It’s an award you earn by satisfying certain criteria.Aside from being meaningful because of your immersion in the scouting program (its most important benefit), the Eagle award is also a recognizable and meaningful accomplishment outside of scouting. I thought that this variant of the question would have never gotten asked.Well. I wasn't the valedictorian. I didn't have a 1600. I didn't get a 4.0. I wasn't getting recruited for a sport.Aha! I am an Asian Male from an affluent prep background! Nope, that can't be it.Let's look at How can I get into a top university?Play to the admissions committee.Read the package! Actually have good non-cookie cutter responses to these questions and make sure that you're not slacking.I think that it's very important to outline why you want to go to Yale. I applied to Yale early and declared as a biomedical engineer. I did my research about both programs and had this very elaborate argument that the residential college system would greatly cater to my need as an engineer to interact with non-engineers.Excel amongst your peers.The usual assumption is that you should be on the top of the bell curve in your class. I think that's the wrong way to look at this. You should demonstrate that you're one of the most gifted people in your area of expertise in the world. I will focus on two things that I thought made me stood out.I was the strongest STEM person in my school. That's probably not enough. In addition to the usual math awards, I also won my regional award, lead my school to a State title, and participated on the State ARML team. I also attended Canada/USA Mathcamp where I got to interact with my peers showing that I could be considered amongst them.Although I wasn't a recruited athlete, I excelled at the activities that I choose to compete in. I was a 3 time All New England wrestler, had a state title and nearly 100 wins. I also made wrestling an important theme of my personal statement highlighting how participating in the sport helped hone the mental and physical discipline that made me a better student and member of the community.It's also important to show that despite those core strengths, I was also still fairly well rounded by doing well in my other classes.Take AP and Honors courses for a high weighted GPA.I took 11 APs and got 5s on all of them except for English. I also took the entire Calc BC, Bio, Chem, Physics combo + some college classes to further boost the reputation that I was a strong science guy. The additional humanities APs helped present a well rounded academic background.Do well on the SAT and score above 700 on each portionThe math SATs are actually pretty easy. It's the subject SATs that helped. I didn't break 700 on the English but it was good enough not to be a red flag.Be active and contribute to the community.I didn't get elected to lead any of the clubs that I was working with asides the Math Team. So I created them.I created two clubs. One was the Model UN club. Apparently this is still floating around at my school so go me. The other was a JETS TEAMS (Junior Engineering Technical Society Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science). Actually that one didn't last very long. But it was a useful exercise and I learned a lot about starting up clubs.I also had a pretty important leadership role with my wrestling team and the Diversity in Action club. Some other things too that I simply can't remember.I'm also an Eagle scout. I was a volunteer librarian for 5 years and by the end, I was a part time employee. My Eagle scout project was to rebuild the library garden. Excel at everything no matter how seemingly trivial.Have a personalityHave a good philosophical reason to do anything. I would like to say that I had a personality as a teenager and most of my answers weren't "because my mom told me" or "because I need to get into college". I had my favorite things and I knew what those reasons were. I knew why I wanted to be good at certain things. I knew why I wanted to go to Yale.As a Yale interviewer now, I basically look for all of the above:Did the candidate do their research about why they are applying to Yale and not the regular of the mill elite college.What are they good at? Are they actually the best at it. Do they have the self competitive urge to be excellent at whatever activity they are active at.Do they seek new challenges? Do they avoid hard classes and adversity or do they lead their peers into the face of problems?Do they have hobbies? Are they good at them? Do their beat on, boats against the current?Are they self-aware enough to meaningfully talk about any of the above items?People like to say that these checklists are unimportant. The checklists are unimportant but the personality questions that they highlight are. Highly intelligent competitive self-motivating self-aware kids have a strange tendency to become highly intelligent competitive self-motivating self-aware adults. Past performance does predict future behavior and if people excel at completely random things now, in an environment where they are surrounded by other high achieving students, they should be able to find new random things to be good at.
