Back in 1985, I was Drill Sergeant stationed at a base that was just implementing the Drill Sergeant program. I had volunteered to come to this base and help be one of the “founding” DI’s. That being said, I was not at a base that supported my job specialty. We had three company’s - led by Captain; One Battalion, led by a LTC with a major as an assistant; and we were part of a Brigade led by a full bird Colonel…and above him was the base commander, a two star general.I had decided I was going to apply for Officer Candidate School. I was coming up on nine years of service by this time, and it was now or never. Problem was, I needed a Letter of Recommendation from a “Flag Officer” (that is a full bird Colonel or above) that was NOT in my immediate chain of command. Problem two, this packet had to be endorsed BY my chain of command.I knew no one who even had an inkling of who I was at this base, except my chain of command. It appeared I was stuck…I would always go out for six or seven mile runs during my lunch break (after the troops ate lunch and went to class for the afternoon…I had about two hours to myself before I had to be available to pick them back up from their classrooms). My route carried me by a set of offices that every now and then would deploy a Brigadier General’s colors (a big red flag with one white star right in the middle). This signified that a One Star General was in charge of whatever support unit that was and was in the office…Well, one day I was on my run…all sweaty…and was running past that office…when I figured, “Hey, I’ll just pop in and make an appointment to see the General under his “open door policy” (they all had one)…and then explain the situation to him and the worst he could do was say ‘No’ to my plan.”So, I turned around and went to the office…all sweaty still…and walked in and approached his secretary. I explained I was a Drill Sergeant and briefly asked to make an appointment with the General.About that time, I hear this voice behind me ask, “Do I know you?” I turned around and it was the General. I saluted and all that and explained, in about three sentences why I wanted permission to see him. He just looked at me…then smiled and said, “It took a lot of balls to come in here to do that…we need officers like you…hell yeah, make the boy an appointment!”When I went back for the appointment, he took me outside to a picnic table and asked me several questions and was taking notes…then he said…kind of “tongue in cheek” - you’re as good as in with this letter…not that I have any pull or anything like that…but the selection board is made up of several Lieutenant Colonels and led by a Full Bird Colonel. If they reject you - they are, in effect, rejecting me…and they never know how close we are, how it is I have come to give you this letter…so pack your bags, son…you’re as good as in. I don’t know of any Lieutenant Colonel that would ever try and tell a General he’s full of shit!”Sure enough…just a few months later, I was on my way to Officer Candidate School! I used that method throughout my life after that…When you need something - ASK. The worst they can do is say no. And if you can find “the boss” of who ever you are asking about…and get them to “intervene” for you…it’s as good as done.SO - although this General actually had no authority over the board that was being convened for the selections…because he WAS A GENERAL - that really was all I needed.Plus, when I submitted my packet…the Captain, LTC and COL were NOT going to say no…LOL
