PDF Editor FAQ

Why do people leave their luxurious life in the US and go back to India?

As someone who has lived in India for 22 years (across 4 states)and in USA for 7 years (across 4 states) I want to take a stab at answering this from my point of view. I added the last part because the reason entirely depends on your background, who you are, what your priorities are and what your status of immigration is.Definition of luxurious life: It entirely depends on what your definition of luxury is. I'd say US is more affordable, but I'd debate on more luxurious for day to day life. I come from office at 6:30pm (that's a luxury I have here being in tech that most IT people don't have in India I agree), but after that I cook my own dinner, wash clothes, do dishes after dinner. I calculated in an average I spend about 20 hours a week doing chores (grocery/laundry/cleaning etc). That's 50% of your weekly work hours…imagine the amount of extra stuff you can do if you had help to do that. I like most of my peers are a group of ridiculously highly paid software developers and top 5% of US economy and this is the picture. It's exponentially worse if you're poor. Yes you can maybe afford a better car or maybe a central AC and dishwasher, but depends on what luxury is to you.Cost of Living: Again depends on where you are living in US and India, but just because you're getting paid in USD (instead of INR) and you've the illusion of richness, you aren't necessarily rich. Compare Mumbai/Delhi/Bangalore with NY/SF/Seattle/LA or Jaipur/Chennai/Hyderabad/Kolkata with KansasCity/Portland/St. Louis/Denver/Chicago or whatever…cost of living is significantly higher in US than in India, many times even (and you get paid much more to account for that) but you aren't necessarily richer.Family and happiness : this point highly varies from person to person and situation and where your family is. The concept of family and society is way more closely knit in India than in US. (At the risk of encroaching into other people’s privacy). But when I was in India I would meet all my relatives frequently, people visit you often, chat, laugh, hang out, have dinner together. I knew all my neighbors and if my parents were it if town 3 people wil bring me food before even I woke up. It frankly gets too much at times, but it's a luxury compared to the secluded, super nuclear monotonous life you have here. (I've seen and lived with American families and they saw their own son for 10 mins to pick up dinner from the table to his room and 3 times for 30 secs each throughout the day). I sometimes miss the comfort and warmth of loved ones here. The concept of family and society is very very non-existent here.Festivals, Colors and Food : it's almost a crime to combine all of these in a single point, but brevity is important. Have you seen festivals in India? Durga Puja in Bengal, Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra, Balaji festival (sorry I don't know the name) in Southern India and a million more? Compare it to the sad 4th of July or Christmas fireworks or Thanksgiving. Let's not even get into food…if you've ever had good Indian food (that we just call food). I might be very biased, but I think a few billion people will agree with me that the food you get in India is a lot lot better than the food we get in US. Spicy food is not just more chili powder, desserts are not just sugar and chocolate. There's a tremendous amount of vibrancy and color and life everywhere you go. Compared to the “clean and organized” empty streets I walk in here or the miles of empty lands in most of the states.Starting your own thing : now, this is subjective. I talk for all the people who're here on F, L, J, H or any of those lettered and numbered visas. What if you're a really good cook, can you start your own restaurant or food stall? What if you're a really good photographer, can you start your own photography business? Or what if you're a great artist, singer, clothes designer, musician…nopes, uhu! You gotta do what the company sponsors the visa for. And 90% companies you can't work in even in your field s they don't sponsor visa. For tech that rules out any of the cool government jobs, working for CIA, NSA and SpaceX and a lot of really good startups, just to name a few.Second class citizen : Deny this all you want, but in 7 years I've seen and been a victim of racism so many times. From people giving you looks to women not wanting to date Indians to people passing comments driving by or on the road or restaurants to the shootings and go back to your country to the simple “innocent” stereotypes…you name it, I've faced it. Add to that, you're always required to carry proof of ID, visa and documentation that you're here legally at all times on you. (Most don't, but it's a rule). That means you gotta have ID, passport, visa and i94/i20/i797 on you at all times. Reminds someone of something? I spend a ton of my time worrying what paperwork to file, what application to give, what documents to save and all that. Every time before you do things, you think: “should I do it, is it allowed and what if I get deported?” And not “is it good for the society and should I do it coz I want to make this right”! And you're often worried what new policy the president will pass that will make you uproot your family here and go back!Disclaimer:I'm not saying US is all bad and India is all good. Both countries, like the hundreds others, have their own pros and cons. Just depends on what you want and how you see it.And the question was inclined to why people favor India over US having both options…so gave the answer in that light. Any views/criticisms welcome.Update:Wow, I never thought my rant would reach 740+ upvotes and over 35K + views!! Thanks guys!

What is the future of biotech in India?

Read and judge from this personal experience.Note : I am a business finance professional, my wife is a Scientist. This answer is my perspective of her struggles following her Biotech masters from IIT Roorkee.Year : 2006.My wife has just graduated from IIT, Roorkee with Masters in Biotechnology. Me, being naive and ignorant, assumed that since she was passing out from an “IIT”, finding a job will be a cake walk.I could not have been more wrong. She was in Mumbai (at a not so nice relative’s place) looking for jobs. She was struggling like crazy to find a decent paying job. Defeated, she returned to Delhi (her home), to continue her job search. She did find one, with a royal salary of ~15,000₹. It was one hell of a ride for her, travelling from Paschim Vihar to Ghaziabad, everyday. (These are the days before the Delhi Metro was covering the whole of NCR as today).Year : 2007.She got an offer from Astra Zeneca, Bangalore and relocated. There she worked for 2 years. Though she enjoyed the work, she hit the glass ceiling due to her “only masters” qualification. Her next job required her to travel from Sanjay Nagar, Bangalore to Electronic city. The real fun was return journey, especially when IPL matches were on!!Year : 2011.She got an offer from Singapore and was excelling in her job. She had a Russian boss, who groomed her and is still a mentor to my wife. (Incidentally, that boss is also in Germany now with a German pharma giant). Still, she was hitting glass ceiling due to her qualification limitation. We made a decision that she will pursue her Phd.Year : 2013.She got full scholarship admission to Heidelberg University’s Phd program at German Cancer Research Institute.Fun fact : German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, visited her lab during her Phd.This was the beginning of the next phase of her career. She defended her Phd in Dec,2016. During her Phd time, she has interacted with some of the best scientists, including attending talks from couple of Nobel laureates.Year : 2017.She decided not to continue with the lab work and move into a different profile. She now works as an editor with the Nature in Berlin. She gets to review path breaking research on a daily basis, from global labs before anyone even knows it.During her official conferences, she is one of the most sought after person.Since moving to Germany, some of the places she had traveled to for official purposes :New Jersey, USA,Vancouver, Canada,London, UKand within Europe.Planned 2019 :Boston and New York, USA,India,Singapore.(The running joke between us is that all of her Visas are sponsored by company while I have to pay for all of them!!)As I write this on a Saturday morning, she is attending another conference being organised at Charite, Berlin, interacting with the thought leaders from US, Switzerland and Germany.Since finishing her Phd, she has :guided numerous students, young professionals on their career, mentored 3 peers who applied for jobs in Nature…. 2 of them made it,gave talks to a young start up in Chennai and in IIT Chennai (during our vacations),reviewed numerous CVs and cover letters.I highly doubt that even a fraction of this growth would have been possible if she had not moved out of India.Future : A very normal observation I hear from my wife and her colleagues is that a lot of research papers they are reviewing are coming out of China. Very few, if any, are from India. What do you think the future is if the government does not puts its weight behind biotech in India? If you want to know more about how to create international careers, then follow Quora space : CDG - Career Development
