What do the members of British Royal Family think of themselves?

This is what I wrote on British Monarchy: What does it feel like to be Her Majesty The Queen (Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second)?Obviously I can only guess since I'm not the Queen and I've never met her but I can speak as one of her subjects and have a stab at answering. It would be weird. Incredibly unbelievably strange.I can't think of anyone else who has undergone so much public scrutiny in their life on this earth. From the moment she was born she's been special in a way that few ever have. All eyes might be focused on Obama where he goes today but when he was a teenager he was just plain old Barrack. Elizabeth has been a future monarch from the moment she was born. She grew up more special than all the other kids in her class along with their parents and her teachers. Most kids live in awe of their headmaster but Elizabeth's headmaster lived in awe of her. She's always been the most famous person in every single room she's ever entered. At every function she's ever attended she's sat in the most prominent position and everyone has watched her every move. Whenever she attends a performance of any kind the rest of the audience have one eye on the stage and one on her to see what she thinks. This sort of scrutiny made her childhood incredibly strange but being a princess would have made life stranger still. Little girls today are told they can be whatever they like, but Elizabeth was told what she would have to do. Her entire future was mapped out for her with no real choice in the matter. She was told what she was going to be, how she was going to have to act and her every action was scrutinised by people who were grooming her to be a future monarch. Nobody in the world could understand what she was going through except her younger sister who you would think couldn't help but be jealous of Elizabeth's attention. She's also had to endure public attention in all forms of media in some incredibly intrusive ways. She's had people doing impressions of her for decades and saying some cruel and unpleasant things about her and members of her family. Frankie Boyle saying she was so old her pussy was haunted (his exact words) might have been the most public (and frequently repeated) joke of recent times but it wasn't the first and it won't be the last.Unlike previous monarchs she's had to endure genuine and concerted efforts to dismantle the structure she's inherited. Republican sentiment is no longer seen as treasonous and she's met with leaders who have actively attempted to remove her from their country's political life. For the last sixty years she's been living as a monarch and doing a monarch's duties. She's had to sit through countless tedious state dinners and receptions and meet with thousands of boring heads of state. She's had to endure ceremonies in her honour and hear a million long winded speeches about how wonderful she is and how great it is that she's come to visit. She's had to wander through thousands of new hospitals and schools and see the same things over and over again all the while feeling every eye on her and enduring camera flashes. If she's having a bad day she still has to dress up and smile at children handing her flowers. She did all of this in her young age, middle age and now into her eighties with retirement never being an option. A lot of what she's had to endure has in theory been in her honour but in reality been for the people participating and watching and not for her. She didn't want to see thousands of boats sail past but the country wanted it so she had to sit there and endure it. And a lot of this tedium has been located in far away places that she's had to travel a long way to visit despite having been many times before. While all this has been going on she has been living a life of affluence and privilege. She is incredibly and unbelievably wealthy by any measure or metric and has never wanted for anything in her life. She wakes to a breakfast table set to her exact specifications and leaves it without having to clean up a thing. She doesn't need to drive, clean, shop, or lift a finger in any kind of manual labour or housework. Her every wish and whim is catered to and and it's no exaggeration to say that whatever she wants she gets. She has none of the cares or stresses that any other woman has to deal with. She doesn't have to worry about bills or any financial matters. Things like a washing machine breaking down which disrupts the life of most people wouldn't even register as an event in her life as her servants scurry around getting it replaced immediately. She has several homes all of which are luxuriously appointed and is chauffeur driven between them. She has long summer holidays and regular days off to enjoy them. The Queen is also a mother and grandmother with a family that she presumably cares about deeply and are, if you'll pardon the expression, a group of total fuck ups. Her children haven't been very good at marriage and her grandchildren have made some extremely questionable decisions of late. Every grandparent is proud of their grand-kids and wants them to do well. It must be hard being in a situation where their failures are so prominent and dwelt on throughout the entire world. The children and grandchildren of a monarch can't really do all that much right. There's not a huge amount they can do that can win them the respect of the world, but every single mistake can be dwelt on and amplified (although dressing as a nazi and partying nude are pretty big mistakes in anyone's books). What is her life like? If I had to guess I'd say it's pretty hellish in public but pretty damn sweet in private. The official duties and the constant attention would become draining quickly and any novelty would have long worn off after a few years. You might start the job thinking "Fuck yeah, I'm the Queen!" but it wouldn't take long before the tedium and monotony would set in. But there's no doubt living a life of absolute luxury would compensate you for a lot of dullness. The one area that we will never know anything about is what her personal views on her subjects are. Does she feel genuine affection for the little girl handing her flowers or does she hate the working class and loathe being near them? Does she feel a sense of duty to her subjects in far flung places or does she hate foreigners? Does she tour working class areas and feel bad that the people she's meeting are paying money to sustain her lifestyle or does the thought not even enter her head? Does she feel genuinely moved by the plight of those she sees in hospitals or can she just fake a concerned look while thinking about her plans for the evening? We'll never know.

Incredibly unbelievably strange.I can't think of anyone else who has undergone so much public scrutiny in their life on this earth. All eyes might be focused on Obama where he goes today but when he was a teenager he was just plain old Barack. Elizabeth has been a future monarch from her early teens.
