What are the freakiest, most unusual scientific discoveries of all time?

Parasites that modify their host's behavior to suit the needs of the parasite, even sending the hosts on suicide missions. For example rabies causes the host to bite other animals, even larger and more dangerous ones, because it is transmitted via saliva. There's a fluke that causes ants to climb blades of grass, so they will be eaten by herbivores, in whose guts the flukes reproduce. Rats get reprogrammed to run through open spaces where predators will eat them, and so on.Flukes and ants:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dicrocoelium_dendriticum#Life_cycleFungus and ants:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordyceps_unilateralishttp://science.psu.edu/news-and-events/2011-news/Hughes5-2011Rats and cats:http://arstechnica.com/science/2007/04/how-a-parasite-can-help-a-cat-catch-its-mouse/Flies and bees:http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/notrocketscience/2012/01/03/parasitic-fly-spotted-in-honeybees-causes-workers-to-abandon-colonies/Viruses and caterpillars:http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/notrocketscience/2011/09/08/liquefying-virus-uses-one-gene-to-make-caterpillars-climb-to-their-doom/The really freaky part? What is "anti homeless" architecture?

Great question! Many cities and even in the suburbs are designing open spaces and parks that, through specific designs, discourage homeless people from trying to live in an area of this planned space. Designs range in scale and type and are generally employed to prevent skateboarding, sleeping, littering, loitering, and public urination, among other 'anti-social' behavior. The type of architecture has a strategy that uses the built environment to discourage the homeless from using public spaces for activities that they were not intended to be used for.For example, benches used for sitting are designed to be slanted at just the right angle so that someone who is trying to stretch out and sleep, would roll off the bench, due to the sharp slope of the bench seat.Places that would attract skateboarders would be designed with iron partitions or even spikes so that the flat surface, usually a sloping wall, can't be used by skateboarders.Windows and walls have been spiked in cities for some time now, usually to deter birds from roosting on them. However, many windowsills at ground level are being spiked now too, this time to deter people from sitting or sheltering under the awnings of windows. Some cities in the cold north east cover subway street vent grates with iron zig-zag designs which prevent people from trying to lay down on them for the heat they give off. Here are some pictures of this "Anti Homeless" architecture :

Are eagles and hawks intelligent? I know that owls are not that wise and vultures/harris hawk are very smart, but how about other birds of prey?

On the bird intelligence scale, I’d put various falcons and hawks at about a (4–5) out of 10. And Harris’s Hawks a solid (5). Not brainiacs, but not total morons either. Their Report Card says C+They are smarter than wise owls (2). Smarter than grouse and mourning doves (3). Less intelligent than eagles (5–6), osprey (6), and most migratory songbirds (6–7). Not nearly as smart as vultures (8). Or corvids and parrots (9–10).Identifying “intelligence” of any animal is highly subjective. Birds are no different. You can use various factors like brain size, trainability, mimicking ability, behavior (like tool use!), problem solving, social behavior & cooperation, navigation, etc. Then there is the whole “self-awareness” thing, which is a complex and sometimes controversial subject all on its own. There are some obvious stars like some vultures, corvids and parrots… but the rest… the data is mostly sketchy. What I’ve written above is reasonably accurate. The biggest surprise for most people continues to be the owl, because of the folk image of them being “wise”. But consider this… an owl’s brain is smaller than its eyeball! There’s a rhyme for the bird we call pelicanWhose beak holds more than his belly canBut have you heard that the owl we call wiseHas a brain much smaller than his eyes?Keep in mind that there are also individuals within any species that may be brighter or duller than their peers, just like human folk! These are all relative generalizations.
