This may be relatively tame based on the stories told by others…I had a landlord that had inherited a large house from her grandmother. It was really more house that she could afford to run so she was making ends meet by running it like a boarding house. She lived in the master bedroom and rented out 4 of the other bedrooms to “roommates”. Each bedroom had a lock so your belongings would be secure. Roommates had no say in who rented and lived there. She was the queen of the house.The rental agreement stated that the security deposit (one month’s rent) could be non-refundable if the tenant stayed less than six months. I did not enjoy living there and decided to move out. I gave my required 30 day notice in writing at the 5 month mark. She accepted my notice without comment and was entirely friendly to me during my final 30 days. I left the room in mint condition and received a heart felt “thank you” from her for leaving the space so clean. I asked for my deposit back. She said “no, you stayed less than six months, you will have to forfeit your security deposit. I pointed out to her that I had met every stipulated condition in the rental agreement. She argued that the language stated I needed to stay “more than six months” and that I was one day short. I asked if she was aware of that from the moment I turned in my 30 day notice and she said “Yes, I assumed that’s what you wanted”. What an awesome human being she was …. NOT. I’m counting on Karma to catch up with her so she can learn how be a kinder member of society.
