What do you do when your kid says they want colored hair?

One day after an ordinary day in 6th grade, I was riding in the car with my mom.“Mom? Can I get my hair dyed blue?” I asked.“Blue? Why blue?” Mom responded.“I love the color blue! And I think it’d look really cool to have blue hair!” I said.Blue always made me feel safe, more comfortable. I always had to wear blue. Even if it was just blue socks or a blue bracelet, I’d feel good. Blue hair would be cool and I wouldn’t worry about finding something blue every day.Mom pondered the request. “How about this, we’ll try color hair spray first. We can see if you like it before we go to something more lasting.”I was thrilled! And not long after, mom got blue hairspray and did my hair. I’d get the hair spray done every few days when the color started washing/fading out. Meanwhile I loved it! I looked really cool with dark blue hair. After some time passed, I felt braver. I wanted to try something more lasting. So I went back to mom.“Can we try hair dye this time?”“You did well with the hair spray so sure. We’ll try temporary dye.” Mom said. “Do you want blue again?”“Actually, can we try purple?” I asked.“Purple? Hmmm. You would look good in purple.” Mom said, thinking it over. “Sure, let’s go for it.”So we did purple hair. Again, I loved coloring my hair differently. It was like art therapy, in a strange way. I looked like an anime character, which inspired me to be a bit braver.Mom continued to help me with dyes. We came up with a rule; no blacks, whites, grays or light blondes. Only one hair color at a time (except one occasion where we tested orange & blonde on me) She paid for one professional treatment but said if I wanted more of those, I’d be paying. However extra chores would cover home dye treatments and my mom would have to be the one to do it.Meanwhile, I did every color of the rainbow minus the banned ones. I was even a redhead for 5 1/2 years straight! I stopped in college due to time and money, eventually forgetting about coloring my hair. I do want to try doing tips of my hair colored blue sometime though it might be a bit before I save up money for a good treatment. My mom handled it well. She assumed it was a phase or artistic expression. Not only supportive but she also guided me through techniques and responsibility for hair care that lasts even to today. We bonded through the home dye treatment nights. If I had a kid who wanted to do their hair, I’d be the same. I’d set some ground rules and we’d go slow first, test out the waters before diving to really crazy territory. I’d also make sure the kid has responsibility for their hair care too.

What are some of the best call signs for Navy pilots that you have heard of?

Well, I'll throw this in despite not having the experience with hair care products your question asks for (Navy). We had a naive flight engineer student who made the mistake of thinking he could assign himself a cool call sign. Wrong. That drew heavy fire. And he was struggling in the jet mostly due to the low grade hazing from his instructors. On a long leg over the ocean he admitted — on hot mike, to having manually chopped up his own fecal log when the blue water didn't work in the lav. His call sign immediately became “Lumberjack. “ He never made it through the C-5 engineer upgrade which incidentally, is serious, and longer than the pilot's training. Lumberjack continued in his Air Force career albeit not flying and is probably retired now — hopefully not in therapy to get past his brush with C-5 aircrew. Call signs are often similarly ignoble. Godspeed Lumberjack.
