In this day and age, it would be rare for the healthcare provider to be intentionally sending erroneous bills. There are too many audit checks in place along the revenue cycle that catch billing errors along with the people who are making billing mistakes. The reasons are manyfold.Perhaps one of the most important is to avoid making fraudulent health claims. The claims processing computers are quick to find errors in claim forms. There is an atmosphere of zero tolerance in the US Dept. of Justice for fraud and abuse in healthcare. This position has been reinforced many times over with hospitals, doctors, other healthcare providers, etc. A failure not to utilize an error-free billing system or outfit is not acceptable.The Inspector General of DHHS, FBI and other law enforcement agencies police healthcare services. If an occasional out-of-compliance health claim can generate an audit of professional business practices, consider what happens to a provider that intentionally mis-bills in order to increase collections. If routine surveillance does not catch the problem, the patient certainly will report it.It is understandable, of course, for patients to think that there may be errors in the bills they receive. They are complex but the ordinary citizen does not have the tools to analyze the bill and determine its veracity. Auditors, regulators, law enforcement have the computer applications that can sift through patient statements, health claims, etc., and assign probability of fraud from their accumulated databases of utilization and provider profiles.Being penalized for improper medical billing has serious consequences that requires not only restitution but also carries serious financial penalties.
