What are some books which are not related to the UPSC but are still helpful for the UPSC exam?

These books seemingly not related to are mandatorily required to be internalized (if aspirants want to clear with minimal glitches) for the CSE Exam esp the Main and PT part of it. In fact, I believe these books are equally relevant as the conventional stuff. Cool! Here goes:The Argumentative Indian by the Sveriges Riksbank Prize for Economic Science Awardee Amartya Sen is a tour de force. Think learning about medieval history through a comparitive study of diverse calendars!INDIA: An Uncertain Glory is a terrific book with dedicated coverage of Media, Health, Education, Poverty so on and so forthThe Environmental Omnibus by Ramachandra Guha. Solid book. It is at the intersection of P 2, P 3 and P 4 of CSMThe Makers of Modern India by Ramachandra Guha. I have known the importance of this book since the last 8 years and in fact in a recent paper of Sociology, 4 to 5 questions were directly handpicked from here.Poor Economics by Banerjee and Duflo is required readingIn fact, students who join batches spearheaded by me are advised to avoid unrequired books and instead to go for these readings to ratchet up their performance at the exam.

Can you describe a situation where you or a member of your family was treated with anti- Semitic attitudes?

Sure. Personally, I've had people yell anti-Semitic slurs at me from cars while I was walking on the sidewalk, minding my own business. It has happened enough that specific times no longer stand out, but such slurs have typically been something along the lines of “fucking Jews" or “dirty kike". One of my earliest experiences of anti-Semitism was having recess at my Jewish elementary school cancelled because the KKK was planning to march past the school and they were afraid for our safety; I believe I was in 4th grade at the time and did not understand that there are people who would want to hurt us who didn't even know us and who hated us just for being Jews. I've also had college professor schedule major exams on Jewish holidays (despite having many Jewish students who would not be able to take the exam as a result and despite the widespread availability of “multifaith calendars", “diversity calendars", “inclusion calendars”, etc. available to schedule much more inclusively) and who, once aware of the conflict, were unwilling to make reasonable accomodations, instead insisting that I violate Jewish law by taking the test or accept an F.My younger brother has experienced even worse. For example, in high school, someone who he didn't know punched him in the face because he is Jewish. In another instance in high school, someone whipped an apple at the back of his head from a school bus and yelled “dirty Jew".Related answers:My answer to As a Jew, have you experienced antisemitism firsthand? My answer to How strong is anti semitism among ordinary people in the States? My answer to Why are American Jews not making aliyah in larger numbers after the Tree of Life shooting?

Why do public schools have to be closed during a Jewish holiday?

They don't “have" to be closed and rarely are, except in districts where a large number of teachers and students are Jewish (as Jews are <2% of the US population, this isn't true of most districts). And, even then, while even relatively non-religious Jews tend to observe the high holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), far fewer observe the other holidays (Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, Simkhat Torah, Pesakh, Shavuot), so even schools that are off during the Jewish high holidays are usually not off during the other Jewish holidays. Accordingly, Jewish students who are observant usually have to do all sorts of extra work in advance of or after the holiday to make up for the missed time, whereas Christian students generally get all of their holidays off throughout the country. So, if there is any unfairness here, it is that Jewish students regularly have to play catch up and go through hurdles in order to observe the Jewish holidays, with public schools often forcing Jewish students to choose between their Jewish identity and success. And let's not also forget the many other after school sports, clubs, and activities that regularly exclude observant Jews by requiring Saturday participation. Or, worse, teachers who not only expect Jewish students to complete work during the holidays (during which work is religiously prohibited) but the many teachers who chose to also administer tests on these days, despite the fact that a simple Google search for “multifaith calendar" or “diversity calendar'” will return numerous results that make it easy to schedule inclusively.
