PDF Editor FAQ

What did you do in high school to piss off your teachers but wasn't "against the rules"?

When I was in twelfth grade, I had some extra room in my schedule so I decided I was going to take a second foreign language.I ended up in a ninth grade spanish class.I repeat: I, a senior, was in a spanish class full of freshmen.I was actually kind of surprised by how differently ninth grade classes run from twelfth grade classes. Things were a lot more strict since they were going to be taking a state exam in tenth grade. Homework was actually checked daily. The teacher made us put our phones in our backpacks and our backpacks in the back of the room for every quiz. One thing that stuck out was that we had to get our tests/quizzes signed by a parent after we got the grade back. A lot of teachers do this in elementary/middle school, or if the student gets a low grade. But this teacher did it for every test and every quiz.HOWEVER once you turn 18 in my school (and probably others too), you can sign your own stuff. This is usually for things like field trip permission slips.Once I turned 18, I was exempt from getting my quizzes signed, because I could sign it myself. I had an early birthday (December) so this meant I was able to flex for more than half of the school year. The teacher really didn’t like this though. I’m not entirely sure why. I remember the first time I did it, she was like, “try not to do this.” And I continued to do it for every quiz after.

Is an elementary school teacher allowed to take her student to places and even on a mini vacation?

I do take my students once or twice a year on field trips. In order to participate, parents must sign a permission slip that I keep during the field trip. Field trips are considered academic time and learning opportunities and the whole class is expected to participate. If a child does not have a signed permission slip, he or she cannot join the field trip and will be placed in another teacher’s classroom for the day.A teacher should NEVER take individual children anywhere anytime, unless the teacher in question is a family friend and is acting as such, and not in their official capaticity as a teachers, in which case the “trip” would have to be during non school hours.I have a friend who teaches high school and they have summer trips overseas. This is organized by the school, and my friend usually goes as a chaperone, but in this case she’s still working as a teacher and parents of course have given permission (and paid quite a bit of money) for the experience.

When did you first realize you were pro-choice or pro-life?

I was in Catholic elementary school and I got a field trip permission slip to go stand on the side of the road in front of an abortion clinic. I was six years old the first time I got one, and my mom explained why she always said no when I was eight. I've been pro-choice since I was eight because I understood that people have different circumstances and that they make choices based on that.
