It depends on the context, but “ballet dancer” is the term that is used most often. Honestly, it just feels a little silly to say “I’m a ballerina,” but it has come up…When ballet dancers are talking to one another or someone they know well, they don’t really call themselves ballerinas, because it’s assumed. More specifically, you aren’t really a true ballerina unless you are a principal in a company, so most of us are just ballet dancers and refer to ourselves as such. When female ballet dancers are talking to non dancers, they sometimes (rarely) will say “I’m a ballerina” in order to clarify what type of dance they do. I cannot tell you how many times I have said to a guy, “I’m a dancer,” and he responds with, “what kind?” wink wink. So, when talking to people I don’t know, I usually say that I am a ballet dancer.
