What made your “jaw drop” during a job interview?“It’s not a big city like Rolla!”I was a senior in college, graduating in just a few months and looking for my first real job. It had been kind of frustrating, but I was trying. This company, they seemed to want what I had to offer, they didn’t have unrealistic requirements (why oh why would a company go to a college seeking applicants with work experience?) and the pay looked good.Overall the interview was going well. Problem was, this company’s campus was in Arkansas. And this was before Google maps, so I could only get a vague notion of where it was and what it was like. Hence, I asked about the town. I wanted to get a feel for what I was moving into.And the interviewer opened with “It’s not a big city like Rolla!”That, honestly, killed the interview. I suddenly didn’t want the job. You see, I’d grown up in a moderate-sized town in downstate Illinois. Then I went to school in Rolla, Missouri - a town of at the time something like 10,000 people. Sure, it’s the county seat and by local standards it’s “the city”, but by any reasonable standards it’s tiny. And here’s this guy who’s asserting that Rolla is a Big City. And he meant it. He was actually uncomfortable with how “urban” Rolla was. That was just utterly mindblowing to me, and I could not imagine it. That was not the life I wanted at all. We were from completely different worlds.Another one, from a phone interview:“Here at AT&T we believe in a ‘professional day’!”Now, this one was just baffling. I was interviewing for a job as a contractor - 1099 work, not W2 - doing tech support for AT&T business customers.I almost let that sentence slide - companies tend to develop all sorts of weird lingo that they forget is just gibberish to everyone else and it’s usually best to let it go and figure out from context later. But they said it like “professional day” meant something, so I asked.The interviewer explained that this meant I was expected to “be professional” and continue working on a problem until it was resolved, no matter how long it took. Which, okay, made sense: this was enterprise-class support, these were complicated issues and companies expected them to be resolved immediately.But then he continued to explain as how I’d be expected to clock out per normal regardless of how long the call went.So I asked for clarification. That if I was on the 8th hour of my shift - remember, this was 1099 hourly work, not salaried - and I got a call that took me four more hours, I was still supposed to clock out as if my shift was over per normal but keep working on the issue. That they did not believe in paying me overtime for hours worked? He affirmed that was exactly correct.I pointed out as how that seemed kinda… illegal? His answer was that if I was a professional and cared about the job that wouldn’t matter to me. I told him that was nice but I didn’t want a job like that.
