PDF Editor FAQ

Are the Honda trucks worth it?

The Ridgeline, hmmm. If all you need is a SUV ride that will occasionally pull/haul a small load. Then yes. But if you want a truck to do major truck things like pulling over 5,000 ponds. Then no. It’s a great vehicle and a meh truck. Evaluate your needs and buy accordingly. If you can find a 2019 leftover they currently have 0.9% financing up to 72 months as of April 2020. But that expires soon. Good luck and hope you find your vehicle!

What are the practical applications of the traveling salesman problem?

Consider a delivery company, such as UPS. UPS has over 90,000 trucks. Each weekday, each truck starts at a depot, makes n stops, and returns to the depot. I don't know how large n would be for a typical truck, but I would guess probably somewhere between 20 and 50. Suppose that UPS could compute a matrix of costs to get the truck between every pair of the n stops. Then, given this matrix, UPS would like to solve the traveling-salesman problem for that truck, so that its route has the lowest overall cost.Even if UPS could compute the n x n matrix for free, brute force would not be feasible to solve the traveling-salesman problem. Suppose that the truck makes only 20 stops and that UPS could evaluate 1,000,000,000,000 possible orders per second. Then it would take about 28 days to try all 20! orders of the the 20 stops. And that's for just one truck out of the 90,000+. Even if UPS could make their routes just 1% more efficient, the overall savings would scale up significantly.

Do you have to be good at working with tools to be a truck driver?

Working with tools, no. Most trucking companies are a little sensitive about their drivers putting a wrench to their equipment.Fair ‘nuff by me. I get paid to drive ‘em, not fix ‘em.What they do want however, is someone with a basic knowledge of the workings of a semi. If you're broken down on the side of the road they would like a little more knowledge than “my truck died”. They want specifics and as many as possible. What preceeded it dying?Did it lose power, or just die?Any warning lights? Is it flashing any codes?Did you turn the key off, wait, and try to restart it?If you're broken down on the side of the road, they're going to send out a service truck. When my turbo launched, I told them, don't waste your time. It's going to need a tow. When a service truck is dispatched, it's not a parts store on wheels. They are going to load up with the tools and parts based on what your evaluation of the situation is. “Truck died” ain't gonna cut it. There's nothing worse than being stuck on the side of the road for hours and having the service truck show up with the wrong parts. That's not going to make anybody's day brighter.
