The running sheet shall generally will have the following entries.The start time of an over - End time of an overEntry for each ball of the overThe time taken to bowl the overOver RateIn case of slow over rate, there will be an entry indicating whether the captain of the fielding side has been informed and at the end of which over. These data are necessary whenever Code of Conduct (COC) issues arise due to slow over rate.The timings also helps in understanding the pace at which the over was bowled and also the pace of changing between the overs.You can just imagine, this above said work keeps the 3rd umpire completely occupied during the entire course of the game.Bowler TrackingUsing the same running sheet, 3rd umpire also keeps track of which bowler is bowling, how many overs each bowler has bowled etc. These information can always be checked up with the scorers, but having these information in a piece of paper is always helpful for quicker communication with the on-field umpires.Substitution TrackingThe running sheet will also contains entry for substitutes tracking. Which fielder went out and what time, which fielder has come in as substitute, at what time the nominated fielder returns back, duration of absence of the fielder, whether that absence requires any penalty time to be served, when the penalty time for a fielder expires etc. Each and every bit of information gets communicated between all the three umpires.Time AllowancesThe running sheet is also used to keep track of the time allowances. i.e., the amount of time used up for ball retrievals, ball change, any medical assistance within the field of play, referrals/reviews, some special cases of time allowances for drinks and wickets fallen, any stoppages in play etc. These details are used while determining to check whether the fielding side has maintained their over rate or not.Revised Playing Conditions on InterruptionsWhenever play is interrupted, revised playing conditions are arrived at which are to be followed on resumption of play. All the 3 umpires does the calculations separately and cross check their numbers. But, in case of shorter interruptions, it may so happen that the on-field umpires may not get time to compute and they depend completely on the 3rd umpire to get them the numbers.Proactive Assists (To Avoid Delays)There are occasions when the 3rd umpire initiates communication with the on-field umpires proactively to arrive at right decisions. These are not written rules, but are followed as part of working as a team.Boundary Fielding - Whenever there is an instance of close call related to boundary fielding or boundary catching, the 3rd umpire immediately comes on the walkie-talkie and alerts the on-field umpires. If it is clear from the visuals that it is a boundary, then “boundary” will be announced. And if it is a close call, then “check” will be announced.Boundary 4 or Boundary 6 - Whenever there is an instance of close call related to boundary 4 or boundary 6, the 3rd umpire immediately comes on the walkie-talkie and alerts the on-field umpires. If it is clear from the visuals that it is a boundary, then “boundary 4 or boundary 6” will be announced.
