PDF Editor FAQ

With all this mental health awareness, why does it still feel like no one understands?

I think the best way to answer your question is to break it down into two bits!1. The effectiveness of mental health awareness campaigns, and2. The perception of the individual suffering from a mental health condition (being understood and acknowledged).Effectiveness of Mental Health Awareness CampaignsResearch and anecdotal evidence suggest that the social stigma associated with mental illness has been reduced or minimised via mental health awareness campaigns. Over the last two decades many Western countries (Government, Private & NGO's) have used the following platforms to reduce social stigma associated with mental illness:television adverts, music concerts, television Documentaries, andcelebrities to advocate for people with mental illness. In particular, mental health awareness campaigns have attempted to reduce the social stigma associated with mental illness. Unfortunately, they have mainly focused on high prevalence disorders like depression and anxiety. As a consequence, people suffering from psychotic disorders like schizophrenia or personality disorders like borderline personality disorder continue to suffer from significant social stigma. You only have to read some of the questions, posts and answers on social network sites like Quora, Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo and LinkedIn answers to confirm the extent of the social stigma associated with the above-mentioned disorders. Are Research Findings Reliable?A significant number of mental health awareness campaigns have not been followed up by research to gauge their effectiveness in reducing social stigma and disseminating accurate information. I know this sounds unbelievable in 2019 but many organisations (large, medium and small businesses) tend to hire people they know rather than the best person for the job at hand.In most instances this pattern of leadership results in a toxic working environment. In fact, a recent government mental health awareness campaign that cost the public millions of dollars only used a basic post-campaign survey to test the efficacy of the campaign. The data was limited to a small sub-group of people and the measures used have not been previously validated. As a consequence, the survey findings were unreliable and invalid!Qualitative tests often take the form of in-depth interviews or questionnaires that are rarely used due to the time constraints and the difficulty associated with converting written information (and patterns) into numbers or a binary numerical system. This is necessary for most forms of statistical analysis. The majority of the research conducted to determine the effectiveness of mental health self-awareness campaigns has used self-report measures. For example, questionnaires using the Likert scale system dominate the research literature.Self-report measures are preferred by researchers because they save time and resources. However, the results associated with these scales can often be unreliable. Many individuals that complete self-report measures want to paint themselves in a positive light. As a consequence, they systematically use purposeful deception when completing the questionnaire or scale.Other individuals' may lack insight or limited by their level of self-awareness and answer the questionnaires based on their perceptions and not reality. The perception of the individual suffering from a mental health condition (the importance of being understood and acknowledged)Most people will struggle with a mental health condition at some stage during their life. Despite this and mental health awareness campaigns, most people do not know how to broach the topic or how to lend support to a family member or friend that is struggling with a mental illness.People that suffer from a mental health condition tend to have a negative or gaunt outlook. There are exceptions to this broad sweeping statement:People with personality disorders and other severe disorders. Moreover, a significant number of so-called therapists, psychotherapist's, counsellors and mental health workers cannot establish positive empathy with their client or patient. Further, many of these mental health workers find it difficult to relate with their client or to understand their client and their predicament. In fact, many clients/people report that they do not feel understood by their families, friends and mental health workers. I believe that the core reason for this perception is because the person does not feel that they have been acknowledged.I believe that people struggling with their mental health want to hear that those around them understand and acknowledge their situation. It shouldn't be so difficult to acknowledge another person. See below:I see and feel (to an extent) what you are going through,You are significant,I understand you,I admire your resilience. The need for being understood and acknowledged is a basic human need! Unfortunately, we all need to practice paying more attention to those around us and acknowledging them and their existence.Kamal

What do you need to conduct a social psychology research?

Since I was a2a, generally speaking, one should have a graduate-level education, an academic institution sponsor, and funding. Even some Masters degree holders in an academic setting I have known were not fully aware of the potential problems and guidelines for research (e.g., Institutional Review Board). If one is planning to conduct human subject research, to include survey questionnaires, that is associated with an educational institution, there is normally an approval process to ensure that human subject research is conducted in a manner that is not going to result in any negative consequences for those subjected to research. Federal regulations come into play whenever there is any federal involvement with the educational institution, and those regulations require that the institution form an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to authorize all human subject research prior to any implementation of the research.Throughout the United States, institutions that conduct or facilitate research with human subjects – such as universities, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies – have created committees, known as IRBs, to review and clear research projects. These IRBs are mandated by federal law or are established pursuant to voluntary agreements between the institution and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. CUNY has such an agreement. The purpose of the IRB system is to ensure that researchers adopt protocols that protect the health, privacy and autonomy of the research subjects. In the past, subjects have been injured physically and psychologically by researchers insufficiently sensitive to their needs and interests. IRBs are tasked with reviewing the relevant research to ensure compliance with federal regulations. These regulations may be found at 45 CFR 46.101-409 and 63 FR 60364-60367. The complexity of the IRB process is largely attributable to the complicated nature of these regulations. (John Jay College of Criminal Justice, n.d., para. 1)Even if not associated with an academic institution or in any way funded federally, there are potential liabilities that must be dealt with.ReferenceJohn Jay College of Criminal Justice. What comes to your mind when you see garbage being dumped in empty space? How can you effectively use such empty spaces?

Waste poses a threat to public health and the environment if it is not stored, collected, and disposed of properly. The perception of waste as an unwanted material with no intrinsic value has dominated attitudes towards disposal. This study investigates the domestic waste practices, waste disposal, and perceptions about waste and health in an urban community. Methods:The study utilized a mixed-method approach. A cross-sectional survey questionnaire and in-depth interview were used to collect data. A total of 364 household heads were interviewed in the survey and six key informants were interviewed with the in-depth interviews. Results: The results of the study revealed that 93.1% of households disposed of food debris as waste and 77.8% disposed of plastic materials as waste. The study also showed that 61.0% of the households disposed of their waste at community bins or had waste picked up at their homes by private contractors. The remaining 39.0% disposed of their waste in gutters, streets, holes and nearby bushes. Of those who paid for the services of private contractors, 62.9% were not satisfied with the services because of their cost and irregular collection. About 83% of the respondents were aware that improper waste management contributes to disease causation; most of the respondents thought that improper waste management could lead to malaria and diarrhoea. There was a general perception that children should be responsible for transporting waste from the households to dumping sites. Conclusion: Proper education of the public, the provision of more communal trash bins, and the collection of waste by private contractors could help prevent exposing the public in municipalities to diseases.
