PDF Editor FAQ

What isotope of iodine is used in a nuclear stress test?

Greetings Kevin,I will refer to Barry’s answer below as it is, as I understand the answer to your question. There are other radioisotopes, however, and, there is nothing to say that they were not used during times of experimentation? I don’t know? From Wikipedia - section on the various I-123, I-124, I-125 and today, I-131 IS used to DESTROY the thyroid glands of a good many people!Respect Barry.I just don’t KNOW the answer to this question, but I did give it my best to find out.WIKIPEDIA :Radioiodines I-123, I-124, I-125, and I-131 in medicine and biology[edit]Of the many isotopes of iodine, only two are typically used in a medical setting: iodine-123 and iodine-131. Since131I has both a beta and gamma decay mode, it can be used for radiotherapy or for imaging.123I, which has no beta activity, is more suited for routine nuclear medicine imaging of the thyroid and other medical processes and less damaging internally to the patient. There are some situations in which iodine-124 and iodine-125are used in medicine, also.[3]Due to preferential uptake of iodine by the thyroid, radioiodine is extensively used in imaging of and, in the case of I-131, destroying dysfunctional thyroid tissues. Other types of tissue selectively take up certain iodine-131-containing tissue-targeting and killing radiopharmaceutical agents (such as MIBG). Iodine-125 is the only other iodine radioisotope used in radiation therapy, but only as an implanted capsule in brachytherapy, where the isotope never has a chance to be released for chemical interaction with the body's tissues. In kindness~

What are the types of nuclear medicine scans for cancer?

The one type of nuclear medicine scan that was originally specifically designed to look for malignancy is PET scan. Positron Emission Tomography with F-18 Fluorodeoxyglucose can detect many types of cancer, since tumor cells are usually hypermetabolic, using much more glucose “fuel" than normal cells. This means that collections of tumor cells show up more brightly on the scan. Slower-growing, less aggressive tumors like thyroid cancer may not show on PET because they aren't having to fuel rapid growth. So I-131 sodium iodide is used both to treat and to image thyroid cancer patients after treatment to look for tumors outside the thyroid. Bone scans can detect primary bone tumors or metastases. MIBG can be used for imaging neuroendocrine tumors, but we have moved from lebeling it with I-131 to I-123 for reduction of radiation burden and for improved image quality. In-111 Octreotide and Gallium-67 Citrate have been used for carcinoids and lymphoma and infections (and still are in places where PET is not available), but have largely been supplanted by new PET tracers like Ga-68 and the old faithful FDG. Improved images and/or shorter imaging times and/or less radiation burden are always preferable. Many scans, like bone scans, can be used for many other conditions besides cancer and sometimes one will incidentally find a previously-undetected tumor during a scan that wasn't designed to look for that. I hope that helps. Most nuclear med scans have multiple indications, just by dint of their physiological basis.
