PDF Editor FAQ

An organization called GunVote used the phrase "Radical Gun Control?" as a tagline in an ad. Is it me, or are Republicans abusing the term "radical" lately?

Sorry I’m late to the party, we’ve had a hurricane (number four) here in Louisiana.Do you have a minute? Let me give you several examples of why the term “radical” is not only not an abuse, it’s dead-on. Hang with it, it’s fairly thorough and revealing. As a preface to my answer, I think it’s important to distinguish between the primary motivations for Americans who support what gun-owning conservatives might call “radical” gun control. Kerry Peabody recently wrote the following in his answer to this Quora question: What is the exact main reason why many in the left oppose firearm ownership? Is it because of inner-city violence, anti-government activists (III Percenters, The CSA, The Order) after the events in Ruby Ridge and Waco, or what other reason? in The Gun Discussion“The small ‘l’ left - your neighbors - actually believe that guns are the problem. They think that somehow, some way, making guns illegal will magically cause all of them (guns) - and violent crime - to vanish.”“The big ‘L’ - (The) Left - they want law-abiding Americans disarmed… Little ‘l’ wants to ban guns out of fear, big ‘L’ wants it done for power.”I believe this is the basic situation. About one-half of America doesn’t own a gun and probably never will. It’s not so much that they resent their neighbors owning guns as that they are tired of living in fear. They don’t want to be the next one who’s in the wrong place at the wrong time when some maniac decides to go crazy and kill people with a gun. They really don’t care that the neighbor thinks he’s safer with the gun. They don’t believe in that, and they’re not convinced that his need to feel safer with a gun trumps their need to feel safer by having no guns at all. For them, the Second Amendment is an abstraction, but their fear is very real. The above-described person doesn’t want to wait for our society to find a long-term solution to the ones among us with mental/emotional problems who are going on murder rampages, followed by suicide. When they look around, they only see one plan for immediate relief of their fears, anxieties, and their resentment of those who demand to keep guns, and it’s what I call “aggressive” gun control. I can relate to this sort of fear and the demand to “end the madness.” For them, the reality that no one has yet proposed a truly effective way to keep a gun out of the hands of the next Nikolas Cruz when the nation is awash in guns is beside the point. Then, there are the politicians. Many of them support gun control measures because it’s politically advantageous for them due to their district. I can guarantee you that if a pro-gun control politician came to my Louisiana voting district and tried to run for any office with gun control as part of the platform, he/she wouldn’t have a chance of becoming the dog catcher. Such politicians know that urban white liberals and many blue-state suburban women are very clued-in and energized on the subject, and being “aggressive” on it gets them votes. So, what about the “Radical Gun Control” agenda? Is it yet another conspiracy theory being circulated among the gun nuts and NRA members? There are several prominent members of the Democratic Party who are considered to be part of the Party’s “left wing.” They espouse the most aggressive proposals being publicly released to the press on gun control. In my opinion, they’re holding back. Some align with the Democratic Socialists, a wing of the Democrat rainbow coalition. For instance, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has made statements so radical in nature that only a defacto cover-up by the liberal-leaning national press has kept him out of the crosshairs of conservatives. Have look here: Mayor de Bolshevik An excerpt:“In order to make and implement these plans, the socialists of New York City would ‘love to have a very, very powerful government,’ explained the mayor, ‘including a federal government, involved in directly addressing their day-to-day reality.”De Blasio’s views on gun control are in synch with the most aggressive gun controllers, such as Beto O’Rourke. Here are excerpts from an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson. (Bill de Blasio tells Tucker Carlson why he is staying in 2020 Democratic race)“Regarding the policy of mandatory firearm buybacks -- an idea floated by gun control advocates in the wake of recent mass shootings -- de Blasio said military-style weapons have no place in the hands of civilians: "We've got to end the availability of assault weapons in this country," he said."I think that if there was a ban on assault weapons and there was a buyback program, the vast majority of people would do the smart thing and they would sell them back."“Carlson pressed the mayor on how he would react to citizens who would refuse law enforcement orders to surrender their rifles, adding that some weapons used to hunt game would qualify under some specifications for ‘assault weapons’. ‘You would have, unfortunately, tragically ... cases of violence,’ Carlson said.”“De Blasio said Carlson made an important point that would have to be dealt with in a responsible way.”“We cannot have assault weapons in our society. We've seen the devastating impact, they need to be banned. And that means, by definition, you don't leave millions and millions of them out there. The buyback is the obvious approach,’ he said, adding that push-back from gun owners would be ‘something we have to resolve going forward."De Blasio is no friend to the First Amendment for those who disagree with him. He said this on 10/07- (NYC mayor: Respect rules or face 'consequences'):“New York City's mayor urged residents to ‘respect’ the law after a neighborhood erupted in protests in response to new restrictions in areas where coronavirus cases are spiking. Bill de Blasio said, ‘there'll be consequences’ if people don't.”One of the most prominent liberal Democrat voices for radical gun control is somewhat more reserved about socialism. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has held democratic socialism at arm’s length, but not aggressive gun control. Cuomo and his allies made the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act of 2013, state law. The SAFE Act, passed during a late-night session at the Capitol in January 2013 shortly after the Newtown school massacre, made more than a dozen changes or additions to the state’s gun laws. Those included a boost in penalties for illegal gun ownership, an expanded ban on “assault weapons,” and bolstered background-check requirements for ammo and private gun sales. Andrew Cuomo presides over a state with laws that make it a gun-owner’s “hell.”SAFE Act charges are rising “Its hasty passage spurred an often-heated, polarizing debate on gun control in New York that has spilled into the courts, which threw out a portion of the law that prevented firearms owners from loading more than seven rounds into their 10-round magazines.”From N.Y. Rifle and Pistol Association brings gun rights case to Supreme Court on Monday:“In 2019, the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association brought litigation against a 2001 law preventing licensed hand gun owners in New York City from transport their guns to places like vacation homes outside of the city or to other spots beyond a list of approved shooting ranges. In response to this challenge, the NY Assembly moved to alter the city's law, saying that it was superseded by a state law that addressed the restrictions. But NYSRPA and other libertarian and gun rights groups that joined in the suit argued that the New York City law still contains restrictions that could deter gun owners from, say, stopping for gas on the way to second homes… ‘This case involves a challenge to an extraordinary New York City regulation that prohibits law-abiding citizens from transporting an unloaded firearm, locked in a container and separated from its ammunition, outside of city limits — even to a second home for the core Second Amendment purpose of self-defense, or to a convenient out-of-city shooting range where they would use it to hone the safe and effective exercise of that constitutional right…’ reads part of the original complaint from NYSRPA.”In other words, RADICAL gun control. But wait, there’s more! Much more. From 2ANYS (2nd Amendment New York State): 84 Percent of NYS Counties Suspend or Ignore Pistol Permit Processing Duties Amid COVID-19 Pandemic:“The 2ANYS phone survey revealed that, citing the March 7, 2020 state of emergency declared by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and similar emergency proclamations issued by a range of local governments across the state, 84 percent of all New York State counties (52 of 62 counties) have suspended or ignored their pistol permit processing duties.”“The vast majority of counties suspending or ignoring pistol permit processing duties cite the following very minor inconveniences as justification for wholesale cancellation of a fundamental civil right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution:Refusal by the county sheriff or relevant local police agency to offer fingerprinting services;Refusal by the county sheriff or relevant local police agency to engage in reference investigations;Shutdown of physical county court proceedings; and/orClosure of county facilities to in-person appointments by pistol permit applicants.”But, this is what has made it’s way into the public press. Have a look at what’s going on behind the scenes in the liberal-dominated, New York State Assembly.Last year, Governor Andrew Cuomo and his legislative allies entered legislation (Bill A-01724, 2019) to make it a FELONY to buy more than two times the magazine capacity of “assault weapons” ammo per 4 months for EVERYONE in New York State. If you have a 10 round clip, this means that you are limited to an average of five rounds per month or 60 per year. ”That’s a lot” you might say. If you’re an active target shooter or competitor, you will shoot more than 60 rounds in each target shooting session. From New York State Assembly: “…however, the sale of ammunition for assault weapons, as defined by subdivision twenty-two of section 265.00 of this title (see below), shall be limited to two times the capacity of an authorized weapon over a one hundred twenty day period. For purposes of this subdivision, "authorized weapon" shall mean a weapon registered in accordance with subdivision sixteen-a of section 400.00 of this chapter. Notwithstanding any law, rule or regulation to the contrary, the violation of this subdivision shall constitute a class E felony. This act shall take effect immediately.”A class E felony New York sentence might be 2-5 years in jail, depending upon the circumstances of the case. New York Felony: Class A, B, C, D, E NY FelonyBelow is how New York law currently defines an assault weapon. I know this is dense legalese, but those of you who know a little about guns will recognize many popular pistols, shotguns, and rifles, not AR-15s and not AK-47s. Those guns have attachments or designs that would be included in this law because they are semiautomatic and have ONLY ONE of the attributes listed below. Just take a few minutes to read this and see if you aren’t amazed. You may recognize one of your own guns in here.https://www.governor.ny.gov/sites/governor.ny.gov/files/archive/assets/documents/GunBillAWSec22.pdf:“N.Y. Penal Law § 265.00(22) 22. ‘Assault weapon’ means(a) a semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least one of the following characteristics:(i) a folding or telescoping stock;(ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon; (iii) a thumbhole stock;(iv) a second hand grip or a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand; (v) a bayonet mount;(vi) a flash suppressor, muzzle break, muzzle compensator, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor, muzzle break, or muzzle compensator;(vii) a grenade launcher; or…”“(b) a semiautomatic shotgun that has at least one of the following characteristics: (i)a folding or telescoping stock;(ii) a thumbhole stock;(iii) a second hand grip or a protruding grip that can beheld by the non-trigger hand; (iv) a fixed magazine capacity in excess of seven rounds;(v) an ability to accept a detachable magazine; or…”“(c) a semiautomatic pistol that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least one of the following characteristics:(i) a folding or telescoping stock; (ii) a thumbhole stock;(iii) a second hand grip or a protruding grip that can beheld by the non-trigger hand;(iv) capacity to accept an ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip;(v) a threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer; (vi) a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the non-trigger hand without being burned;(vii) a manufactured weight of fifty ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded; or…”“(viii) a semiautomatic version of an automatic rifle, shotgun or firearm; (d) a revolving cylinder shotgun;(e) a semiautomatic rifle, a semiautomatic shotgun or a semiautomatic pistol or weapon defined in subparagraph (v) of paragraph (e) of subdivision twenty-two of section 265.00 of this chapter as added by chapter one hundred eighty-nine of the laws of two thousand and otherwise lawfully possessed pursuant to such chapter of the laws of two thousand prior to September fourteenth, nineteen hundred ninety-four;(f) a semiautomatic rifle, a semiautomatic shotgun or a semiautomatic pistol or weapon defined in paragraph (a),(b) or (c) of this subdivision, possessed prior to the date of enactment of the chapter of the laws of two thousand thirteen which added this paragraph.”So, if you have a semiauto rifle with a 10-round detachable clip and a muzzle break or a thumbhole stock, like say, a Ruger 10-22 with an aftermarket thumbhole stock, you are limited to purchasing an average of 5, .22 LR rounds per month. Unless you get rid of this gun or change it, that’s ALL of the .22 ammo you can buy no matter how many other .22s you have. Here are several guns that under New York law are considered to be “assault weapons:”Above, Browning BAR. Detachable box magazine. Factory-installed muzzle brake. Bad gun.Above, Benelli R1 rifle. Detachable magazine shown below. Factory installed muzzle break. Bad gun.Above, SAS-12 semi-auto shotgun. Bottom gun, OK. Top gun, bad gun. It has a collapsible stock and a pistol grip. Same gun, cosmetic differences.Above, Ruger 10–22 (.22LR) with an aftermarket thumbhole stock. This is one of the most popular rifles in America. It has a detachable, rotary magazine. Bad gun.Above, Browning Buckmark .22LR pistol with a threaded muzzle capable of attaching a flash suppressor (this one has a muzzle brake). Detachable stock. It can be gripped by the barrel with the non-shooting hand. Bad gun.By making an infraction of this law a felony, if you are convicted of said infraction, under New York law the state can legally confiscate ALL of your guns because you have become a FELON! And, you can no longer purchase ANY guns. That is what they call the DEVIL being in the details. But wait, there’s even more! This is a nightmare that doesn’t end. Have a look at NY Senate Bill S1413, introduced in 1/2019 and currently in Committee. https://legislation.nysenate.gov/pdf/bills/2019/S1413:This is from the New York State Firearms Association. Are You In or Out? - New York State Firearms Association“Its goal is the passing of the nation’s first social media gun control bill, aimed for the 2020 legislative session. It would make the following the law to get a handgun license in the state of NY.” It proposes:“A mandate that you surrender your personal log-in information for all of your social media accounts before being issued a permit to buy a firearm.”“In fact, the legislation specifies that gun owners provide the log-in information for their accounts with Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, and Instagram.”“Government officials would then be allowed to go through THREE YEARS of your social media history when deciding whether or not you should be issued a permit.”And, it gets even worse.“A requirement that you surrender access to your computers and smartphone, and give government agents complete access to your online search history. This bill would compel you to give up your personal information to allow access to all search engines.”“The legislation specifically lists off the types of jokes and comments that they are looking for as they search for reasons to deny you a permit, but concludes with a blank check that states the investigator can consider ‘any other issues’ that they drum up.”There is no language in the bill about executing these computer file dissections in a timely manner. Currently, the application for a handgun license in NYC includes fingerprinting, a background search, and $428 in fees for this processing. Then you have to wait up to eight months for the license. The above law would likely “justify” a wait of a year or more and include a hefty fee for said processing. I suppose you could call that a “sin tax.”S1413 is an incredible violation of privacy and personal information and an assault on more Amendments than I can think of. It basically declares a person who wants to own a handgun as guilty until (or IF) proven innocent. To date these bills haven’t passed. I don’t know if A-01724 has made it out of Committee. But, this is the mindset and the sort of stealth campaigns to take or limit your rights being proposed and supported by liberal Democrats.Governor Andrew Cuomo is by all accounts a top contender for President in the near future. Forewarned is forearmed. Here’s a news flash. There are proposals moving through the California Legislature right now that would result in the termination of the use of many thousands of ordinary, non-semiauto hunting rifles, handguns, and even antique firearms. This would be the result of proposals backed by powerful CA environmental lobbies to make the use of lead bullets illegal. And, guess what? The alternatives commonly utilized as an alternative to lead, such as copper, are ILLEGAL in CA because they’ve been designated as “armor piercing!” There is no non-lead alternative ammo for the vast majority of non-shotgun firearms. This is how liberal lawmakers intend to take your guns away. Not through laws… these would be resisted by the electorate, even in CA and most of New York State. No, it’s through RADICAL REGULATION that they plan to take your guns. With the packed SCOTUS promised by the Democrats, they will do their utmost to use the power of the Federal government to do what’s being done in New York and California in every state. You won’t find this information in the national news. Firearms groups, Second Amendment organizations, and the NRA are the only sources of news on gun control efforts being done behind the cameras. Think about that.Have you had enough? Actually, for a supporter of Second Amendment rights, this is a nightmare with no end. Here are recent comments from Joe Biden: Biden website vows 'assault weapons' ban, forced gun registration and banning online sales of guns, ammo and parts“Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden vowed on his campaign website to ban online gun and ammo sales, limit gun sales, ban “assault weapons,” force gun owners into buybacks or registration, and various other restrictions.”“Biden’s campaign website also vows to ban all online sales of guns, gun parts, and ammunition. He also plans to restrict gun purchases to one per month to ‘reduce the stockpiling of firearms.”“Biden also plans to strip protections from gun manufacturers, paving way for them to be held civilly liable when guns they manufacture are used in a crime. However, some instances of this began when the Supreme Court allowed victims’ families of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre to sue gunmaker Remington. The company manufactured the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle that Adam Lanza used in the massacre to kill 26, and the families allege that Remington bears responsibility due to marketing the rifle.”This summer, Remington, the oldest American firearms company, filed for bankruptcy. Here’s its current status:Remington Arms Gun Company picked apart in bankruptcy:“Mired in debt and struggling to stay afloat, Remington Arms was forced into bankruptcy, wrestled onto the chopping block, and reduced to pieces of its former self. America’s oldest gunmaker is no more. ‘Tis a sad epitaph for Eliphalet Remington’s company.“Millions of Americans own millions of Remington guns, many of them being generational fans of the company’s products. They were no match for the federal regulatory jaggernaut. If product liability lawsuits for firearms manufacturers are upheld by a liberalized SCOTUS, it would spell the end of gun manufacturing in America. The companies would attempt to survive by making lawyer-proof guns but they would be too expensive and glitch-prone (“smart guns”) and would be rejected by the shooting public to the point where the companies would fail. There would be massive civil disobedience in the form of an open black market in unregulated guns.I could go on for several more pages but I’ll stop here. We are seeing a real-time culture clash happening in this country. When it comes to how people feel about gun ownership, my state of Louisiana couldn’t be more different than in a state like New Jersey or Illinois. I feel sorry for gun owners in a state like New York. No one likes the way guns are abused by bad and crazy people. That’s about as far as the agreement goes for now. Most of the current, politically popular proposals on how to address the problem are light-years apart.
