our fine president Ahtisaari who made peace there when nobody else could. He got the Nobel! (*note the sarcasm)That's how the cookie crumbles..I remember when I was in senior high school (gymnasium, 11th to final year, 1990–1992).. we had a young history teacher who was quite astonished and even angry because of the Western powers trampling on Serbian sovereignty.. but back then, I was not very interested. It was just another war in a dreary corner of Europe. Yeah, corner.. I know it seems funny to Serbs, a Finn thinking Serbia is a remote corner in Europe. But so it often goes - when you have no ties to a place, no interest and so on. Just another shitty slobo (=communist, poor etc.) country, would be maybe even the general opinion. Lots of Finns know very little of Serbia, also because there's no sunny beaches there (well, no sea). Many also are ignorant of the fact that YUG was not behind the Iron Curtain. So basically and unfortunately the general opinion Finns have of Serbia and Serbs is not high. But I try to do my part and re-educate & correct people when needed. The West-East division of Europe should be at an end slowly.. but the ripples of old prejudices take a long time to stop. NATO hawks and people who fear Russia will attack us are almost always anti-Serbian, too. I think most agree that Serbs are decently hard workers and soldiers when need be. The biggest thing we share is inat (serbian) ~ sisu (finnish) - both meaning gutsiness of sorts. People always respect that.Interestingly, Swedes also too often know staggeringly little of even Finland - a big part of Sweden for 600+ years, let alone Russia and eastern European countries.. one can see this e.g. on Swedish tv quizzes, when they have questions on those.People are just ignorant. And self-centered. And culture-centered. Etc.NB I have never been asked by Serbs, whether polar bears walk the streets of Helsinki in the winter.. - but a few times by Germans and other westerners :-D
D&D: How can the offspring of powerful mages be weaker than their parents?
For the same reason the children of parents with high IQs often fall into the average IQ range. Genetics is quirky, and recessive and dominant genes dont always translate in the children the same as the did in the parents. My mother claimed to be bad at math. My father claimed to be good. I ended up being good at advanced math but sucking at long division. Dad had an artistic streak. One half brother picked it up, I picked it up, but the other didn't. None of us had the closest or best relationship with him.Magic users in D&D fall into a few categories. Wizards are book trained. So if a wizard’s child hates reading in the arcane library, they aren't going to be as impressive. Sorcerers have an inate ability, and knowledge doesn't help them so much, they are like the Xmen, its just there and they are born with it. Other magic users are divine, based on pacts, and or natural affinity which have no relation to your parents’ abilities.
