PDF Editor FAQ
What do teachers do that most students don't think about?
The majority of a teacher’s work is done outside of the classroom—and a lot of that is uncompensated but necessary for the success of students: the preparation and grading, endless tweaking of lessons/activities/assignments in response to student needs, keeping up with their discipline and the various changes created by legislatures, following up on concerns about students, calls to/from parents, referrals for services and/or disciplinary issues, etc., sitting in and contributing to meetings of all types, reviewing and evaluating textbooks, coordinating programs, spending their own money for supplies that should be provided by the school/district, and much more. Students typically think teachers show up at 7:00 and leave at 3:00 unless they are a coach or are involved in some other after-school activity. A teacher’s work is not limited to the classroom—the classroom is the culmination of all that other stuff.Teaching is akin to rowing forever upstream (but we like rowing, just not forever, and not always upstream), and no matter how much progress one makes, plenty of non-experts are always standing by to criticize what they don’t really understand.Be kinder to the teachers in your life, no matter what level of instruction. We all work harder than students (and most parents) know to help them get the best start in life.
What do Indian students hate the most?
1. Education system (obviously): Do I have to elaborate this?Hell yes!I got to get out the frustration of my two years(11th & 12th) sucking life in school! (Not really going to do that!)Why?Because…From class 1 to 10 I was just goofing around with my studies as I had all the important questions marked in my books and I knew that they would never ask me to use my brain in exams! (My school reference only!)But when I took PCM in 11th, joined a coaching institute for IIT-JEE preparation, I realised that “Duniya school se bohot badi hai boss!”2.Reservation system: It has its own pros and cons! (too lazy to elaborate any of it!)3. Bookish Knowledge>>>Practical Knowledge: Hey, guess what I knew how to calculate the damn Simple Interest but I didn't knew where it is used!I know how to add-up big digits but still have to use calculator, while dealing with the local vendors! (Their calculation is much faster than mine)4.Projects and assignments (for parents): A kid(1st standard) and his parents came to me for his project based on “Save earth” and we made something like this….I explained him everything related to project, but the next day when his teacher asked him to say few lines about his project he said:”……..”Absolutely nothing! Because he didn't even knew the meaning of the topic!5.Projects and assignment (for students): Nobody took them seriously ever! All we did was copy-paste from internet or from a hard-working friend! Because if one asked me to do research on any topic during my 10th standard, then hello! I had no clue how to start any of it!5.Engineering or Medical (for students who score grade points above 7–8): Hello Indians other fields do exist!Back in school (during 12th) the “science” students were not allowed to take part in activities like sports! We could see the commerce students of our school roaming around freely and we just studied like idiots! Oh, don't remind me of those “good old days”!
How is life at IIT Delhi? Is it tougher than the preparation days or easier?
I have a different answer to what the common answer is. If you ask the majority of people they say life is easier at IIT Delhi which is to true for some but I don’t think so.I feel life is tougher than JEE days and school days as well(obviously). Here is why-The grading system followed here is relative grading, where you get a grade depending upon the performance of your class, if you get the average marks you get a 7, above average means an 8 and so on. I am in the CSE department and almost everyone here was a JEE topper. Imagine a class full of JEE toppers and almost half the class gets a 7 or less. Most companies have a CGPA cutoff of 8.5 (some have a cutoff of 8 and some 9). Thus after 4 years almost half of the students will not be able to sit for the best companies. This creates a very competitive environment(sometimes toxic). We have classes till about 4–5 every day except Wednesday, this does not leave a lot of time to do extracurricular activities, assignments, lab reports, internship applications/prep, etc. Thus I find myself working most of the time.Since there is nobody to help you. You have to do all your chores yourself, manage everything, keep away from distractions. Since you are helped a lot by your parents at home (at least I was) there were fewer things to worry about. Most people binge work and binge-watch i.e. they work hard with little or no sleep for a few days(or weeks) during assignment deadlines and exams and party hard the rest of the time i.e. go out, watch Netflix, etc. This leaves a very imbalanced schedule and it is difficult to keep a good schedule for work and for sleep. I had a very disciplined life during JEE and that helped me a lot.For those who don’t want to go into core jobs and want to go into consulting/management, their studies don’t matter that much however, positions of responsibilities do. Thus you have to get involved in politics which is a very toxic environment. Many people find themselves spending loads of money on alcohol and cigarettes for others.Specifically for the CSE department- we have a lot of assignments and workload, more than any other branch. I have 3–4 assignments a week. Each assignment takes 1–2 days. Thus after classes, I spend almost all of my time in the library. We are not selected for positions of responsibilities, extracurricular activities by the clubs/societies as they know we won’t be able to give a lot of time to the specific activity.I love my life here, but it is intense. But I guess that’s what you sign up for.
