Those European or American naturalised Jewish people are not noticeable as they are seen merely as Europeans/Westerners who naturalised as Bangladeshis and are registered under respective European or American ethnicities by BD authorities and not separately under Jewish ethnic or religious groupings hence difficult to tell. Furthermore, their often embracing of/conversion to Islam following marriage makes it difficult to identifying them on their Jewish roots.Having said this, coming to the main answer in terms of Jewish roots/ethnicity, the majority of Bangladeshis (other than the indigenous native tribal people) come from homogenous background of mainly Indo-Aryans which, like neighbouring India and Pakistan, also consists of those Indo Aryans with mix Arab, Persian, European and Mughal (Turkic/Timurid) ancestries, including those descending from European ancestors which includes few European Jews - a reminiscence of the past Portuguese, French and British imperial colonial settlements in the Bengal region of what is now Bangladesh and the wider Indian subcontinent. Many of who’s (mainly) matrilineal (and some patrilineal) ancestors married with the locals (often, but not always, followed conversion to Islam). The exact percentage of presence of Jewish (mainly matrilineal but also some patrilineal) roots is difficult to compute but it is estimated to be at least half of the numbers of those attributed to or those belonging to mix Arab-Persian European ancestry. A historian at Delhi University, whose name this writer cannot exactly recall, said at a brief encounter back in 1996, that the numbers of Jewish ancestry, again mainly in terms of matrilineal roots (that is being descendants from the female Jewish line for the purpose of this paper, ignoring any other formal definitions), amounts to roughly around 10% of the population at the highest end, and 5% at the conservative estimate. Almost majority of the Jewish roots that are found in mainly Muslim Bangladeshis are those with either mix Arab Persian ancestry or those who were of the ruling aristocratic or formerly Indian/Bengal princely state/Nawab families, landowners and merchant class families. Within Bangladesh, historical Dhaka and the north eastern region of Sylhet, has historically seen large concentrations of such families belonging to Arab Indo Aryan descent, with Dhaka being more concentrated with families of mostly descended from non Arab-Mughal Persian Nawabs family backgrounds and Sylhet concentrated with the former. Chittagong also fits into similar narratives of both Dhaka and Sylhet, being more closely aligned with the demography of similar heritage of Sylhet albeit with tinges of tribal indigenous past and of Buddhist heritage.Before moving on, it is to be noted that majority of the Jewish roots that are found among Muslim majority Bangladeshis (and among the Muslim citizens of the ruling class families or of princely heritage in the wider the Indian subcontinent) are mostly of matrilineal as opposed to patrilineal. This is in part due to both Pre Indian Arab Muslim historical legacy, and the post 16th century European/British imperial legacy, both of them are outside the scope of discussion here. In the contrary, among those who identify with Hindu roots or are Hindu Brahmins/and or of atheist heritage, very few have identified themselves having some traceable patrilineal Jewish roots (that is being descendants from the male Jewish line, who’s Jewish male ancestors (of mostly colonial settlements and imperial officials) married the local Hindu women mainly belonging to ruling Brahmin Kshatriya class or landowners/zamindars, either by falling in love with them or through some form of mutual arrangement, the former being more common).Further on from discussing the matrilineal Jewish roots among Muslim majority Bangladeshis (and the wider Muslim Indians and Pakistanis of the Subcontinent), the presence of Jews or more so of the past Jewish roots falls into two categories or periods:The first category is of mainly Mizrahi/Sephardic Jews in the early periods that coincided with the historical arrival of the Arabs and Persian traders along with Turkic and Mughals, mainly during the period of 12–16th century (and in some cases even earlier).The second period/category is the arrival of European incl British colonisers/setters from 16th century, all the way to 20th century of the last imperial rule of the British Raj. The first period relates to the presence and roots of the mainly Sephardic (of Mizrahi/Arab) Jews and the second period relates to European Ashkenazi and European Sephardic (of Spain/Portugal) Jews; both of them are prevalent in the families of mainly Bangladeshis that has a lineage or roots to Jewish ancestry.Starting with the first one, a good number of Bangladeshis with mix Arab Indo-Aryan ancestry (and those whose ancestors who are of mix Indo Aryan and European roots), are also matrilineally Jewish descendants - who’s Arab paternal ancestors married Jewish (mostly sephardic/mizrahi Jewish) women on conquering the region or the Jewish women subjects converting to Islam. Later those Arabs ancestors or their Arab descendants migrated to the Indian subcontinent from 12–15th century onwards (some have reportedly commanded armies and fought along with the Gurids in the 11th century onwards), conquered or settled and married with the local Indo-Aryan/Hindus/Hindu Brahmin women in the regions of Bengal and Assam which includes modern day Bangladesh and the wider India. In Bangladesh (and also in the wider Subcontinent) the Syeds/Sayyids, Quraishis, Hashmis, Sheikhs, Abbasis, Siddiquis, Faruqis, Fareedis, Osmanis, to name a few, are a good example of those with Arab ancestry, with a good number of having traceable matrilineal roots of Jewish ancestry (obviously that is not always the case as many Arab descendants are also matrilineally descendants of Hindu Brahmins and other Indo Aryan groups as well). In common with the then Indian Muslim rulers of Gurids, Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals, the group, being (patrilineally) also of Arab descent, enjoyed privileges of being appointed Muftis and Qazis (judges), military commanders, Muslim theologians, administrators and governors.Also among the Muslim majority Bangladeshis of non Arab Indo Aryan descent – again also consists communities with ruling class or aristocratic princely or landowning family backgrounds of mix Persian Turkic and Hindu Brahmin/Kshatriya heritage - the Mirzas, Ghazis, Ghaznavis, Mughals, Bahadur, Shah, Isfahanis, Sherazis, Nizamis, Dewans (and some Khans, Rajas, Chowdhurys, Subedars), Baigs, Lodhis and Kayanis (the latter three are more common in Northern India and Pakistan but a good few also exists in Bangladesh). Some members among this later group can also trace their partial matrilineal roots to Jewish ancestry, although this latter group of non Arab Indo Aryan descent’s matrilineal Jewish roots is much lessor in comparison to the former group of Arab descent Bangladeshis (and of those in the wider Indian Subcontinent).As for the second period/second category, the roots of European/Ashkenazi Jewish roots taking hold in Bangladesh (and also of wider Indian subcontinent), is of a result of post 16th century imperial legacy following the arrival of the European/British imperial power. These types of events took place during the periods of 16–18th century, often at the behest of EIC superiors.B) Jewish women/female members of the colonial settlements/EIC merchants falling in love through intermingling/interaction with the local ruling class family members of the Muslim Nawabs and Mughal era governors or land owners, right up to the early 20th century and latter marrying into the local family, more often than not on conversion to Islam. Equally, some family narratives and records (more common in West Bengal and wider India) showed that there are some families of Hindu Brahman/mix Hindu heritage backgrounds having some traceable patrilineal roots to European Ashkenazi Jewish imperial officers/merchants. This contrasts with many Muslim Bangladeshis and Muslims in India and Pakistan, who are of mix Arab Persian ruling class background having Jewish ancestry roots mainly on matrilineal lines.C) Some of the British Jewish (and of European Jews) colonial expats of both EIC and British Raj’s Indian Civil Service eras, out of their intellectual oriental curiosity for Muslim and the wider Indian region, covertly or even overtly became Muslims and later married with the locals, many of who’s descendants are today’s Bangladeshis (and Pakistanis and Indians), some who proudly acknowledges their mixed heritage and rich diverse backgrounds. Again, the female members/women folks were more in numbers to convert to Islam and marry with the locals, compared to the male members, as encountered by the writer.The first two, A & B are more common link for today’s descendants who can trace their roots to their mainly matrilineal Jewish ancestry of the second type and at the same time, trace their patrilineal roots to Indo-Aryan/Bengali or mix Arab Persian ancestry, the latter being the main identifier of their ethnic/ancestral roots based on their paternal lines of course. Bangladesh, along with the wider Indian subcontinent, like the majority of other countries around the world, identifies ethnicity and family lineage along the patrilineal lines and do not have formal concept of identifying as mix heritage or dividing the ethnicity along both maternal and paternal lines (which is a common feature in Europe and most Western countries). This is one of the reasons why, Bangladesh and the wider Indian subcontinent, like in the Arab world where there are many prominent Arabs who are indeed matrilineally descendants of the Mizrahi/Sephardic Jews, do not identify or recognise such ethnicities or heritages based on matrilineal terms.Coming to the question of pure Jewish roots or Jewish ethnic origin, there are few families with Jewish (mostly Mizrahi/Sephardic) roots with both matrilineal and patrilineal ancestry (some of whom are identifiable with selected Arabised/Indianised/Banglacised Jewish origin family names and now treat their Jewish background as more of a clan among many other clans in the wider subcontinent as opposed to being seen as solely Jewish ethnic background). They have fully assimilated into Indo Aryan communities of the subcontinent, which includes modern day Bangladesh. They in fact define themselves as either Bangladeshis or Indians (or Pakistanis) in their respective countries. Furthermore, being almost of Muslim background over centuries following embracing Islam by their Jewish ancestors has added more layers among other factors of recognition. They, like the Parsi and Khoja communities in the subcontinent, mostly belong to the well established merchant class families, who, like the Parsis, often enjoyed patronages and privileges during the British imperial rule; they safely guard their bilineal Jewish family line, not as a Jewish heritage but more as a part of South Asian Muslim Bangladeshi tradition. They even define their ethnicity as of belonging to Indian Subcontinent including those of Bangladesh as Bangladeshis. Like the Parsis (who are mostly non Muslims), the Muslims of bilineal Jewish roots have continued with the tradition of marrying within the family or within related clans but that has not always been the case in the face of the rise of modern liberal values of intermarrying. Again, their numbers are difficult to gauge. However, according to estimates, it amounts to anything between 0.15 - 0.25% of the population. Mostly are confined to the Dhaka metropolis and some in Chittagong, while in India its almost all are confined to Mumbai, Surat, up to some extent in Kolkata and in Pakistan, almost all are confined to Karachi.Those who do have some family records are preserved over centuries and passed down through generations (few of them this writer was fortunate to see) have kept such records strictly to the confinements of family/tribal discussions which occasionally props up at the time of marriage proposal when full family lineages are discussed or on occasions of being recruited at senior military or government level when extensive forensic checks are being carried out by the respective intelligence authorities (a common feature in the Indian subcontinent along with many Arab GCC countries), as a former Bangladeshi military attaché explained.It may not also be surprising to see that many of the narratives that has been passed down through generations and family records would show that the Jewish women folks on embracing Islam and getting married, or falling in love and marrying with the locals of the ruling class background of the Arab and Mughal descents, made a tremendous sacrifice by being shunned altogether by their respective families of colonial expats (or they were forcefully sent back to their homeland or exiled or their proposed local spouse was exiled, forcibly disappeared or worse executed according to family narratives preserved through generations, often further evidenced in some family’s well guarded love letters or correspondences which the writer came to view on visiting the ancestral house/at the main seat of the respective families, to whom the writer couldn’t be more grateful enough to win their hearts to share some of the family records). This became more evident during the later colonial years of 17th to early 20th century. Those converted Jewish women paid the ultimate price of being forgotten, shunned or boycotted for marrying with the locals, in many cases on embracing/converting to Islam as mentioned in the above three events.To conclude, although there may not be pure ethnic or religious Jews in Bangladesh in modern sense but historically speaking and looking for presence of traceable Jewish roots, there do exists among Bangladeshi (and wider Indian subcontinental) people, a decent number of people with (more often) matrilineal Jewish ancestry. They (including in the wider Indian Subcontinent) can be categorised as follows:The pure Jewish/current practicing Jewish community as commonly understood in other parts of the world, namely the Western countries, are very minimal and almost non existent, notwithstanding the presence of some foreign Western expats of Jewish backgrounds or the European Jews who are naturalised Bangladeshis following marriage with the Bangladeshis (with the latter almost all converting to Islam hence no longer officially identified as Jewish people, nor do they wish to be identified as such following conversion to Islam; more so they are identified by the authorities by their respective European origins, as BD municipal and immigration authorities confirmed back at the time of research, back in 1999).The historical Jewish matrilineal roots in Bangladesh (and the wider Indian Subcontinent) can be traced to two periods:Mizrahi-Sephardic Jewish roots of early period, between 12–16th century, which coincided with the arrival of the Arab traders and conquerors/arrival of Islam and Muslim rule.
