Hardik Patel is a convict, having been sentenced with 2 years’ imprisonment in a case of rioting, arson, damage to property and unlawful assembly.As per Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, a person convicted of any offence and sentenced to imprisonment for 2 years or more, is disqualified to contest election from the date of such conviction. Moreover, this disqualification continues for a further period of 6 years since his release.Due to this, Hardik Patel cannot contest election till this conviction is in operation.Now, under Section 389 of the Criminal Procedure Code, where a person has filed appeal against his conviction, there is (1) a provision for suspension of execution of sentence (which means he gets bail), and (2) a provision for suspension of the order appealed against (which basically means suspension of the conviction itself). These orders can be suspended till the appeal in the higher court is pending.In the case of Hardik Patel, he was convicted and sentenced in the above case on 25 July 2018. He filed appeal against it. The execution of his sentence was suspended on 18 August 2018, which means he got bail even after conviction.But, it appears that he did not file an application for suspension of his conviction, i.e., the second possibility under Section 389 Cr.P.C. Or, he did not press for arguments in that application, if he had filed it.He appears to have slept over this.Now that he suddenly decided to contest the Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket (probably from Jamnagar constituency in Gujarat), he woke up about 10 days back. He applied for suspension of his conviction before the Gujarat High Court, but last week, the High Court refused to suspend it.It is this order of the High Court against which Hardik Patel filed SLP in the Supreme Court.Now, usually, it takes a minimum of about 10 days in the Supreme Court to get the SLP listed before court for hearing after it is filed in the registry. Sometimes, it may take much longer too if there are defects in filing.For example, recently, I filed a case on 15 March in the Supreme Court and it will now be listed on 5 April before the judges for hearing (the court was closed for about 9 days during this period due to Holi).But, Hardik Patel filed the case just 2 days back in the Supreme Court, and wanted an urgent hearing. Of course, it is permissible to have an urgent hearing by mentioning before the Court, if there is some urgent reason.But, the Supreme Court declined to urgently hear the SLP of Hardik Patel on the ground that he had himself not done anything after 18 August and he suddenly woke up now.The Supreme Court is understood to have remarked:[1]“Your sentence was suspended in August 18. What were you doing since August last year? Why did you not challenge it then and now rush to the court? And now you suddenly wake up and want an urgent hearing. Sorry, if you can’t help yourself, we also cant help you.”So, it is not that the Supreme Court has refused to hear his SLP. It is only that an urgent hearing of SLP (by giving him priority over other SLPs) has been denied to him as he was himself responsible for delay.So, now, his SLP will come up for hearing in due course, which means a few days.But, the last date for filing nomination for election in Gujarat Lok Sabha seats is 4 April, 2019 (i.e., tomorrow).So, this means that if his matter is not heard by tomorrow and if stay of his conviction is not granted by the Supreme Court by tomorrow, then he cannot file the nomination form and he cannot contest elections. Moreover, he should get this order before the actual time of closing of nominations.So, it is not that he has been denied to contest the Lok Sabha election 2019. It is just that he is a convicted person under law and that he cannot contest election unless his conviction is stayed and that he has himself delayed seeking stay of conviction from the courts.By the way, it is not necessary that even if the Supreme Court grants him an early hearing, his conviction would be automatically stayed. It is a question that will have to be decided by the Supreme Court in the hearing on merits as to whether his case is a fit case in which his conviction deserves to be stayed. The Supreme Court can very well refuse to stay the conviction, as Gujarat High Court has done; and, in that situation, he cannot contest elections right now.Footnotes[1] Election setback for Hardik in top court

Here the vehicle is assembled in Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) which is fixed. After the assembly is complete the rocket is moved on the track to second launch pad (SLP) for launch.

Good question. The lion is too big for her to combat and could possibly kill her, it's not worth dying over cubs that she can reproduce again. Remember he's built to help take down large prey that lionesses can't bring down together, and can single handedly attack a pack of hyenas when lionesses can't .You may have read that the lion isn’t programmed to be a step father of his fleeing or dead rival’s cubs, and a lioness (his prize) will not mate with him while she still has her cubs, so killing them insures his chances of mating with her and getting his own offsprings. As a child I thought this was a lame thing for a mother or a lioness to do. I didn't consider the size factor of the lioness to the lion and how long this has gone on between lionesses and other female species facing the same predicament . Why couldn't she protect her cubs like sows do to the death? Size. Also comparing motherhood of a female bear and a lioness is an unfair comparison in my opinion.That said, I have seen a pride of lionesses actually successfully fight off (with the father of their cubs) an intruder lion. Therefore, if there are more lionesses (and lionesses work excellent together) then their cubs have a better chance of survival against rival male lions.
