What do you do when your kid says you need to buy everything organic?

My little sister mentioned this to my parents at one point. Instead of proclaiming who the parent was and who was making money for the household, my parents did something a bit different. Mom did grocery runs roughly every other week. In the weeks in between she’d only grab simple things that she may have forgotten during her last trip. During one of these lesser trips she brought along my sister. Supplied with pen and paper, my mother instructed my sister to make a list of everything organic she figured me mother should buy for the household. In the meantime, my mother picked up items she, for one reason or another, didn’t pick up in the week prior. The two then found each other, hopped in the car and headed home. The entire ride home (according to mom), my sister began to spout off nutrition facts, prices, and coupons for organic foods and so on. Once the two of them arrived home, they say at the dining room table. My sister had her tablet with notes, my mother had previous receipts and an envelope with coupons. The two went back and forth, my sister stating her case as to why organic is better and that the slight increase in price was worth it. Mom mostly agreed and would show a similar non-organic item on her receipt that she’s buy. Nearly every item my sister mentioned nutritional value mom would show a similar non-organic item that was a bit less.At the end of this, they tallied up the items and discovered that my sister’s list of groceries was twice the price of mom’s usual spending. This is when mom moved the conversation over to the computer. She had two programs open, the first a browser showing the family’s bank account. The second was excel. Mom began showing my sister what the family earns bi-weekly. Now to a teenager it seemed like a lot. Hell, what I make today myself would seem like a fortune to a teenager. So upon seeing the family income, my sister went berzerk asking why we didn’t have a mansion and yadda yadda. This is when mom began opening a file in excel. This was the family’s financials. It must have dated back years, but was very simple and easy to read.In one column there was all money coming into the house. The second column showed monthly expenses and two sets of dates. The third column was mostly empty except for a few spots every so often. Mom began to explain it the spreadsheets. She explained that the first column was what her and dad brought in every two weeks from their paychecks. There was also an additional entry of where someone would do an odd job and receive additional pay.She then explained the second column how this was the bills and expected costs each month. Some of the items were approximations, others were absolute values. This column included the monthly budget for groceries. The items with a single date represented when bills had to be paid. Items with 2 dates represented the due date of the bill as well as a bonus or credit if the bill was paid by or before the second date or via auto-pay.The third column represented the family’s “fun” money. This was money they’d put away for vacations, weekend getaways, afterschool activities, clubs, and things of the sort. A bell went off in my sister’s head. She figured the family could cut back on the “fun” account and use that for organic food. This is when mom broke down the “fun” account. She pointed out various things like school field trips, shopping, and cheerleading, all of which were allocated to my sister. Confused, my sister asked where the funds allocated for me (her brother) were. That’s when mom responded, “your bother has a job. He reached the age where he takes care of things himself”. That’s when mom opened another excel sheet showing funds that I’ve allocated to the house out of my paycheck every 2 weeks. That’s when it sunk in. After seeing where money was spent each month, she quickly understood that sacrifices needed to be made to live comfortably. Comfortably did not include a diet full or organic foods. At best, this included canned or frozen produce mixed with the occasional fresh produce. After having this conversation, mom added a bit more fresh foods to her grocery list as a middle ground for my sister, but in terms of organic, we never really made the switch. This ultimately gave fuel to my sister’s fire to obtain a high paying job so she could live as healthy as she desires. What do you do when your kid says you need to buy everything organic? My parents turned my little sister into a knowledgeable adult.

What is your most embarrassing moment in the kitchen?

Impressing a guy with cooking skills didn’t work for me.So I met this guy online, and we were chatting for quite some time now. One day he says: “I would kill for a home-made soup right now”.As it turns out, he got drunk, tripped, broke his leg, and as every male - he is now dying from the “complications” (like when they have the flu, but much much worse). He repeated his craving for a home-made soup several times per day.So I make a mental note to myself: “The first time you enter his kitchen, you will make him a damn soup”. I had no idea how to make one (instant soup does not count, of course), so I am now set on a mission to learn to make a home-made soup.First stop - the grandmother. I postponed the call for a couple of days. First, because I was sure she was going to use some words I will not understand. Secondly, because the explanation is going to take several hours.During the call I made a grocery list with detailed instructions (two A4 sized papers with notes all over it).I go on and buy a chicken, carrots, the white carrots?, that green thingy, the pasta like thingy (is it obvious so far that my cooking skills are terrible? Because they are), condiments and some other stuff (I lost the papers, obviously). As I was a broke student, this was an expense I probably shouldn’t have had.I even went and bought a cute hello kitty apron. After several dates, he invites me over, and I am more than happy to show off that I can actually make a home-made soup.I announce that to him. Multiple times.I am super excited.I arrive at his apartment, put the bag with the apron and ingredients on the floor. He made an effort of preparing a big pot for the soup.I start pulling the stuff out of the bag. I take the A4 papers and strategically place them in the kitchen.I pull out the apron, put it on, then pull out carrots and the pasta like thingy…… and that was it.I forgot the rest of the ingredients in another bag at home.Edit (not to leave it with an abrupt ending):While panicking in the kitchen (no way I could have made a soup with carrots and the green thingy (btw, I think it was parsley)), I came up with three options:1. Run to the store - no money, which led me to2. Run home to get the rest - it would take me an hour and a half to get backThat left me with the option 3. There are no words to explain how embarrassed I was as I walked out of the kitchen five minutes later saying “Uhm, I am sort of afraid that we will have to eat something else today. I will make the soup some other time”.He was truly a gentleman and hadn’t laughed at my face while he called for some delivery. He admitted later that that was one of the top three hilarious moments.Three years later, I still haven’t made him a soup. He became best buddies with my grandma, though, so I am abusing the fact that she gets me off the hook every other weekend.

What’s the one thing you absolutely refuse to do with your spouse/partner?

Shopping. Not only clothes but any form of shopping including purchasing of groceries, furniture, and home decor. My husband is very fond of shopping. I still remember after our engagement, my father gave us his credit card and requested him to buy some clothes. As per customs, my parents were suppose to give clothes to their son-in-law during the wedding ceremonies. My husband took 3 hours to buy one shirt. That nightmare continues till date.In 2018, my husband cleared the bank promotion exam. For the interview, he wanted to buy a formal shirt and tie. The ordeal ended after 2.5 hours. I fail to understand why on earth he takes so much time to select clothes. As if this saga isn't enough, a grocery list and my husband are the perfect recipe for a disaster. The bigger the supermarket, the more this chap will jump around. It's like a picnic for him with a shopping cart following him. A trip to Dmart or Spencer's takes minimum of 2–3 hours. On the other hand, I finish all kinds of shopping in maximum 45 mins. Have absolutely no patience for shopping. To save myself from these trips, I do all my shopping on working days, unaccompanied by anyone.
