Swimming: I lost my High School State Championship in the 50 free by .04 seconds.Not .01, but still about the distance of a hand.Close enough for me to go to the locker room after the race and scream a curseword into a towel.I remember leaning my head back into the locker.“If I’d reacted to the start quicker, if I’d had a better turn.If I’d dieted better. If I’d trained a little harder. If if if if.”In swimming, these are important races for us. We train all season and prepare for these races.We visualize and put mountains of effort into having the perfect race.Only to lose by .04…..It’s brutal. It’s almost better to get 3rd than to get 2nd by a hair.I was sure I’d never get over it.A few days later, as we were leaving the swim meet, all the different schools were loading into the buses to head back to their home towns.The guy who beat me, Eric, who I didn’t know personally, waved from his bus, and came walking over.He came up to me and say, ~“Hey Sean. Good race the other day.”I said something to the effect of, “Yeah - you got me a hair there. Good race.”He said, “It was all luck man. Good race.”I really admired how humble he was in victory. He’d made it a point to come over and shake my hand. Introduce himself. And say “good race”.It was a good reminder to stay gracious in victory and defeat.

Quora had no problem with my post.)From the 1920’s until the mid 1970’s, in almost all YMCA’s, and many, many jr. high and high schools, and some colleges, boys were NOT allowed to wear bathing suits and girls HAD to wear bathing suits. The only exception was for swim meets. Boys and girls had separate classes.But at the YMCA’s, at the end of the course, there was a Family Night to see how well the boys and girls learned. Mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters and often the sister’s friends attended. After the girls swam, they joined in to watch the boys as well. And, of course there were “physical changes” in a few of the boys genitals during the Family Nights. There were reports and articles in newspapers about the attendances. In Sheboygan, WI. an article gave the figure of 650 in attendance. In New Orleans over 1000. However, there were many YMCA Family Nights where the boys were told to wear bathing suits and others that gave the boys a choice. There are many stories that girls “accidentally on purpose” would see the boys swim class. If an instructor wasn’t able to attend, the girls team coach would teach the class. In many cases between 18 and 25 year old instructors. The reason…tradition. It came to an end, oddly because of feminism. The girls wanted to swim with the boys, so the “tradition” changed to everyone wearing bathing attire.Dear Abby and Ann Landers highly approved of this practice, even in private pools where a dozen or so boys and girls did this as a form of normal swimming family policy. Female reporters are allowed in men’s sports dressing rooms. Male reporters are allowed in women's dressing rooms but only after the ladies have showered and dressed. Film and cable tv have exposed literally HUNDREDS of penises; the vulva, ONCE, Rosario Dawson in Trance. The Olympics are a huge series of athletic meets organized by the various sports organizations.The various meets that make up the Olympics are run by the international sports organizations for each sport, in similar fashion to the World Championships in their sports.The International Olympic Committee and the Olympic city’s Olympic group are the high-level organizers of the Olympics, and are responsible for facilities and such, but qualifying athletes for the Olympics is up to the individual sports organizations in each country.For example, to represent the US in swimming, you have to have an “Olympic Trial” qualifying time in your event(s), and you go to the Olympic Trials swim meet organized by USA Swimming.You then swim against other swimmers in your events, and if you come in high enough in an event - first two in each event for US Swimming - you will compete for the US in your event.USA Swimming is part of FINA, the international swimming organization that actually runs the Olympic swim meet.As far as I know, other sports in the US are similar, and most other countries have similar “top finishers in the country’s Olympic qualifying meet will go” schemes.
