Who does Walmart donate or to be more specific who does the Waltons donate to? There are several organizations that WM donates to and they all on different scales. When there is a disaster or major tragedy that is requested through the CEO, donations can also be requested from the retail side as well, these will include the WM Supercenters, WM Neighborhood Markets and also Sam's clubs, these divisions can also choose organizations to donate to as well as receiving donations requests. Then you also have EVAP and VAP (Volunteerism Always Pays) program where the employees can contribute. WM associates volunteers 25 hours or more of their time to an organization and once approved that organization would receive a $250 grant from WM with a max of $1k to an organization. I can't believe no one has pointed out this aspect:The end consumer of their donations is helped.Goodwill helps poor people find and afford necessities of life.I doubt donations that I make to Goodwill truly help pull their employees into worry-free living. I know they employ people who couldn't otherwise find a job, but I've seen the stores, and I frankly don't expect a chain that sells me shoes for $0.99 to be able to pay their employees - particularly part time ones - a real living wage.I doubt that Goodwill is driving through depressed neighborhoods distributing free toys at Christmas. Again, I don't consider that their primary mission!What I know is that Goodwill has helped me make an impact on people less fortunate than myself.You see, I'm a confirmed Goodwill shopper. You wouldn't guess it, just by looking. But that classy business outfit I love so dearly is a Goodwill find. So are most of my clothes. The first adorable plaid shirts people love seeing our toddlers in came from Goodwill. Baskets, winter coats, and a lot of shoes in this house come from Goodwill. I gifted lovely, new-in-box looking Pyrex with personalized etched names to a few girlfriends not too long ago; those expensive pie plates cost me about $2 at Goodwill and were as impeccable as the ones in Walmart. Oh, and our Christmas tree is a $500 tree I picked up in Goodwill for $40.Okay, so that helps us keep costs down. How does that help the poor?It's twofold:Goodwill enables me to give more.I have more to give, because I'm spending less! It's that simple.Do I donate the cash to Goodwill? Nope! I'm not a fan of going that route. Our cash giving is done via our local church. I trust them to wisely use it to meet needs. I also know there is no percentage cut getting taken out for administrative fees. Yes, some of my giving does indeed keep the lights on and buy Lysol for the bathrooms at church. But that's different from a portion of donations going to run large offices mailing out donation requests etc. - the administrative costs are for our actual church, and not directly related to managing my giving that gets passed on to those in need. That is handled by one guy in his little home office. No overhead there.Not only is my giving to the needy via our church greater because I'm saving money shopping at Goodwill, but I can afford to buy ingredients to send a homemade treat to the neighbors who are always worried about money. I can afford to donate clothes our sons don't need to the local center that aids single mothers. I have extra to share with those in need because I'm not going broke buying jeans at GAP.All that is reason number one. Ready for number two?Goodwill enables those who otherwise could not afford to clothe their family, furnish their home, or enjoy some extras, to do so without spending the incredibly high price for new items.In other words, Goodwill provides affordable options to poor people.I see the seasonal farm workers in Goodwill, loading up on jeans, tiny shoes for their children, and maybe even a special “new” purse for the wife back home.I see the tired looking mother back-to-school shopping at a fraction of the cost.I see the college students finding a winter coat.Goodwill helps tiny children stay warm. It helps harried mothers replace the dishes their drunk boyfriend threw. It helps worried fathers find a couch or a baby crib when otherwise they couldn't.That is how Goodwill helps the poor.What they do with their earnings back at corporate is their problem, and those who manage it will be accountable to God. But that's the “back end” of the story. The front and center conclusion is that Goodwill helps poor people find and afford necessities of life.
