Contrary to popular belief the A-10’s primary anti tank weapon is not the gun- but the AGM-65 Maverick missile. During the 1970’s when the A-10 was expected to take on T-64’s and the then new T-72, it could only destroy a tank with the gun from the right angle but the A-10’s low speed and altitude would enable it to drop a bomb and fire multiple missiles at a tank in a pass. The gun would be more useful against infantry and lighter skinned vehicles such as a bmp or BRDRM. In the modern A-10C the abbility to fire guided weapons from longer ranges has been greatly increased. So if the A-10 couldn’t destroy a modern tank- increasing the size of a gun would not matter as that would mean tanks were invulnerable to a direct hit from a 500 pound bomb. Now if you were asking - what if it couldn’t destroy a tank with the gun? then as I said earlier it would use bombs, missiles and rockets to take out tanks and use the gun for softer targets.
