Let us begin with the maths first.1. $ 80,000 assuming an exchange rate of 1 USD = 60 INR will net you 4,800,000 INR. Congratulations, you are a millionaire in India. :)Now let’s get to the sad part of taxes. I am assuming you are an American expat temporarily in Delhi. As such I am not much aware of the tax rules governing you so the figures will be different. The figures below are taxes officially levied on Indians.1. 250,000 INR per annum is tax free. Yay!!!2. 150,000 INR per annum you can invest and claim tax rebates.3. Some miscellaneous tax deductions apply lowering the net amount on which you have to pay taxes. This does not amount to much and so I am not elaborating further and taking 350,000 INR, i.e. summation of 1 & 2 above as tax savings.4. 350,000 subtracted from 4,800,000 leaves you with a taxable income of 4,450,000 INR. The tax slabs in the country are (please check for veracity as below may be outdated):a. 0 – 500,000 INR Taxable Income: You pay 10%b. 500,001 – 1,000,000 INR Taxable Income: You pay 20%c. 1,000,001 – beyond INR Taxable Income: You pay 30%5. With 4,450,000 INR as taxable income, you will be paying 1,335,000 INR as tax leaving you with 3,115,000 INR to manage your affairs. Let us round it off to a lower figure of 3,000,000 INR, i.e. 30 Lakhs INR per annum to make maths easy.Now with the maths out of the way things depend on what are your financial obligations. This depend upon:1. Any family to support.2. Any kids to educate.3. Standard of living desired.Below is based on a married couple with a single 6 year old kid to educate:1. You can afford a decent maid to do the house cleaning, buying groceries and washing clothes for maybe less than 5,000 INR per month.2. You can buy a nice brand new car. Just remember, Gas is equal to Petrol in India. And well diesel is still diesel. Pull up your car to a Petrol Pump (aka Gas Station) and there will be an attendant to fill up Gas for you. There is no explicit 87 Octane and 93 Octane ratings. The fuel is either standard or premium.Honda Accord. A relatively high comfort and reliable vehicle for Indian roads.If driving on the ‘other’ side is a hassle and you are scared for your life with way people drive in New Delhi, hire a driver. It will cost you around 15,000 INR per month. But then if you are coming from NYC, road scene will be exactly the same, just little more variety in the mix. :)Also remember that it is perfectly normal to drive 1 to 2 hours to reach your work place which incidentally happens to be only 10 kms i.e. 6 miles away.3. Assuming you are coming from an apartment in Manhattan, welcome to a life of luxury. The housing is far more affordable and you can rent out an independent house something we call as a bungalow in India. A typical bungalow looks like this:Equivalent of probably an independent house in US minus the lawn outside.Check rental websites such as http://www.99acres.com, http://www.sulekha.com, etc. and you can find a perfect apartment / independent house without breaking the bank.4. How do you look like? Are you either of: Caucasian, African, Native American, Oriental then rest assured; how much ever you try to blend in, people will know from a mile away that you are not an Indian. Expect that a lot of ‘enterprising’ folks will try to con you. Not saying this to demean my country at all, just forewarning you that you will be an easy target for scammers. Be aware and think before you agree on any goods or services.5. Unlike US where you can probably Google and find all you need to know about a place or business (generally), you have to try out the places. The maid and driver you get in points 1 & 2 will be very helpful in saving you from being scammed all the time.6. Education wise, there are a wide variety of options available for your kid. Private schooling is the way to go in India. Government schools though widely available are generally ill equipped. Depending on whichever school you decide on, fees can vary from 500 INR monthly to 10,000 INR monthly. Please check with your embassy which school to go to. It’s perfectly normal for kids to be travelling 1 or 1.5 hours to get to school and same back home.7. For extracurricular activities, check with the school you enrol your kid in. Sometimes, school offer extra activities charging monies. Other times, they can guide you to a good instructor. Ensure that the instructor has Basic English speaking skills. Indians speak a wide variety of language and there is no unifying language.All things done above let’s get back to maths. We started with 3,000,000 INR per annum i.e. 250,000 INR per month as money in hand. Below is a monthly summary of your expenses on basic amenities:1. Maid: 5,0002. Driver: 15,0003. House Rent: 50,0004. Groceries: 15,0005. Car Loan: 15,0006. School: 10,0007.
