I'm trying to decide on a book for classical mechanics. Which of the following should I choose? What are the pros and cons of each book?

It's somewhat silly to limit yourself to one text. I have all four of those as PDFs. If you are alright with searching on the internet a bit or torrenting, they aren't hard to find. (I think Morin himself posted his.)Both Goldstein and Taylor are excellent, but obviously Spivak offers a mathematician's point of view. I would recommend you choose one of Taylor or Goldstein, and use it along with Spivak as your primary material, as each of those covers more than Spivak, but Spivak offers a perspective which will be useful for a mathematics graduate student. Then, get electronic copies of the other two (Morin and either Goldstein or Taylor), and reference those periodically when you find your primary resources to be insufficient or unclear.I have the most experience with Goldstein, so I'd recommend that above all, I suppose, but I know many (especially older folk, it seems) prefer Taylor, and the few times I've used the other two, I have not been disappointed. (I also think Goldstein is better than Taylor if you have a decent background, which it seems you do.)Edit: I had a mistake before. When I said I felt Spivak covered less, I was thinking of his other text (Elementary Mechanics from a Mathematician's Point of View). Spivak's more comprehensive book, the one you mention, provides material similar to that of the other three in terms of breadth.I was on mobile before and wanted to write more, but could not do to my mobile editor being functionally unusable. So, I will throw in some additional remarks here. All of these books offer slightly different things. While most of the content is very similar, the presentation offer differs, and special topics are in each of the four. Goldstein has more chaos theory and perturbation theory than the others; Spivak discusses contraints and variational principles more, but assumes more mathematics, even differential geometry for parts; Morin spends the most time on introducing the basics of general relativity; Taylor discusses continuum mechanics in some detail.I would also add into the mix, in a spirit similar but even more mathematical than Spivak, the classic Mathematical Methods of Classical Mechanics by V.I. Arnold. This goes more in depth into differential forms and symplectic geometry, for instance, than Spivak. No matter what book you use, you should be fine. Just remember that you can use more than one resource, and also do not estimate the usefulness of online lecture notes, Q&A sites, et cetera in the process.

How best can I understand quantum physics for high school standards?

Understand everything that builds up to it.There’s no “magic button” to instantly start understanding quantum mechanics. If you jump into QM directly from, say, Newtonian physics, you’ll be quickly lost. Now, if you’re just interested in the basics of quantum mechanics, I’d say you should at least have reasonable comprehension of Maxwell’s laws of electromagnetism. You should also be learned in basic atomic theory - familiarity with the concept of orbitals is necessary in order to understand the photoelectric effect, which could be called the origin of quantum mechanics. On the math side, be very familiar with differential and vector calculus. Linear algebra is probably a good idea as well. If you aren’t intimately comfortable with complex numbers, learn them now - they’ve everywhere.Personally, I’m still in the process of learning this stuff. My primary resource is MIT OpenCourseWare, which provides free online college courses in all of these topics in more.Good luck!
