PDF Editor FAQ

Why did a business tell you that you weren't allowed on their premises any longer?

Lessons:Do not ask people to sign forms that create unreasonable obligations.Being banished from their premises was not to my disadvantage.I was an employee of a very large company that has long term relationships with its large customers. Vendor employees who will be spending a lot of time at a client are often granted a "Contractor" ID badge by the customer. In some industries and countries, applying for such a badge requires filling out a lengthy application form, getting finger printed, and signing several forms.I filled out the 13 page form. When I arrived to get finger printed and have my photo taken, they handed me another form to sign. Among other things, it stated that I accepted full personal responsibility for any damage or injury I might cause to their staff or property. Reading that, what came to mind was walking among the desks, tripping over a telephone cord sticking out, knocking a phone into the air which then lands on an employee's foot, breaking it. I crossed out that line item and signed the form. I explained that (a) I did not have my own professional liability insurance for business related liability and (b) my employer was responsible, based on the contracts between the companies. The security office person called the department manager. The manager said I should leave the premises.I contacted my manager, who had me fax a copy of the form to our corporate legal department. Almost immediately, the response came back that none of our employees should have ever signed that form. The customer's project manager said I should never come back. After that, whenever we had to meet in person, they came to our office. It was only 5 Km, but was still more convenient for me than for them.

What event made you fear losing your professional license?

A few years ago, I forgot to renew my RN and NP state licenses. It needs to be renewed every two years and is no big deal. However, the stars aligned, and both things that reminded me disappeared. For one, I was working as an independent contractor, so I had no supervisor or peers to hound me about it. Secondarily, my state board of nursing decided to save money by no longer mailing the reminder letter I had received every two years since becoming a registered nurse.I happened to realize my license was expired when I signed up for a continuing education class. In March, the 5th day of March! It was due by January 31, just over one month earlier! My heart actually felt like it dropped at least 12 inches. I called the state board after a sleepless night, practically crying. My voice shook, I quivered and sweated, I cannot recall feeling so apprehensive and sick, literally sick!Fortunately, the powers that be were understanding and kind. They reassured me that things would be okay, I would need to complete some paperwork but not to worry, these things happen. It would all be cleared up by the end of the week. No…hahaha, abso-freakin- lutely no! That's not how it went down at all, hahaha. I was transferred from one angry and astounded person to another. I had to tell my embarrassing take of how I hadn't renewed my license on time over and over. Each person seemed stunned, as a matter of fact, perhaps I was the first person to screw up on such a grand scale. The only nurse in my state in the USA who ever forgot such a momentous occasion. Well, actually, it really, sort of actually, is pretty momentous considering it’s my livelihood. This continued for approximately an hour, then I was informed that the only person who knew what to do in such an unusual situation had just gone home. I was free to call back tomorrow and discuss the problem with her. They hung up without giving her name or extension. After a seriously sleepless night, I called back the next day one minute after they opened. Well, we all just did the same thing again! Except, I was eventually transferred to the glorious creature who would enlighten me as to what I needed to do to get my license reinstated. Finally, we had the conversation that I will write down so you can enjoy it as much as I did. She: “Did you illegally provide care to any patient while you were in possession of a lapsed nursing license?”Me: (very meekly)“Yes.”She: “We will need a list of each patient you cared for during the time you were lapsed, and what you did with each person. We will need an accounting of any procedures you performed, and any medications you administered, particularly with regard to any narcotics.”Me: “OK,” having absolutely no clue how I would manage it.She: “Do you understand? I didn’t hear you!”Me: “Yes, ma’am.”She: “You are to write a letter to the Board of Nursing describing how you came to be in arrears as to your license’s validity. In this letter, you are to describe the circumstances surrounding your failure to renew your license in a timely fashion. What precisely was the cause of this error? You need to develop an action plan to prevent such an occurrence in the future. If you believe you owe anyone an apology, this would be the place to make that apology. This letter is to be notarized ”Me: “Yes, ma’am.”She: “Because your license has lapsed, before we will accept your paperwork, you will need to travel to a Federal Office. At this office, your fingerprints will be collected. They will give you a letter documenting that you have had your fingerprints obtained per FBI criteria and it will be notarized. Place this letter in your packet. Oh, to meet the FBI’s identification criteria, you will need two official forms of photo ID, your original social security card, your birth certificate including your birth photograph and one photograph each year up to and including this year.”Me: (Of course the references to previous photographs in the previous sentence was just me getting carried away.) “Yes, ma’am.”She: “You are to cease all nursing practice until everything has been completed, notarized, and shipped to me using US Registered mail. After it has been received, if it is received prior to March 10th, my committee will meet and determine it’s level of completeness. If it is received after March 10th, it will be reviewed the following month. If it is found to be completed to our satisfaction, it will be placed on the docket for an official review of the full committee the following month. If that committee finds in your favor, your license will be eligible to be renewed online. We will send you a registered letter notifying you of our decision and at that time you may renew your license in the usual manner. If the committee determines that you will not be eligible to renew your license, we will notify you of that decision, as well. In the meantime, you are absolutely forbidden to have contact with any patient for any reason.”Me: “What if the committee doesn’t find in my favor?”She: “Well, let’s just hope it doesn’t come to that, shall we?”Me: “Yes, Ma’am”So I went to get fingerprinted, it actually was the FBI location. Then collected all the information on all the patients. Wrote it up in a report like a term paper.I wrote the most sniveling, groveling letter ever written, apologizing to everyone at the Board (for their inconvenience), to my patients (for dangerously caring for them while unlicensed-I didn’t send to them, of course), and to the world, just because. The only one to blame was myself. No excuses. The only way I could do it was to go a bit overboard, so at least it amused me.Once everything was gathered together, it took a large manila envelope to mail—registered, signature, insurance—the works!Of course I had to miss the first deadline because there was so much to do. So I had nearly three months unpaid leave. Lucky I was an independent contractor, so I didn’t fire myself!I got a two paragraph letter stating I could now renew my license, and I did so immediately. The absolute relief as I printed my finally valid license cannot be overstated. To this day, I have occasional panic attacks and run to a computer to be certain I haven’t somehow forgotten to renew again!EDIT: clarification of time from January 31-March 5, thank you John Sargent!

As of 2018, can you fly with a temporary ID from Oregon? There is a possibility my friend won't receive his permanent ID in-time for his flight.

Temporary driver licenses are not considered valid identification by the TSA, but that does not necessarily mean your friend won’t be allowed to fly.First of all, does he have any of the other documents in this list? If so, he can use one of those as identification.Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)U.S. passportU.S. passport cardDHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependentsPermanent resident cardBorder crossing card (only applies to Mexican citizens)DHS-designated enhanced driver's licenseFederally recognized, tribal-issued photo IDHSPD-12 PIV card (an ID card for government employees and contractors)Foreign government-issued passportCanadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada cardTransportation worker identification credentialU.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)U.S. Merchant Mariner CredentialIf not, TSA does have an alternative process to confirm the identity of travelers who don’t have ID—for example, people who forgot their ID at home. He may be allowed to fly using this process. The best thing for him to do would probably be to gather up all the ID documents he can find—birth certificate, social security card, school ID card, credit cards, expired old driver license or passport, etc—and arrive at the airport at least two hours early. He should be prepared for additional security screening, including a pat-down. (He should also make sure he keeps all those ID documents in a safe place, so he doesn’t lose them during travel.)If he is going to check a bag, he will also have to show ID to the airline agent. He should call the airline to figure out what kind of ID might be acceptable.I was in a similar situation once, although it was back in 2006. I was allowed through the security checkpoint in Los Angeles with my temporary California driver license (a piece of paper with no photo) and my college ID card (with a photo). On the return trip, in Salt Lake City, these were not accepted as ID, but my social security card was accepted. I did not receive any extra security screening in either case, I didn’t have to fill out any forms, and it didn’t cause any delays.

Comments from Our Customers

I purchased a new computer and needed help migrating a copy of my software to the new PC. (It was registered/licensed to the old PC). I emailed Ice Cream Apps and within an hour or so they had responded and deregistered my software allowing me to register it on the new PC. I couldn't believe the responsiveness! The service and products are awesome! Highly recommend.
