My life completely changed after my first job.Before the Coronavirus pandemic started, I was busy preparing for several campus placement, sitting for a number of companies GD and Technical interviews, HR interviews. I got placed in two companies before February 2020. But was not happy with the placements I got. In mid of March, we got an email from the Training and placement cell that we will be having our technical and HR interviews of Larsen and Toubro Construction within 10 days after an interval of 7–9 months of the first round. Till this time I had completely lost the hope for this interview. And just one week after that mail, the situation in India started getting worse, we were told by the college that we have to vacate the hostel ASAP. So on 17th March, we booked our tickets to our home.I was all alone in my coach, no company till Rajendra Nagar Terminal, Patna.While we were on the train, we got a call from the training and placement cell that our interview is scheduled tomorrow. Do it consistently and you learn very quickly. A lot of the time the information is out there in bits and pieces. Using Google Scholar is often useful in finding stuff. About half my answers are about stuff that I only know a little about when I start and it is really worth it when you have a good answer. The deal is not fair at all. It is way too good for the UK.As you can see below, the net contribution of the UK per capita to the EU was tiny compared to other richer EU members. Less than €100 per citizen per year, is that really worth whining about?Considering that the UK economy size is comparable to that of France, it is surprising that the UK total net contribution is significantly lower.The UK total net contribution is comparable to that of the Netherlands, a far smaller economy!How Much Does the EU Cost the UK? - Select Statistical ConsultantsThe reason the UK net contribution is so small compared to other rich EU members, is that the UK has been demanding special treatment and discounts for decades. For some reason, many Brits have always felt they somehow deserved that. Or more likely, they were told by populist politicians that they were paying too much, and never bothered to look up the actual numbers that I so easily found.There has to be a point when the EU says: This is it. We will not give you any more special favors, it would not be fair to the other members. Unfortunately, this eventually caused the misinformed population to vote for Brexit. Thinking that the EU could not do without her entitled, underpaying member, the Brexiteers expected more special favors. Well, I guess they are finding out now that the EU family is pretty much done with them.The UK could have chosen for models used with Norway, Switzerland etc. These countries are perfectly happy with their arrangements with the EU. But what is good enough for them, was not good enough for the UK. It has to end somewhere, and that is the deal that is now on the table. Better than any country inside or outside of the EU has.And they might still not take it, even while it is undisputed that no deal will have terrible economic consequenses for the country.Crazy. Hope it is just a negotiation tactic and they will take it last minute once they realize this is as good as it gets. And not because I am afraid of the consequenses for the rest of the EU, or the Netherlands, where I live. We will probably be welcoming lots of new business and skilled workers. London can obviously not remain to be the financial capital of the EU when it’s not in it.Edit: with regard to all other problems supposedly caused by the EU, I would like to ask the question why other (Western) European countries aren’t experiencing these problems? In Germany, Spain or Finland and anywhere inbetween, major problems are not blamed on the EU. Sure there are problems everywhere, but most countries just solve them instead of pointing fingers. It is also clear that the EU is not perfect, but it is stupid to think walking away will solve anything. The UK will be that rather small foreign island next to the EU. Do you really think that is an improvement for the UK?Edit 2: Brexiteers claim the UK lost its sovereignty to the EU and can’t wait to get it back. This surprises me because in the Netherlands and other EU countries we hadn’t noticed we lost our sovereignty. We understand that if we join a trade block with 27 other countries it means we have to set the trade rules together. Apparently brexiteers believe they can be part of a trade block but still set all the rules by themselves to serve their own interests only and ignore the interests and wishes of the other members. Do they confuse the EU with the British empire?I hope the Brits will accept the deal (or even better, stay in the EU), because I care about the UK and don’t want to see them in decline. It is undisputed that this decline is real, and in the long run, the expectation of recovery and overall improvement is based on wishful thinking and zero facts.
