The ML 350 jeep Uni-body dates back to 1997 when Mercedes & Chrysler had a business relation. Until a couples of years the JEEP/ Durango had the same platform as the ML 350. When Benz bought Chrysler they did not have any platform to build a SUV. The Durango JEEP Cherokee platform was the only one available and Mercedes used it in 1997 to manufacture the ML that was never a German Production. It was manufactured in Vance Alabama the USA Mercedes Plant on that platform and until 2014 the ML or GL was built on a JEEP Durango Chrysler platform and many other components and vice versa the Durango was a Cheap ML SUV Mercedes by design and components .Compairing the heavy duty Jeep Durango Mercedes ML platform against the Toyota Highlander world wide known is a tough deal to compare.Mercedes has the advantage on the Jeep ML Durango platform as it is possibly more heavy duty. Mercedes has also a better design engine and a tough one ; The Mercedes transmission was a ZF German transmission now a Mercedes transmission.The best in the world…The only negative point is the Vance Alabama poor record on the ML assembly troubles over the years that are still present as a US SUV Mercedes.Toyota record does not have such a glory background. However in Africa, Middle east, South America the Toyota Highlander and Prado are the Mercedes of the SUV as the ML Mercedes is not very much exported and present. After a research online and few phone calls I found out that this is a very common problem among Mercedes vehicles. I took it to the dealer they did diagnose it for steering wheel lock and quoted me $1,300 for repairs.
