As a college student I had a summer job ferrying tourists between a resort in Florida and the local airport. One day, after I had dropped off guests and was unloading their luggage from my van, I heard an overweight airport police officer yelling at a confused, elderly woman on a cross-walk. I instinctively commented to him that he didn’t need to yell at her. Most police are great, but this one was a bully, and it was clear from his reaction that my comment was an affront to his ego. I knew when I drove off that there would be trouble later.The next day, I finished dropping off guests at the airport and was leaving in the bright orange resort van when I saw red lights in the rear view mirror. It was the same officer from the day before. He gleefully told me I was going 5 miles over the speed limit. I am sure he recognized me and the van, and pulled me over for that reason - happy to have his revenge on a mouthy 19 year old.When he returned to his cruiser to check my drivers license and write me up, he discovered that in his excitement to give me a ticket he had locked himself out of his running police car (how does that even happen?). It was hard to suppress a laugh when he told me. I have never heard of that happening. So, even if I got a ticket, the story was worth it.He used his radio to request a new set of keys and then, while I watched him in the rear view mirror of my air conditioned van, he stood in the heat by the side of the road until the keys were delivered by another officer about 20 - 30 minutes later. The whole scene looked ridiculous.I couldn’t wait to get back to the hotel and share my story. Though I still got the ticket, it must have been embarrassing for him to have to explain the situation to his boss. And, I am sure the experience with him (the bullying) partially was responsible for my decision to attend law school several years later. I also don’t regret challenging his rude behavior towards the elderly woman.

Since publicly exposing these local law enforcement activities it’s been a constant onslaught of stalking, harassment, and intimidation directed toward myself from Fresno Law Enforcement. They even tried to set me up and plant false evidence in my home. I filed a request for an Internal Affairs Investigation and that seemed to enrage them even more. They are simply trying to destroy me by any means possible. I am in constant fear for my life. As Kevin Arial, a Face Book pseudonym and alias of a known local cop so eloquently posted to my Face Book page recently: “First rule of fight club is you do not talk about fight club, You should know this Mr. Lang! ; D”. They will still call and notify ICE that they arrested an illegal immigrant and that they are about to release them, they simply do so at an inconvenient time.In the case that the aresstee had a warrant however, sanctuary cities still comply with the law and have that person turned into immigration.Now in the cases that law enforcement comes into contact with someone who has committed a serious felony offense, such as rape, or murder, law enforcement even in sanctuary cities do usually turn that person into immigration. And further, those people usually already have warrants from ICE, given that they have committed a serious felony offense. Law enforcement does not want those people in their city anymore than ICE does. Immigration enforcement is not their job, or their role and now they are being asked to act in it anyways.Second, many police officers work in communities that are primarily Hispanic, meaning that they may serve communities that have illegal immigrants. When laws of this kind are created, it leads to the community fearing law enforcement and therefore makes the police’s job harder. People will refuse to report crimes to the police, if they have information on a case they will not come forward and it will generally lead to a great amount of distrust and fear regarding law enforcement. The police are now seen as terrorizing their community rather than protecting and serving it.This makes it difficult to impossible for the police to properly do their job. Victims will not come forward, witnesses will not come forward. No one will cooperate with the police during their investigations. The police generally do not want such a dysfunctional relationship with their own communities and are thus doing what they can to reassure members of their community that they are not there to terrorize their own residents, they are there to keep them safe.
