PDF Editor FAQ

What kind of damage would a nuclear bomb the size of a speck of dust do?

It’s not possible to build an actual nuclear weapon that size, but for the purposes of our thought experiment let’s say we can. Before we can determine how powerful a scaled explosion might be, we need to decide how small a “speck” of dust is.This NASA worksheet estimates a typical speck of dust in a nebula as being two micrometers in radius, and the weight as being roughly 10[math]^{-13}[/math] kilos, or a tenth of a picogram. The efficiency of a large nuclear weapon approaches 6 kilotons of TNT yield per kg weight, or 6 x 10[math]^6[/math] kg/kg, which works out to 0.0006 grams of TNT for our tenth of a picogram. In terms of energy, that’s 2.5 joules, enough to keep an LED lightbulb lit for a tenth of a second.Another way of visualising it would be as the effect of roughly one cubic millimetre of black powder igniting. (Naturally, I do not recommend experimenting with any amount of explosives. Just imagine it.)At this size, all the gamma radiation of our pico-atom bomb explosion would be absorbed by the atmosphere. There might be enough fallout to be potentially dangerous if you conducted the test firing in an enclosed room with no ventilation, and carelessly breathed in all the vapours resulting from the explosion — by which I mean statistically dangerous, in that it might raise your chance of getting cancer eventually by a measurable amount.A substantially larger tabletop explosion

For a young CS student, would it be worth investing time in learning Emacs and/or Vim, or should I stick to Sublime Text or Atom?

Short answer: If you want to, go ahead. It's your computer.Long answer: Here's the thing. Anyone still fighting the editor wars is either doing it out of nostalgia or sheer contrariness. There's a surfeit of editors out there, many of them (most notably Atom) completely hackable. The value of learning Emacs or Vi(m) is mainly in finding the familiar in an unfamiliar place, ie someone else's computer, or a brand new one of your own. To be blunt, both designs are very outdated, but they're also good enough to have had 40+ years each of devoted users, and their lists of key commands emulated on many of their successors. That is not a thing to sniff at. I'm not convinced that any perceived benefits of one editor over another are anything more than muscle memory and placebo, but if you're used to something and the tool is still good for the job, why change?Personally, I'm not sure I'd bother unless I was doing a lot of work over SSH, though (for example, on a BeagleBone Black or the SDF Public Access UNIX System). In my case, a large part of it stems from having been a Mac user for 20+ years and my editors of choice being TextWrangler and nano (or BBEdit Lite and Pico back in the 90s); Emacs interests me mainly only for the easter eggs, and I think the last time I had a need to use vi, I was trying to use OpenBSD on an ancient SE/30 that barely had enough room on its hard drive to fit the base OS. (I have played with sandy a little too, and you should look into it if you like your tools on the spartan side; it's essentially what vi would look like if it had been implemented in, say, 2005 instead of 1976.)Now if you want my own personal, highly biased opinion: Emacs is too prickly and primitive for me; I don't have nearly the kind of memory I'd need to memorize the keystroke commands, but I can understand how it helps some people's workflow. I hear people rave about Vim, but the vi interface is a relic that I believe only still exists because of standardization, and I can't quite fathom how or why it would become any newbie's first choice as an editor. I've played a bit with most of the newer open source Sublime clones. Atom is probably the closest to Emacs in spirit, since its creator was an Emacs fan. TextMate offers some features like command execution within a document (a la MPW/BBEdit shell worksheets), but it's Mac-only and technically commercial despite the GPL licensing. VSCode is not awful, although you probably won't find anything to get excited about one way or another, and the same applies to Adobe Brackets. I've even played with Notepad++, which runs shockingly well on OS X under WINE; I can see why Windows coders love it. But I've yet to see anything that gives me a particularly compelling reason to switch away from TextWrangler, not even the fact that TW is and always has been closed-source. That goes back to my original point: what's best is what works for you, and oftentimes that's determined almost entirely by what you're personally used to.
