You asked whether you could have a “successful and great” career, not whether you could work in biglaw. You don’t have to work in biglaw in order to have a successful and great career. Most BLS grads work in smaller law firms or for the government. Lawyers who work in smaller firms can still have successful and great careers.Local Reputation vs. National Reputation.One fact you should be aware of is that BLS doesn’t have much of a national reputation. That’s probably one of the reasons why BLS grads tend to remain close to home. (Something like 98–99% of BLS grads work in either New York or New Jersey.)I don’t have an inside line on the reason why BLS grads have difficulty getting jobs outside of the New York City metropolitan area, but I do have a guess about one possible contributing factor. The bottom line of these studies is, the law school’s name affects its reputation far more than you would imagine.Most of these studies follow a similar format. The researchers invent phony names for nonexistent law schools and then ask people who are supposed to be experts in the field — attorneys, judges, law school professors, etc. — what their opinion of these nonexistent law schools is. The people who respond to the surveys are remarkably willing to rate these phony law schools; they almost never say things like, “I’ve never heard of this law school in my life and I don’t believe it exists.”Phony law schools with names like “Princeton Law School” consistently receive excellent reputation scores. Phony law schools with names like “University of Alaska School of Law” are consistently rated as being good law schools. Phony law schools with names like “Alaska State University Law School” wind up in the second or third tier. And phony law schools with names like “Anchorage School of Law” have terrible reputations.The reputation hierarchy for nonexistent law schools is: (1) Snooty University School of Law; (2) University of X__________ School of Law; (3) X__________ State University School of Law; (4) law schools named after a city or county.Brooklyn Law School may suffer from this phenomenon.
