PDF Editor FAQ

How good of a prospect is UCLA OLB Anthony Barr?

He's an outstanding prospect, and IMHO, the 4th or 5th best overall playr in this draft.I'm in the minority here, but my POV is this is one of the best seven players in the 2014 NFL Draft. (The others: DE Clowney, LT Robinson, OLB Mack, WR Watkins, DT Donald, LT Matthews). I have him #4, ahead of the last three guys I just mentioned. That is way higher than most "experts" have him. I do not care. We'll see who is right in a few years.Barr is getting knocked because he isn't stout vs. the run, and seems to many analysts like more of a "one trick pony" finesse/speed pass rusher.I completely and respectfully disagree. This is a 6-5, 255 pound man with 34 inch arms who turns the corner off the weakside -- as a 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE -- better than anyone in this draft class save Clowney. Now process this: He ran 4.66 at the Combine, but 4.43 and 4.49 at his Pro Day at UCLA. That's rare speed. Now process this: The go-to drill for change of direction is the three-cone drill. 7.35 is a good time for a linebacker. Khalil Mack did an amazing 7.08. Mike Evans, a 231 pound WR, ran a 7.08 -- amazing.WR Sammy Watkins, everyone's #1 WR this year, ran 6.95.Barr? 6.82.That's insane. The best three-cone in history, at any postion, is Jeff Maehl in 2011, a 195 pound WR from Oregon, who ran 6.42.Dri Archer ran a combine best 4.26 in the 40... his three cone was 6.86, slower than Barr, OK? And he's 80 pounds lighter than Barr.No one 255 pounds runs a 6.82 three cone.Barkevious Mingo ran 6.84 in the three-cone last year -- so rare, he landed at #6 in the draft, as a 241 pound 'backer. Barr is even bigger and faster. Now process this: He's played linebacker... for 18 months. He was a running back at UCLA before switching over to defense. So here's what I see:+ Rare size/speed ratio+ Rare balance+ Exceptional change of direction skills+ High ceilingRight now? Clowney and Mack are better players --- no shame there. But in 2016, this might be the best defensive player in this draft. He does the single most important thing an edge rusher can do: He gets the QB on the ground.Watch this video -- tell me his balance turning the corner, and his change oof direction skills (see 1:30 in) at top speed, are not rare:The other thing is: he looks skinny at 255.As a rookie, he's a pass rush specialist and sack artist. But in three years, this guy may be a 270 pound, 4-3 end.He could be Aaron Maybin or Aundray Bruce, I get the bust potential. That's why he'll go somewhere between 5-20 in the draft. But I'd roll the dice -- and bet on my coaches to coach him up.If it all comes together for Barr... he could be scary.I'd betting on him. I'd take him anywhere from 4-10 overall, and will be amazed if he falls outside the top 10 picks (despite what experts say). We'll see in a few days.

How have the NFL players who were picked 199th (where Tom Brady was picked) in the draft fared in the last 10 years?

I’ll go you one better and look at the 199th pick every year since Brady was picked, simply because I’m procrastinating. After Brady in the 2000 draft, we have the following names:2001: Adam Haayer (OT, Minnesota) to the Titans. Played 20 games, starting 5 of them, for the Titans, Vikings, Cardinals and Rams. Last played in 2006. 5 picks later, the Bengals selected TJ Houshmandzadeh, who made the Pro Bowl later on2002: Adrian Peterson (RB, Georgia Southern) to the Bears. Not the Adrian Peterson, by the way. This Peterson played for the Bears until 2009, was with the practice squad of the Seahawks, then spent 2011 with the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League. He scored 8 touchdowns in his career. 242nd pick that year was the Steelers’ selection of Pro Bowl DE Brett Keisel.2003: Willie Ponder (WR, SE Missouri State) to the Giants. Ponder was primarily a returner, and became the first Giant to lead the league in kick return average since 1964 when he did so in 2004. He scored two return touchdowns with the Giants, before spending part of 2006 with the Seahawks and the rest of the year with the Rams. Nobody signed him in 2007, and he has played in the Gridiron Development League since 2008. The pick before Ponder was the Colts future Pro Bowl LB Cato June, and the Patriots drafted Kliff Kingsbury at pick 201. The next Giants pick (211), by the way, was a certain David “Helmet Catch” Tyree, who plays rather a key role in the Tom Brady story.2004: Clarence Moore (WR, Northern Arizona) to the Ravens. Moore played in Baltimore from 2004–2006, before heading north to play for Winnipeg in the CFL.2005: Khari Long (DE, Baylor) to the Chiefs. Long was plagued by injuries, which resulted in brief stints with the Chiefs, Bears, Cowboys, Bills, and the Cowboys again in the NFL, mainly on practice squads. He also turned up in the CFL, playing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Calgary Stampeders, before a season with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL. The pick after Long was Denver’s Chris Myers, who made the Pro Bowl on the offensive line. The Patriots, incidentally, drafted Matt Cassel at 230, and the Rams took Ryan Fitzpatrick at 250 in this draft.2006: Charlie Johnson (DT, Oklahoma State) to the Colts. Johnson played for the Colts from 2006–2010, and then the Vikings from 2011–2014, winning the Super Bowl with the Colts in his rookie season. He got to start 115 games, and played 134 over his career.2007: Drew Mormino (C, Central Michigan) to the Dolphins. Mormino seems to have only played the one year in Miami, as well as spending 2009 on the Chargers’ practice squad. Pick 193 in this draft was Mason Crosby of the Packers, who also collected a future Pro Bowler in Clark Harris at pick 243 (although his Pro Bowl appearance was as a Bengal). The Giants picked up Ahmad Bradshaw at pick 250 here - again a figure in the Tom Brady story, one might say. Pick 225 was another Dolphins selection, this time future Pro Bowl punter Brandon Fields.2008: Robert Henderson (DE, Southern Miss) to the Giants. Henderson suffered an ankle injury in his pre-season debut, spending the year on injured reserve. He then spent time on the practice squads of the Jaguars, Lions, and Seahawks, as well as the UFL’s Nighthawks. 2011 saw him surface with the Edmonton Eskimos in the CFL, before returning to the US for two years with the New Orleans VooDoo in the Arena League. Pick 205 in this draft was Pierre Garcon to the Colts, and the Packers took Matt Flynn at 209.2009: Stryker Sulak (DE, Missouri) to the Raiders. The Raiders waived Sulak before signing him, and the Packers claimed him - moving him to LB in the process. They waived him a few weeks later, and nobody’s heard of him since. Pick 232 in this draft was Julian Edelman to the Patriots. Pick 255, for trivia fans, was the Lions selecting Dan Gronkowski, the brother of the much more famous Gronkowski, who hasn’t exactly set the world on fire. Mr Irrelevant was Ryan Succop, who played for the Chiefs before moving to the Titans.2010: Joe Webb (QB, UAB) to the Vikings. Webb has played for the Vikings, Panthers, Bills, and Texans, and tends to be used more as a wildcat or “role QB”, given the offenses he was more familiar with running. The Steelers took Antonio Brown at 195 here.2011: Jerrell Powe (DT, Ole Miss) to the Chiefs. A couple of interrupted stints with the Chiefs - various waivers and cuts, with re-signings. Powe’s also been a Texan and a Redskin. Pick 191 that year was the Eagles taking Jason Kelce.2012: Jason Slowey (OT, Western Oregon) to the 49ers. Slowey spent time on the practice squads of the Niners and Raiders, before joining the Portland Thunder, the BC Lions and the Portland Steel in other leagues.2013: Theo Riddick (RB, Notre Dame) to the Lions. Riddick is still a Lion, but sits behind Ameer Abdullah on the depth chart.2014: Garrett Scott (OT, Marshall) to the Seahawks. Scott lasted a grand total of one day in the NFL, as he turned out to have a heart condition which caused him to fail his physical.2015: LT Walton (DT, Central Michigan) to the Steelers. Walton is still a Steeler, but a reasonable way down the depth chart at his position.2016: Cody Core (WR, Ole Miss) to the Bengals. Core’s still a Bengal, but hasn’t done an awful lot yet.2017: Chase Roullier (C, Wyoming) to the Redskins. Rouiller has apparently been named the starting Center in Washington.2017: Luke Falk (QB, Washington State) to the Titans. Falk was waived during pre-season, but was claimed by the Dolphins.

Why do loyal 49er fans have doubts about current new head coach Chip Kelly?

Mainly, because of his failure as the Eagles head coach. Considered one of the brightest offensive minds in college football and an ace recruiter, Kelly led Oregon to three BCS bowl games, the 2010 BCS national championship game and three straight Pac 12 titles. A disciple of the hurry-up, no huddle zone read option offense, Kelly built Oregon into a national power. The NFL came calling - specifically the Philadelphia Eagles- and he bolted Oregon after 4 years, posting a 47-6 record. The Eagles gave him full authority over the final 53 man roster, which more or less gave him the power of a GM. He was one of only three coaches in the NFL with such a distinction. The other two being New England Patriots coach Bill Belicheck and Seattle Seahwaks coach Pete Carroll. This decision proved to the detriment of the Eagles and played a huge role in Kelly being fired after only 3 seasons.Known for his high octane offenses and apparently an enormous ego to boot, in order for Kelly's system to thrive he must have the right "type" of QB. After posting identical 10-6 records in his first two seasons (2013, 2014) Kelly was promoted to the head of football operations following the 2014 season and in effect became the team's GM. Almost immediately Kelly made a number of head scratching personnel moves that proved to be his undoing. He traded the franchise's all-time leading rusher and All-Pro RB LeSean McCoy to Buffalo and QB Nick Foles to St. Louis for the oft-injured Sam Bradford. He also traded the team's #1 WR, Jeremy Maclin to Kansas City. His final and arguably most confusing personnel decision was inviting Tim Tebow to pre-season camp to compete for the Eagles QB job. Predictably, Tebow failed to make the final 53-man roster after being cut only a few weeks later.Kelly's decisions left many people - within and outside of the organization - openly questioning his motives, as well as, his moves. The controversial off-season resulted in friction in the locker room and fractured team morale. Not only were Foles, McCoy and Maclin three of the Eagles top play makers, but also team leaders. All of this resulted in a disappointing 6-10 mark and led to Kelly's firing. I say all that to say this......"the reason loyal 49ers fans have doubts about current new head coach Chip Kelly," is due to his failings in Philadelphia. For one, the style of offense Kelly runs hasn't really proven successful in the NFL. At least not consistently. While any number of teams implement some of the strategy and personnel groupings associated with the type offense Kelly runs, its not their primary type of offense. Sure, Kelly went 10-6 his first two seasons in Philly and won the NFC East in 2013 but he failed to make the playoffs either of the last two seasons. The Eagles decline in year 3 under Kelly is directly attributed to his controversial moves last off-season. So, I would say 49ers fans are doubting Kelly for good reason. His offense hasn't proved overly successful. He hasn't taken the NFL "by storm" as many predicted he would when he left Oregon. He had some success. But, he didn't set the woods on fire. And his out sized ego doesn't help matters. He thinks he's smarter than everyone else. And that he knows more than everyone else.Personally, I'm not a 49ers fan. However, I can certainly understand the doubts they have about their new head coach. The goal is to win consistently and compete for and win Super Bowls. Something Kelly hasn't proven he's capable of doing yet. And I don't think he'll fare well in SF either. While he's probably a better option than former HC Jim Tomsula, CK is not the answer to the 49ers ills. He'll be looking for another job in a few more years.Take it to the bank!
