There are 7 temporary student visas and they’re labelled as subclasses.The 7 Subclasses are between 570 to 576 and are based on the education sector of your main course. There is also an 8th one but that is for a student guardian which subclass 580.The prescribed courses for each subclass are:Subclass 570 - Independent (ELICOS) English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas StudentsELICOS (non-award and Certificate I, II, III & IV) can be taken as a stand-alone course on its own if your English proficiency level isn’t great for you to apply and undertake other levels below.If you are taking the ELICOS as a prerequisite to another course then you need to rather apply for a visa under the subclass appropriate to the main course. (have a read of the below to see if that is the case)Subclass 571 – Schools - Primary school; secondary school including junior and senior secondary; approved secondary exchange programs (this covers years from kindergarten all the way through to year 12)Subclass 572 – (VET) Vocational education and training such as Certificate I, II, III, and IV and there are also the VET diploma and VET ADVANCED diplomasSubclass 573 – (HE) Higher education is for Bachelor degree; associate degree; graduate certificate; graduate diploma; HE diploma; HE advanced diploma; masters by courseworkSubclass 574 - Postgraduate research - Masters by research degree; Doctoral degreeSubclass 575 - Non-award - Enabling course; non-award foundation studies; other full-time courses or components of courses NOT leading to an Australian awardSubclass 576 - Foreign Affairs or Defence - Full-time courses of all types undertaken by Foreign Affairs or Defence students sponsored by the Australian GovernmentSubclass 580 - A further subclass of student visa, this Student Guardian visa, provides for certain persons to reside with a student in Australia, where that student requires a guardian.
