Something is happening in the world.Earlier in the week, Hilary Clinton was sworn into office.In her inaugural address, she formally declares war on the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. In a brilliant stroke of tactical entrepreneurialism, President Clinton reveals three new weapon systems. The first are a pack of cloned velociraptors with chameleon-like adaptive camouflage offered by the InGen corporation's Security Division. The second are new creatures which gestate inside the human body and bleed acid, found in Antarctica by Weyland Industries. Between these two, ISIL will be safe in neither cities or the open country. The final system deployed against ISIL will be a new breed of drones programmed with artificial intelligence, created by Cyberdyne Systems. These drones will be coordinated by Skynet, an artificial intelligence based in the Cheyenne Mountain complex.But little did Clinton know that ISIL had just sent refugees over from Europe packed in a private jet... refugees infected by a variant of the Ebola virus procured from the Cambridge Primate Research Centre. The flight is intercepted by USAF F15 Eagles and forced to land at LaGuardia airport, but the damage is already done. Infected refugees pour out of the grounded aircraft, sprinting towards airport personnel on the tarmac and biting them. In seconds, the infected workers turn on their fellow man and within hours Queens has been overrun.The US Army masses in Yonkers to save New York City from the mindless infectious cannibals. But before the two forces clash the Russian military launches a nuclear strike on the United States, wiping out New York. Manhattan is destabilized and earthquakes cause the island to sink. Chicago is neutron bombed to preserve the infrastructure so the Russians can set up a central base of operations for the country. Meanwhile the North Koreans invade the Pacific Northwest while the Cubans press in on the South. Both parties meet stiff resistance from irregular militias and the rallying cry "Wolverines!" is born.Meanwhile the Chinese have landed an invasion force in Washington using the Potomac and go unnoticed because everyone ignores CNN reports of US Coastguard radio chatter indicating exchanges of gunfire. CNN reported the same thing back on September 11th, 2009 and were wrong about it. The nation's capitol falls in the first day. The Chinese make camp to resume their campaign in the morning.But little did the Chinese know, a parasitic, shape-shifting extraterrestrial life form had hitched a ride back from Antarctica by imitating Weyland Industries executives. These executives attended the Presidential Inauguration, remained in Washington overnight and were captured by the invading force. Chaos ensues in the Chinese camp as soldiers mutate and kill their comrades. A massive firefight breaks out and the surviving paranoid soldiers break camp, unsure of who to trust.Orbiting above the planet, a race of alien hunters watch the fray inside a cloaked spacecraft. Sitting up a throne of swords, their leader orders several young, untested hunters to descend upon the planet and locate and neutralize both of the bioweapons found in Antarctica.Back on Earth, the bioweapons Weyland Industries did know about are released upon Chicago in the military's confused response to so many invading forces. The nightmarish creatures creep up on Russian forces occupying the city and a battle ensues. The creatures retreat, but capture hundreds of wounded Russians. A few hours later the Russians regroup and recover their comrades... who are apparently alive and well. Since the threat appears to be over, that night the reunited soldiers pull out the vodka and see who can hold their liquor the longest. Little do they know, sentries guarding the compound are silently slain as if by invisible assassins. The alien hunters enter the Russian compound, planting explosives as they go, then exfiltrate undetected. Come morning, the recovered Russian soldiers awaken from their drunken slumber to excruciating pain. Snakelike larval versions of the creatures which captured the soldiers burst out from their ribcages, killing the men. The unaffected Russians look on in horror, hoping everything is a bad dream. Before the survivors can process what is happening though, the whole city of Chicago lights up in a massive nuclear blast.Combined with earlier Russian nuclear strikes, this tips the world's climate into a new ice age. Tornados rage through Los Angeles and mega-tsunamis impact many cities along the coasts. The Cuban occupation forces are utterly wiped out.Later that day in Cheyenne Mountain, Skynet comes online...Then Hillary Clinton walks calmly into the Oval office, apparently unfazed by the events of the last few days. Cue Hillary turning towards the camera.It's 3 am and your children are safe and asleep. But there's a phone in the White House and it's ringing. Something is happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call. Whether it's somebody Genre Savvy enough to avoid cataclysmic mistakes. Somebody who doesn't reap money from speeches to powerful corporations in a robotic manner for unknown purposes. It's 3am and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?TL;DR: Of course it won't be the end of the USA if Hillary wins. Life will go on and very little will change in the United States. Maybe there will be another ammo shortage, but that's about it. Now what happened to those chameleon velociraptors...

Quite a lot is geographical: In Australia we have a landmass about the size of the USA’s 48 contiguous states, with 25 million citizens. That means we are quite spread out and except for Sydney and Melbourne we have few unavoidable crowded situations. We also have all water borders so it’s harder to sneak in, especially with large hungry crocodiles on sentry duty in the north.Canberra, the national capital and biggest city near where we live, has a population of 440,000 but is the hub for about twice that number. In Canberra the total of cases stands at 103, of which about 70 have recovered, been tested and found to be negative; three (all senior citizens) have died - all were passengers on the “plague ship” Ruby Princess; last week when I checked 13 were in hospital. Three of those were in intensive care but all appear to have made it. Given that there are three large, sophisticated hospitals in Canberra (Royal Canberra Hospital, Calvary and the University of Canberra Teaching Hospital) plus two large private hospitals, the 13 patients would not have disturbed the tempo at all. There have been NO new cases in Canberra for seven days.Unexpectedly to me at least, our Governments at all levels and on both sides, left and right, have acted with decisiveness, cooperation and thoughtfulness.Example: Three more passengers from the Ruby Princess started a panic in Tasmania, causing 47 infections among hospital staff in Burnie. The response was:Day 1 - the Tasmanian Government contacted the Commonwealth Government, quarantined a total of 5,000 people (the 47 affected. their contacts, families and colleagues) and arranged for the deep cleaning of the whole hospital, both private and public sections.Day 2 - while the cleaning continued, two Royal Australian Air Force Hercules arrived in Tasmania, crammed with military doctors, nurses, pathologists and supplies.Day 3 - after tests were conducted to make sure the cleaning had been effective, the military took over the hospital. In the five days following there have been NO new cases. Well done our Governments! A majority of the medical staff have served in the middle east and are not easily panicked.When the panic first started our Prime Minister formed a “National Cabinet” of himself and his relevant Ministers for Health, Finance etc, the seven state Premiers, the Chief Ministers of the two Territories and a number of business representatives. They hold video meetings regularly each week and additional ones as required. In that way a fast, coordinated response is achieved to anything. They are in regular and productive contact with NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, arranging things like evacuation of Australian and NZ citizens from foreign countries, They fly them to Australia and then a smaller plane takes the Kiwis home.Also worthy of note is the quarantine arrangement: hotels are empty, so they are being used for compulsory quarantine of anyone coming in from overseas. They must stay in their rooms for fourteen days, but are staying in five star and having three meals a day delivered. All this is at NO cost to the people quarantined. One idiot broke quarantine, sneaked out of the hotel by breaking a door, and caught a bus to visit his girlfriend. He was fined $5,000 and jailed for a month.Our politicians are acting like adults and leaving politics out of the mix; the leader of the opposition, Anthony Albanese, agreed to pass the first stimulus package by merely commenting “it’s good legislation” - NO point scoring! It was passed in a couple of hours. Compare that with the USA where it took five days!Our public servants reacted fast too. My husband works in Government IT and has worked from home for the last four weeks, as have many of his colleagues. The high rise petri dishes sit empty.My grand daughter is a serious athsmatic, a fourteen year old at high school. In mid to late March her teachers told her “here is your Chromebook, continue your schooling from home”. The Chromebook is owned by the Education Department and there is one for every child in every school. They were available by early March. She is in daily contact with her teachers and has adapted well. They hold class meetings via Facetime.It’s no one cause that has helped, it’s all these little things added up. A combination of adult attitudes, lack of petty politics and point scoring, citizen cooperation, a tech savvy population and good old common sense!

I find Dota2 to be the most complex game that is out there due to a lot of complexity dimensions that intersect in its gameplay.The premise is rather simple - there is a square map with two bases in opposite corners, two teams of 5 players each compete, each player controls his own hero (chosen before the start of the game) and the objective is to destroy the base of the opposing team.First there is the complexity of heroes. There are 111 total heroes in the game. All of them have 4–6 abilities. No two abilities are exactly the same (some are similar). Each hero scales differently as they gain experience and levels in the game. Each hero also has an ultimate ability that can radically change the heroes utility in the game and a talent tree that can give heroes very different development options. As each of 10 players must pick his own hero (you can not pick the same hero as another player in the game) and hero abilities can complement or counter each other, the number of possible hero combinations in a game is mind blowingly huge. Suffice to say that millions of people who play Dota2 (and Dota1 before that) for decades have not played even a small fraction of the possible combinations. And heroes are really, really different, even heroes in the same exact role combination will have different synergies and counters with other heroes and different item build options.That brings us to items. With gold earned during the game each player can equip his hero with 6–9 (or more) items from over 100 different choices. Cheaper items often combine or upgrade to form more powerful items. Some items just improve the hero, while others improve all heroes around you and others even give your hero more active abilities to use. Some items can be essential to fully unlock a potential of a hero or to lock a particular enemy hero down and counteract their abilities. So while there are some recommended item builds (note the plural) for every of the 100+ heroes, even that is just a start, because the composition of your and your enemies team will influence what items you will want. And then they get some items that you also need to react to and buy other items in response.Terrain brings the third layer of complexity into the game. Between the bases there four layers of static defences (towers) situated along three approach routes (lanes). Every minute computer controlled minions (creeps) spawn in each lane and run to attack the enemy base. Mostly they get killed by enemy creeps or towers. However heroes actually should be there to get killing blows on enemy creeps, because that will give you gold to buy more items faster. While also taking care not to be too far forward as not to get jumped by enemy heroes to get a killing blow on you. To help both attack and escape there are tree lines along the lanes with many small paths where attackers can hide in waiting or where you can try to escape pursuit of a failed assassination attempt. If you find that you lane is too dangerous to be in, you can try to get experience and gold by killing neutral creeps living in camps in the jungle between the lanes, but even there you will not be 100% safe from enemy heroes. Then the vision games start - there are items that are called wards, invisible watchers that you can place on ground or on a cliff edge to give your team vision around them. But they (and invisible heroes) can be countered by guessing where the ward is and placing another item - a sentry nearby, that will reveal all invisible units (including wards).Strategic complexity starts to form from there - where is your vision, where do you think that enemy vision is, where are the enemy heroes and what are they going to do now. Is it safe to stay alone in this lane and get some money or do you need to group with your team mates and prepare for a team fight, is that guy over there alone or is his whole team hiding in the forest behind them. A team with less gold can strategically outplay a richer team by avoiding team fights, picking off single heroes and pushing to destroy enemy defencive structures on the other side of the map.And it is not over until it is over. In Dota2 every game can easily turn on a few bad plays. When a team is behind and miraculously still manages to win a team fight, they get larger kill rewards for it that allow them to complete some new items and have better chance of winning the next fight, so comebacks and turnarounds are quite possible. They don’t happen all the time, but still the chance is there so the loosing side has the motivation to keep fighting. Sometimes just one play, just one ability out of thousands used just at the right time and place can be HUGE. This brings us to “s4 million dollar Dream Coil”.Dota2 is so big and complex that it has the e-sports championships with the largest prices ever. Last annual Dota2 event was TI6 with the price pool of 20 *million* USD. The winning team took home over 9 million USD (shared across the 5 players). In 2013 the TI3 prize pool was 2.8 million USD. The first prize was 1.4 million and the second prize was 0.6 million. So that last game - the grand finals game itself was basically a game to decide the faith of over 800 000 USD (or rounding up for hype - A MILLION DOLLARS (almost)). The grand finals was a best of 5 game between Alliance and NaVi and after tense and tight games it came down to the last, fifth game. Teams have been trading blows for a long and have gotten to the stage where heroes are so strong that they can destroy enemy base in a direct assault unless there are enemy heroes to stop them. NaVi are attacking the Alliance base, while Alliance does a wrap-around and attack the NaVi base. It turns out that Alliance can kill base buildings faster. NaVi decide to retreat and defend, they turn to run and then start using their teleportation scroll items to return to base. But at that moment Alliance player s4, who was playing Puck, jumps into the middle of retreating NaVi heroes and uses Dream Coil. This ability cancels the teleports (this also destroys the scroll being used and puts any other scrolls on 30 second cooldown) and keeps them in the area for 5 seconds. And that was enough extra time to do catastrophic damage to NaVi base that they could not recover from and when a short time later s4 used another Dream Coil to cancel another teleportation back to base it was all over - Alliance won T3 and that was the “Million dollar Dream Coil”.That story has it all - hero selection, skill selection, item usage nuances, strategy of avoiding a stronger opponent, tactics of self-sacrifice, huge stakes and nuances of terrain.Edit: Also forgot to add, that the game changes. All the time developers track the games and feedback and some heroes and items get periodic buffs or nerfs or fixes. Every ~3–4 months there is a large re-balancing patch that often significantly alters payers perception what heroes and their combinations are stronger than others. Everything is so close that almost every hero is viable, even in professional games, in TI6 only 5 heroes were not picked in games. Sometimes a tiny nerf is enough to downgrade a hero from “must pick every game” to “once every 4–5 games, maybe”. Players innovate new playstyles, new item and hero combinations all the time and with these innovations the meta-game (understanding of what heroes to pick in what combinations against others) also changes all the time. Every month Dota2 is a different game from what it was a month ago. And that is how it has kept alive for over 13 years now.
