Excellent question… Very pertinent, keeping in mind the many recent reports of fake “doctors” who cause more damage to the patients than the disease itself.My answer will be relevant only for doctors who practice modern, evidence based medicine(loosely known as allopathy in India), and not the hocum of various alternative therapies-homeopathy, unani, naturopathy and whatnot. There is absolutely no evidence that those work, and I have seen many cases where the side effects have been devastating.Now here are some pointers which would help you in telling a fake ‘doctor’ from a real one.Registration:A practitioner of modern medicine in India would first and foremost be registered with either Medical Council of India, or one of the state regulatory bodies (Delhi Medical Council, Punjab Medical Council…etc). The registration number of one of these HAS to be there on the prescription letterhead or the stamp of the doctor. The consultation chamber would have a copy of the registration displayed.Degrees:MBBS- if you see this on the board, you know this person has atleast the basic qualification of a real doctor. It may be followed by various degrees and affiliations.MD/MS/DNB- Postgraduate degree. This signifies specialization in a particular field. Both degrees are valid, and equivalent, just provided by different governing bodies.*MD is also a postgraduate degree in ayurveda, but it is usually preceeded by a “BAMS” instead of the “MBBS”. Still, when in doubt, confirm.DM/MCh - These are degrees of superspecialty. Equivalent of a doctorate.DCh, DMRD, DVD, DA, DTCD- various diplomas- postgraduate degrees- all valid.There may be many more abbreviated affiliations, but if you do not see atleast one of the above degrees, in all likelihood your “doctor” is a fake one.Prescription:Real doctors would always give you a proper, signed prescription. If it is not legible(which is true in just too many cases), you may politely request them to tell you the names of the medicines, and they would. Ideally the prescriptions have to be in block letters and legible. A real doctor would never give you undisclosed medicines/injections.Other pointers :Absolute cure: Modern medicine is never absolute. If someone promises you complete cure, with no side effects, there are high chances that its a quack. Real doctors are very well aware that no treatment is absolute, and no drugs are entirely free of side-effects.Range of specialization: Quacks would claim to treat everything from common cold to cancer, from broken bones to brain hemorrhage, and all with absolute promise of complete cure. Real doctors have a certain field of specialization, and would never make tall claims.The number of quacks practicine medicine out there is huge, and many of them would even use fake names and fake degrees.
