Should I drop out of high school and pursue a GED?

You sound like you've got all the answers. What do you want?A little joke...but really, that's what it will come down to: What do you want?Onward...To me the only rub is there's this 'accepted' standard that good grades and at a minimum, a high school degree means you're not below the lowest rung of dumb. The most telling quotes are these...Everyday I gaze aimlessly at the board learning information that I have learned in the 6th grade. I see other students acting aloof, Snapchatting their friends on their phones while the teacher attempts to teach the class something pointless.and...However, I do not have an interest in college as well, as I'm pretty sure that it won't help me in any sort of way.and...I don't see a point in spending the rest of senior year taking ridiculously stupid classes and night school for zero educational benefit. I don't care if people think I'm stupid if I say "I dropped out of high school" or that "I got my GED," because really high school has never benefitted me other than the friends I have made. When kids say 'zero benefit' it's usually for two reasons: 1) it's too difficult, deflective response or 2) they're too lazy. All your comments may be right. They may be wrong.Who the hell am I? No one. But, I may have a unique background that may help.1) I used to teach HS and college science labs. I also taught teachers how to teach. I was the guy up there teaching stuff you'll never use and is pointless in the form of Algebra, AP Calculus, Physics, etc.2) My college degree never really had much affect on getting me a job except that aforementioned teaching job, but then I needed an alternative certification to be able to get a job as a teacher. I got a degree in Math & Chemistry.3) I'm a software engineer/data scientist who is self taught. That is I didn't take computer science classes in college. So here's the situation, you're doing fine now and could do well for your entire life. You may not need to ever play 'the game' of working for anyone else. And that's fine. BUT, if you ever do want to (or heaven forbid in your case) need to work for someone else they're going to try to size up if you can do the job. There are certain earmarkers they look for as someone who takes ownership over tasks in their life, especially the NON-fun ones. They want to know they can count on you to do a particular job. So they might not know you. And if they don't, what are their best chances of guessing you'll "Get the job done"?So all things being equal and an employer doesn't know you, they're going to take the person with the more excepted credential. Just how it is.I personally don't really think there's much value in college except for one thing, the network you find and the friends and/or acquaintances you make. Again, this is only relevant if you plan to interact with the outside world in ways that are need based like a job or a mortgage or something you can't learn on the internet. So you may be 100% right or you may find yourself in a pickle later on where you have to 'play the game' and that means ideally you have a HS diploma and a college degree.Believe me, if you're smart enough to program in Objective-C you have to be intentionally RETARDED to NOT pass high school. I could get hit by a bus going 90 MPH every morning, have my brain scooped off the asphalt and pass all my high school classes. It is beyond alarming you can't pass simple classes that are totally worthless. That's real talk. You could take your tests blindfolded or put a different letter (A, B, C, D) on each of your fingers and whack them across your desk and whichever one hurts the most (F^$%!! C!! the answer is C!!!) is the answer and STILL PASS. It's that freakin' easy.College? Guess what, I'd 100% recommend you do NOT go to college. Why? Because college isn't any better content wise than high school and the MAIN thing to be successful in college is STUDY HABITS. It's doing shit when shit needs to get done. That's all it is. Instead of high school teachers giving you deadlines, reminders, etc college professors don't give a rat's rear end if you even show up for class. Thanks for your $350 a credit. I look forward to seeing you again next semester $1,300 poorer.Bill Cosby had a saying that was attributed to him, I don't know if he actually said it, you can Google it if you want to find out if he did or not - I don't care - it stands either way. But he said, "Do what you have to do until some day when you can do what you want to do."You may already be there. You may not.

When do high school students in America choose their subjects?

Opposite coast, but I think my school was not unusual in its graduation requirements. States, school districts, and schools themselves can change these requirements.4 years English3 years math3 years social studies (history)2 years science1.5 years Physical Education1.5 years Arts (music, fine arts, etc)1.0 years Occupational Ed (home ec, economics, psychology, wood shop, etc).5 years healthThose were the bare minimum to walk out with a diploma in hand. I believe 2 years of a foreign language is now required as well. The PE requirement was overkill if you ask me, but I was able to test out of that since I was involved heavily in the arts. The general progression of social studies is two years of world history, one of US history, and then one of US government.Highly recommended for college admissions (if subject isn't listed, it's the same as above):4 years English4 years Math4 years social studies4 years science3 years foreign language (4 was better)Even better if these were advanced/AP courses. But know that if you choose to meet minimum in one of the areas, you're going to be fine. I dropped both math and science senior year (much to my counselor's annoyance) and took only 2.5 years of my foreign language. Still got into college just fine.High school is meant for college prep. I ran into a lot of trouble for trying to drop my math and science classes senior year because it would "limit my options" in college. Never mind that I was planning on majoring in animation at an 1100 person school. Not knowing calculus and AP Physics would mean the end of my education.(Dropped them anyway. Never regretted it.)Keep an eye out for programs that take you off campus too! My school had several - one was a work study program with branches in dentistry, fire, auto, programming, etc. the other was Running Start, which got you into the local community college for free so you could earn credit for high school and college at the same time. There are similar programs in many schools across the U.S., but I'm not sure of the exact names.Welcome to the U.S.! I hear Boston's a pretty cool place to be.
