It’s hard to go wrong at any of these institutions but there are differences.If UCLA sits in the middle of paradise, Yale sits in the middle of …. New Haven. Princeton and Stanford are suburban. This seems to make the non-academic life inward-looking. Princeton students seem to socialize with other Princeton students. Cambridge/Boston is the greatest “college town” on earth.These schools have different demographics. The daughter of a Chinese acquaintenace was concerned about the culture of the Eating Clubs at Princeton. In my opinion, her information was badly dated.Academically, a lot depends on a student’s major, intent on going to graduate school, and career choice. Some Wall Street banks are said to recruit only from Yale or from Princeton. Pre-meds at Harvard, Yale and Stanford seem to have a leg up at their respective medical schools. Nobody ever has to explain why Harvard was chosen. Nonetheless, about 45% of applicants accepted at both Harvard and Yale choose Yale. About 25% choose Princeton over Harvard. Y v. P. is nearly even.Distance influences West Coast v. East Coast. Many of us on the East coast cannot even imagine just how beautiful the West Coast can be!

Plenty of good reasons to turn down Yale. I’m a big proponent of saying that Yale isn’t for everyone. It shouldn’t be because if Yale adopts the mindset that it should be everyone’s #1 choice, it compromise it’s ability to be a good university for its current student body.When I was doing interviews in Silicon Valley we knew that we had a uphill battle since we were effectively poaching in Stanford’s backyard. Over on the East Coast, where students are regularly exposed to the variety of elite colleges, applicants understand that each of the Ivies have their own personality. However, in Silicon Valley, applicants are taught from an early age that there are basically two elite options, a big public university like Berkeley or small private university like Stanford. The Ivies are simply East Coast versions of Stanford and in their minds picking between Stanford vs. HYP was simply deciding if they wanted to leave the West Coast or not. Our role as interviewers was to describe how that’s not the case and that Yale isn’t the same as Harvard nor it is merely an East Coast version of Stanford.As emphasized in What are some of the worst things about Yale that they don't tell you on the tour? You have to really like Yale to like Yale. This is largely a self-solving problem but there are plenty of people who will get admitted but just can’t get themselves to do the whole “Yale Thing”.Basically, it’s not for everyone. Like, why the hell are they so into their whole residential college shit? Or how can anyone deal with New Haven and shitty New England weather? Seriously, why do those people wear blue sweaters all the time? Why don’t they stop on the whole liberal arts schtick? 2018 called, tech is here. Why do students regularly argue with professors and video tape themselves doing it? Why do their graduates travel overseas and get arrested by foreign governments? Why did they form not one but two committees to decide whether or not they should change the name of a residential college?I think the other big reason why people do turn down Yale is because they don’t like the pressure going to Yale brings. Yalies aren’t very cutthroat but they are very self-motivated and that creates a pressure where impostor syndrome goes to overdrive since everyone is hyper driven. Not everyone does well in that environment and fortunately some are strong enough to recognize that in themselves.
