They never conflict with our duties to God, family, nor country.The catechisms are simply memorization work that we keep and use to ensure that the Masonic tradition perseveres within our lodge, as well as to teach us certain principles to improve ourselves as men, husbands, sons, brothers, neighbors, and people in general. Some are just a few sentences long, and some can last up to fifteen minutes.The obligations and catechisms vary from grand lodge to grand lodge. For example, the wording may differ between my lodge here in St George, UT and the lodge in Las Vegas, NV (even though we’re only 2 hours/100 miles away from each other); however, the obligations will be exactly the same here in St George as they will be in Logan, UT (which is roughly 5.5 hours/380 miles away).The dramatized ritual which we use is kept secret largely for the purpose of preserving for our degree candidates the impacts of the moral lessons that they convey.So, you have now learned what our secrets are in general. You have also learned that the secrets within one Grand Lodge may slightly differ from the secrets of another grand lodge. If you wish to learn specifics, however, I highly recommend that you petition your nearest regular lodge (AF&AM, F&AM, or FAAM) for membership and learn the secrets of the grand lodge to which you would pertain.If the secrets of Masonry are so superficial, then what is the point in keeping them secret? This boils down to three principal points:If a man promises not to divulge such secrets and ends up divulging them, then he is not a man of his word and therefore does not merit the trust of his brethren. This is therefore a simple metric used to measure honesty for ourselves and each other.The practice traces back to the oaths that operative masons (in other words, masons who actually constructed edifices of stone) took to keep trade secrets from being stolen by other guilds. It is therefore a tradition commemorative of our Masonic heritage.Secrecy preserves the impact of the moral lessons that our ceremonies convey. There is no true difference at all. F&AM and AF&AM are merely parts of names of organizations. Styles.The Premier Grand Lodge, constituted in 1723, was styled “Free and Accepted Masons” (F&AM). A rival Grand Lodge emerged in 1751. (There was _no_ schism!) The rival GL styled itself “Ancients”, and called the Premier GL “Moderns” for allegedly having modernized some things.In 1813 the F&AM (“Moderns”) and the “Ancients” merged and the “Union” was styled:THE UNITED GRAND LODGE OF ANTIENT FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS OF ENGLAND.Some people in the US mistakenly talk as if the difference relates to the “Color Line”, or to “legitimacy”. It is true that all PHA Grand Lodges, having descended from the Grand Lodge of England (“Moderns”), are styled F&AM (except Liberia, which is AF&AM). But about half of the historically “white” US GLs are also styled F&AM, whereas about half are styled AF & AM, even though none of them descended from the UGLE.
