But there are nine which are split.Let’s begin the explanation with the long thin ones, Tennessee and Kentucky. Tennessee has borders with eight other states (more neighbors than any other state, tied with Missouri). Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia are entirely in Eastern time. Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri are entirely in Central time. Kentucky is split.If you’re in Eastern Tennessee, then you’re mostly closer to cities and states in Eastern time, and tend to do business not far away. So, Chattanooga, TN wants to be in the same time zone as Atlanta, GA. But if you’re in the Western end, you’re close to states on Central time. It borders Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio, all of which are Eastern time, Illinois and Missouri in Central time, and Tennessee, which is split for the same reason, being a long thin state.And then it also borders Indiana. Indiana looks weird.But Indiana makes sense. That southern tip? It’s in Central time, because it’s right across the river from the part of Kentucky which is in Central time, and it’s those few counties which are functionally closer to Kentucky than to Indianapolis. It fits like a puzzle piece with Kentucky. And that northwestern corner? That’s in Chicagoland, so they’re on Chicago time.There are a couple more which are just so long from east to west that they are culturally different at the ends.Texas — did you know that the Western tip of Texas is closer to the Pacific Ocean than it is to the Eastern edge, and that the eastern edge is closer to the Atlantic than to the Western tip? I’ve long thought that the US might be better served by having only two time zones — let’s say for simplicity that they are three hours apart and correspond to the present-day Eastern and Pacific time zones. Getting rid of Daylight Savings Time would be a good idea, too. Keep the clocks the same throughout the year, but let business hours adjust according to the daylight.The current system of time zones was established in the late 1800’s, largely motivated by the railroads, which wanted to standardize their schedule, and not have to wrestle with ‘noon’ in any given city being defined, to the minute, by its longitude. Assigning every city and county to a standard time zone, and don’t worry if the sun passes directly overhead at sometime as early as 11:20 or as late as 12:40 depending on where you are — that was perhaps a radical redefinition of High Noon, but doesn’t have a lot of impact on our lives. In the eastern end of the state, maybe they open their doors at 9:00 AM, because the sun has already been up for a good while, and in the western end, they open at 10:00, no problem with that — who says the world has to work “nine to five” everywhere. And then, just over the state line to the west, the stores open at the exact same moment as their neighbors to the east, but they call it “9 AM” and we call it 10 AM. We can live with that, and we have been living with that for over a century.But it used to be that it took a long time to travel far enough to reach a time zone boundary; crossing a time zone was a sign of a journey. Now, it happens in a moment. Of course your phone knows right away what the ‘correct’ time is, but I still have a wristwatch which has to be set. Changing it by an hour after only a short journey is an inconvenience. Moving toward this more electronic, and less mechanical are, our jobs and routines don’t have to be bound ‘to the clock’ as much as they once did. Let our communities and our personal habits adjust based on daylight. They don’t have to be tied to “Banker’s hours.” So I say, split the country into two time zones — make them follow state lines. Bring El Paso back into Texas, and then let us adjust our routines.
