Krav Maga is specifically designed to prepare people for defending themselves in real world situations and in as an excellent way of learning how to defend oneself in a real world situation.The core principles of Krav Maga are:Address the dangerImmediately counter attackGet home safelyThe curriculum is designed to address statistically common attacks first (simple chokes, big & simple punches) and covers more and more sophisticated and dangerous scenarios as one progresses (e.g. knives, followed by guns) to things that are most likely only applicable in extreme situations (long gun defense, car jacking defense). Many schools will choose to at least introduce some more advanced techniques earlier since one cannot choose when one is attacked. While some other martial arts cover knife work very few others (e.g. Systema) cover gun and other modern weapon defense.Krav Maga techniques are designed to be as simple to learn and execute as possible and are generally based on instinctual reactions that are made more effective through training (e.g. plucking a choke, a more effective version of the instinctive grabbing and pulling). Because of this it is much easier to learn quickly and effectively than more complex techniques. A lot of emphasis is placed on repetition and most of the basic components (punches, kicks, punch and kick defenses) will be drilled over and over to ensure that they are performed automatically. The curriculum for upper levels is definitely not tiny but it is intentionally kept as small as possible to maximize the competence with which everything can be performed.
