PDF Editor FAQ

Is it mainly hate for Obama that is causing the possible demise and self destructive behavior of the Republican Party?

Obama hate is at best a symptom. The truth is far more insidious. The gutting of the party began in the mind of Jerry Falwell, a fire and brimstone TV evangelist, many decades ago. Falwell had a talent for making hate look like a good thing. His enmity knew few bounds and included homosexuality, feminism, the ACLU, and he once explained that the Anti-Christ will be Jewish. The Republicans answered the call when Jerry Falwell decided he needed his own political party. He succeeded in seducing them to the dark side and now the zealots are in control. They have run the Republican ship aground.Barry Goldwater saw this coming more than forty years ago:"The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both."I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,''C' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.' "--Speech in the US Senate (16 September 1981)"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."--Said in November 1994, as quoted in John Dean, Conservatives Without Conscience (2006)"Do not associate my name with anything you do. You are extremists, and you've hurt the Republican party much more than the Democrats have.""Everyone knows that gays have served honorably in the military since at least the time of Julius Caesar.” He also said, "You don't need to be 'straight' to fight and die for your country. You just need to shoot straight."Said to Dole: "We're the new liberals of the Republican party. Can you imagine that?"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_GoldwaterWhat follows is frightening:The rich Republicans of San Antonio's Bexar County consider themselves very conservative. And they are. But the politics of this new crowd gave them a bad scare. Not long after the Christian rightists staged their coup, the president of the Alamo City Republican Women's club just gave up and quit."The so-called Christian activists have finally gained control," she explained in her resignation letter, "and the Grand Old Party is more religious cult than political organization.Next came the Pennsylvania primary ... the shock came the next day, when the votes for obscure Republican state committee positions were tallied. From nowhere, conservative Christians had grabbed dozens of seats. The militant newcomers are now close to controlling the Republican Party in Pennsylvania, too.In June, in the San Diego County towns of Lemon Grove and El Cajon, a slate of "pro-family" Christian right activists financed by a group of conservative businessmen swept the Republican primary for all of the open council seats, along with a slew of state assembly seats. On the same day, several hundred miles to the north in Santa Clara Country, another slate of "biblically oriented" candidates--committed to the death penalty for such sins as homosexuality and abortion--captured 14 of 20 seats on the Republican county central committee. The GOP apparatus in the nation's most populous state is within a few votes of being absolutely controlled by the Christian right.Across the nation, in primary after primary, stunned Republican leaders echoed the lament of one longtime party activist in Texas, a personal friend of Barbara Bush, who suddenly found herself ousted by the fundamentalists. "They organized and we didn't," she said. "I didn't think it was going to be this bad.................................................................................................................................Until last spring, Jo Martin was a relatively nonpolitical Houston housewife. Today she's on the front lines of a religious war that has fractured the Republican Party. Martin, a 52-year-old mother of three, and her husband David, a stockbroker, are lifelong Republicans but hadn't been active in party politics for many years until they happened to attend a local GOP meeting last spring. They were appalled by what they found. The party apparatus had been taken over by religious activists intent on bringing "biblical principles" to government: outlawing abortion, ostracizing homosexuals and teaching creationism in public schools, among other things. "We honest to goodness felt like we had fallen through a time warp into a Nazi brown-shirt meeting," Martin said.................................................................................................................................In March, 1986, I (Joan Bokaer) was on a speaking tour in Iowa and received a copy of the following memo Robertson had distributed to the Iowa Republican County Caucus [Robertson is a Falwell familiar]:"How to Participate in a Political PartyRule the world for God.Give the impression that you are there to work for the party, not push an ideology.Hide your strength.Don't flaunt your Christianity.Christians need to take leadership positions. Party officers control political parties and so it is very important that mature Christians have a majority of leadership positions whenever possible, God willing."As can be seen from the documentation on this page, one of their tactics was to tie up the meetings for hours until people left. Then they appointed themselves leaders and made key decisions. Once they took over the local leadership throughout the State of Iowa, they could control the state party apparatus. After their success in the Iowa '88 primary, they used the same tactic in several other states -- precinct by precinct.Republican State Party Platforms began to get pretty interesting in 1992. The Republican Party of Washington State in 1992 outlawed witchcraft and yoga classes.Taking Over the Republican PartyWho is Jerry Falwell:In 1984... Jerry Sloan claimed that during a televised debate in Sacramento, CA, Falwell had called the gay-positive Metropolitan Community Churches:"brute beasts...[and] a vile and Satanic system [that will] one day be utterly annihilated and there will be a celebration in heaven."He denied saying this and offered to pay $5,000 if Sloan could produce a tape of the statement. According to an article in Church and State magazine,"Sloan did so, Falwell refused to pay and Sloan successfully sued. Falwell appealed, with his attorney charging that the Jewish judge in the case was prejudiced. He lost again and was forced to pay an additional $2,875 in sanctions and court fees."Controversial comments by Jerry Falwell

Why do some people believe that drug addiction is a choice, rather than a brain disorder?

Some people believe that since all substances labeled as addictive and that it is a choice to use it or not use it. thus, the outcome wouldn’t be a medical condition it would be an after effect of using the substance, the same as after effects from OTC and prescription drugs aren’t labeled a disease, they are called after effects—too bad, so sad. Take this drug to counteract the first drug and, then, take this drug to counteract the 2nd….and so on.To the best of my knowledge the AMA/APA decided to label addiction as a disease in the mid-70’s. If anyone knows the exact date I would appreciate knowing. I was on a Santa Clara County (CA) Mental Health Association panel April 1975 comprised of mental health professionals and lay-persons. I was the only one who believed labeling any mental/emotional or physical symptom a disease would result in a Pharmaceutical/Western Medicine revolving door sickness care. And I am saddened to know that is exactly what has transpired. One could say it was a prophetic statement, as much of my career and life has been. The World Health Organization (WHO), 2014, revealed their research of 100 countries for health care efficiency and effectiveness—the U.S. ranked 37th.
