I’m an American living abroad now.One reason many Americans might not live overseas is that many countries’ immigration systems make it extremely difficult to do so. My company had to prove that I was a specialist and doing a job that couldn’t be filled by a European in order to secure my work permit sponsorship. And I have to renew that work permit annually. I had a similar experience when I was younger and trying to find work in the U.K. after I graduated with my master’s: Most companies wouldn’t look at you unless you already had permission to work, but in order to get permission to work in most cases (at least where I was looking, in my field), you had to have a pre-existing employment sponsorship. In other words, I found myself in the Catch-22 of needing a permit to get a job and needing a job to get a permit. It took over four years of professional experience before I qualified such that my company could sponsor my transfer overseas.At the risk of being blunt, do you think that any random-ass American could decide she wanted to live overseas and do it proactively without having to worry about being allowed to work, open and manage a bank account, and stay indefinitely? I can tell you straight up that in most countries where the average American would want to live and/or work, it’s not that simple (and that’s to say nothing of other less bureaucratic issues like language barriers).In order to get my work and residency permit — again, which I received only because I’m specialized enough that my job would be extremely difficult to fill from the European talent pool — I had to do an FBI background check (including fingerprinting), have my birth certificate certified by my home state, do two different health checks (one in the U.S. and one in Belgium), undergo a police check at my apartment, make multiple visits to the municipal commune to submit paperwork, and pay an additional fee to expedite my residency card so I could legally leave and re-enter Belgium after being here for 90 days. This is on top of the other red tape (tax forms at the bank, foreign leasing laws, navigating health insurance). Some of my colleagues have it worse (a married couple I know had to have their marriage license translated into French, at their expense, and submitted to secure the spouse’s residency permit).In the grand scheme of things, there’s nothing out of the ordinary about any of that. But the average American, when faced with that mountain of paperwork (on top of the specialization/sponsorship hassle, of course) vs. the familiarity, comfort and plenty of the U.S. of A., will usually say, “Fuck it” and opt to stay home.(I left home, by the way, to be closer to my British boyfriend.)
