What happened to all the Nazis after Hitler died?

In the western zone, the Allies went through a process called Denazification. They had all the membership records of the Nazi party which included thousands of government officials at all levels. The major war criminals had, of course, all been arrested but that still left a lot of people connected to the party. It was decided that any ex-Nazi should be prohibited from holding public office or from holding an important civil service job but that posed a problem - just about all public office holders and civil servants were members of the party. Otherwise you lost your job. The job of the allies was to figure out who were serious Nazis and who were just hangers on. This was important because without a lot of those civil servants, many of whom served in technical roles, the allies couldn`t run Germany. It started with a questionnaire. If you were identified as a Nazi, you had to fill out a long form describing any role you had in the party. Now, here`s the trick. The Allies pretty much had all the information that was on the questionnaire. They just wanted to see what you would say. After you filled out the questionnaire, you would be questioned by a military officer. They would have a file in front of them containing all your records. You would be asked to explain any discrepancies between your questionnaire and your file.If you satisfied the officer that any discrepancies were minor or innocent, you were done. You were Denazified and you got back your civil rights. This was usually the case for career civil servants who had joined the party in 1933.However, others knew of the extent of their involvement. You would put on your questionnaire that you had signed up in 1935 after you graduated so you could work in government, then they would pull out your membership card showing you signed up in 1931 when you turned 18 (the minimum age). You would say you never went to meetings and then the officer would turn to minutes saying you were appointed local secretary. In a case like that, you would be sent to a tribunal to argue your case. This rarely went well because only hard-core Nazis generally went before the tribunal. These were generally party functionaries at local levels and people who signed up very early on.

What were you like in middle school?

In the 7th grade, my social studies teacher did an interesting social experiment; he had us fill out a questionnaire with information about ourselves.Questions included “What’s your name?”, “Where were you born?”, and “What’s your heritage?”However, there was one question that stood out from the rest. It confounded all the 7th grade students, nobody really knew how to answer it. The question was, “What are you?”After submitting our questionnaire, our social studies teacher made a power point of our answers. He told us, “I wanted to ask ‘What are you?’ to see how you all define yourselves.”The majority of the answers, people simply put down “a boy” or “a girl”. One person put down “a Christian”, defining themselves by their religion. Several others defined themselves by sports, like “a basketball player”.However, one answer was very different from the rest:“I am an ostridge.”That was my answer, original spelling included.
