How long does it take to walk into a gun store and come out with a semi-automatic, if I have a clean record in America?From my own personal experience, it takes about an hour on average. I can walk into my local Cabela's, Sportsman's Warehouse, or any other local gun shop right now and leave with any semi-automatic firearm in their stock, today… provided I have the funds to pay for it, of course. Rifle, shotgun, handgun… doesn't matter. As long as it's not an automatic machine gun or some other kind of NFA-regulated firearm, I can go shopping in the morning and be on the range shooting before lunch.“But wait a minute!” I hear you say. “I thought there was a waiting period to buy a gun!”Well, there is, for handguns. But I'm special. I don't have to wait to buy a handgun (just like you don't have to wait to buy a long gun like a rifle or shotgun).You see, I'm a concealed carry licensee (Here in Washington State, our carry permit is called a Concealed Pistol License, or “CPL”. Ownership and open carry are legal without licensure.) and have already undergone a rather extensive FBI background check, plus voluntarily submitted my fingerprints to both them and my local police department before waiting approximately 20 days to actually receive my license card in the mail. I have to renew this through my local PD every five years.Now, don't confuse Brady Bill waiting periods with NICS background checks. The only thing my CPL allows me to do other than carry a concealed loaded handgun is avoid the otherwise-mandatory waiting period involved in purchasing a handgun in my state. I still have to fill out a copy of form 4473 and undergo a NICS background check every time I want to buy something to add to my collection — the only difference is I can leave with it that same day, regardless of what it is, rather than having to come back and pick it up some time during the next week or four (in the case I didn't possess a license). If I were to ever do something to get myself barred from owning a firearm (like becoming a felon), my CPL would be revoked and NICS would then still come back with a “do not proceed” just like in the case of any other felon and I wouldn't be able to complete the purchase.What's the quickest I've ever been able to complete a semi-automatic firearm purchase transaction? About 25 minutes from walking in the door to paying the cashier and leaving. Granted, I knew what I wanted and that it was in stock, and I went in during a time of day when the store was extra slow for business. I just walked in, told the clerk what I wanted, he pulled it from the back, we did the paperwork and off I went with my brand new Marlin Model 60 semi-auto 14-shot .22lr. Smooth as butter? Absolutely. Typical? Ehh… maybe, maybe not.[Edit to add photo: My actual Marlin 60, Credit: me. BTW, WA state is currently considering a legislation which would classify this wimpy little thing as a “high-capacity assault rifle” simply because it's semi-auto and holds more than 10 rounds.]So, how long would it take for you to walk into a gun store and come out with a semi-automatic firearm in the USA? Well, that depends. It can depend on your individual state laws, whether you're trying to purchase a long gun or a handgun, and whether or not you're licensed to carry. Ballpark estimate? Anywhere from a few measly minutes all the way up to a week or even more.
