PDF Editor FAQ

Why should you, or shouldn’t you, major in accounting?

I was majoring accounting.Tbh i learned accounting since junior high school, it was a class called “tata buku (general ledger)” but all i get from that class was how to record general ledger and how to recognize revenues and expenses. then after finished junior high scholl, i followed my best friend and applied to vocational high school which subject is accounting. I didn’t really know what accounting was, just followed the flow. at first, i saw it was boring, teachers teached me to made journal, posted it to general ledger, worked with worksheet and provided accounting report. at my senior class (2007), teachers introduced me to MYOB Accounting. i found it very useful, and i thought that what i learned since junior was kinda a “waste” since we just need input to transaction into MYOB system and “boom”, system would automatically made general ledger and thousand kinds of reports. After finished my vocational high school, i worked in tax consultant company (i didn’t take any class in university yet). in my first year of work i found out that accounting was more than making accounting report, even when computer can made perfect report, we still need human to analyze the report. And also, not everyone can use Accounting System easily, only those who have strong logic would be able to read the report. And yeah, after working for one year, i choose to took accounting as my major in one of university here. i love worksheet, i love to work with microsoft excel, i love to analyze data, i love to make comparison report, that’s why i chose accounting as my major.Sometime i was really bored, and wish i took another major instead of accounting, but in my normal day, i woke up and been so happy working in my desk, making costumer’s card report, analyze their payment trend, and propose reconciliation worksheet when needed. It was about your heart, if you can spend 5 hours working on accounting cycle, post journal, worksheet and propose accounting report.. if you can spend 5 hours to work with a data, to calculate tax, to calculate business performance according to monthly profit/loss report… if you can stand 5 hours to check wheter all cost already posted to correct CoA, then.. you are more than welcome to choose Accounting… but if you can’t stand with number then you have one good reason to say good bye.

Should I learn VBA coding to differentiate myself from other graduates who would like to become finance analysts?

VBA coding won’t help you get a job unless it has already been recognized as a job requirement. But it can definitely help you become recognized as the star employee when you automate a routine task that had previously taken hours when done by a clerk or junior finance analyst. You should also remember that knowing how to solve a problem using worksheet formulas, PivotTables and other worksheet user interface methods will help you write much better VBA code. The VB jock from the IT Department can probably code rings around you, but his code will be slow compared to yours if you know Excel better than he does.To illustrate my points, a junior financial analyst posted a couple of questions on a help forum back in 2008. He worked for one of the largest Wall Street brokerages (a name anybody would recognize), and was responsible for reconciling foreign exchange trades. Done manually, it took a solid afternoon to reconcile a week’s worth of trades. He tried to code the manual process in VBA, and found the resulting 20 MB workbook needed four minutes for each recalculation—and there were a number of manual processing steps as well. I suggested using a SUMPRODUCT formula in the VBA code, and the workbook recalced in a few seconds for each scenario. The discussion continued in a second question, where I talked the Asker into using a PivotTable. The resulting process could now be handed off to a secretary, as it took an 800KB workbook 4 seconds to calculate—a reduction of 96% in size and 6000% improvement in speed. Needless to say, the boss was quite impressed when he was shown the new reconciliation tool. The person I was helping in that thread became “the man” to automate stuff with VBA in his department. He survived the fierce downsizing in the 2008–2010 financial meltdown, and made his VBA expertise a career-altering ability.Other people have encouraged you to learn Python and R instead of VBA. At present, neither Python nor R are supported in Excel, but Microsoft is aware of their importance in statistical analysis of data. Since Microsoft is investing heavily in Business Intelligence features, Excel’s competitive position with respect to other tools for statistical analysis of big data will likely change in upcoming years.

Do you keep a catalog of all of the books you've ever read? If so, what type of system do you use for cataloging and is it digital or handwritten?

I spend all day, every day, buried in spreadsheets, reconciliations, and pivot tables.I’ll keep logs if someone is reimbursing me for my work. I occasionally put together budgets/expense reports, and create itemized invoices for friends to use…because I’m helpful and can put them together quickly. I’ll also do a quick and dirty worksheet to figure something out. I’m very used to sorting, processing, and charting information in little boxes.I don’t unnecessarily catalogue anything in my personal life. I keep it simple - like a barefoot shoemaker. I don’t see the point of keeping records of my leisure activities. I don’t even alphabetize my books.I have an excellent memory; I can count the times on one hand when I’ve picked up a book and forgotten I’d already read it.
