PDF Editor FAQ

What happens if I have put down that I’m moving away from home in all my uni and loan applications but I don’t think I’m going to be moving any time soon?

The application is based upon current circumstances, not what might happen. There isn’t usually a question asking about where you might live in the future. The application asks for a current address. You can change your address when you actually move. The bank & school want to know where you reside now & are not interested in future plans. Moving will not affect your eligibility for a loan or admission to uni.

Dear non-Germans in Germany, why did you choose Germany over the US to get a job despite having a far lower salary and a much smaller house?

Let me give you a student perspective!! I'm doing my Ph.D. in Germany. If you asked me a couple of years ago, if I would be doing a Ph.D. outside India I would have said no. Most people at my Uni wanted to go to the USA but I never had an interest because of the large amount of money involved in writing GRE, TOEFL, and the application fees for the uni. The only way I could afford it was to get loans and take courses for these exams. Fortunately, I got an opportunity to do my master's thesis at an Uni in Germany through a scholarship program from DAAD (German academic exchange service). My mom did have to take a loan for the flight ticket but that was the best decision we made. Not only I was able to finish my thesis successfully but also apply for Ph.D. positions and have a direct interview with the professor. About 9 of us came to that particular uni through this scholarship and 7 of us are doing Ph.D./working in/around Germany. I probably do get paid less than my American counterparts but I can live comfortably without worrying about much emergency expenses. I do not need to own a car as I use my bicycle to go to the research center and use the public transport (buses/trains) for free within my state as I'm a student. The semester fee is only 300 Euros which mostly goes for the student tickets along with other contributions. I could also use all the facilities available at the uni like gyms. In short, I didn't really have any other options at that time, but if I'm given a choice now I would choose Germany in a heartbeat.

What is the amount of the average educational loan that an average Indian student needs to take to fully finance his studies in the USA, and how long does it usually take him to pay it back?

As an international student once in the US.I took a loan of amount 40 Lac from Credila who sponsored my whole 2 yrs fees for MS and also some of my initial spendings before moving to the US.I’ve been working for 4 yrs after college graduation in high pay and NO, I still haven't paid off all my loans. I have some savings that I’ll cash out later once it reaches its peak. Hopefully!!I’m lucky to get my work visa if not then hell NO I couldn’t be able to pay off my loan.On average US college fees for international students around more than $40k plus in a year ( in a good college with no scholarships) per I20 amount. You can convert that into Indian rupees. No, I don’t think many students can pay off their whole student loans in 2–3 years. That’s not true, maybe it was possible like 10–15 years back, but not now. Time has changed. You will have your own expenses to pay after whatever is left from tax deductions from your income like house rents, utility bills, credit bills, financing a car, insurance, groceries, weekends off, etc.Everything in the US is damn crazy expensive. especially big cities like New York, LA, Boston, Maimi, whole California, etc.Check out this tax deduction on income for few states. If your income is $75,000/yr.On average a young engineer in the US would earn around $60–$70k except for a few big leagues who pay more but of course, not everyone can get it.Here’s another for you, if going on a tinder date, this is what it would cost you.Well overall in a nutshell if you planning for covering your whole fees through loans, then I would say not worth it, very very risky investment for your future in America.Remember there are no green cards for Indians technically saying. Due to the backlogs and all other immigration headaches, hardly a few US companies are willing to hire Indians on visas.Yup, you saw that right a big league like TOYOTA, the USA rejecting job application because they don’t want to sponsor visas. And many other US companies ( like Cree Inc) are not providing US visa sponsorships options for international students to stay & work in the USA in the future. In Valeo, not even hiring F1 students also. And many more. For green card backlogs for Indians, do watch this video.Do read my other answer on another platform of Quora, for more insight.Kabir Snooka's answer to Is it ok to spend 1 crore rupees [~$140k] for doing a Masters in the USA?In conclusion, do extensive research for your future. DO NOT trust those educational consultancies who may put false info. in you to get a good paycheck from you.I live very close to MIT & Harvard and other colleges like Boston Uni., Tufts Uni. and I keep hearing many international students went back to their home country due to senseless visa complications along with their huge debts.
